Noob saying 'HI!'...

Got my first GPS this week, ordered the wrong one, now I have another one on order.
I Drive for a living, ordered the Garmin 765T, found out it doesn't have the trucking information I need,
So I have a 465WT on order.
(Garmin guy told me the 'T' was for 'Trucker',
Turned out it's for 'Traffic' FM alerts!
And the one he recommended doesn't have the 'Trucker' information included, and you can't add it through Garmin,
So the 465T is on it's way...
Nothing like doing things TWICE! razz

I will have a TON of questions,
And you will have to treat me like I ride the short bus, since I know NOTHING about these things!

Right now, I'm interested in things like restricted truck routes (those $750 fines aren't what I'd call 'Wanted')
And I'd like to figure out how to program for speed traps, school zones, red light cameras, road construction, ect.

I purchased a 'SD' card (8GB) for the unit so I can store the stuff up front,
So if anyone has any tips, tricks, information on these things I'd sure appreciate it,
But remember, you are talking to a guy the 21st century is trying to avoid!
You will probably have to spell it out for me since I'm a complete newbie...

Welcome to the site. You may want to start by looking at this http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 on how to set up custom pois for your gps.A lot of the files you mention are on site for download.Once you become active member see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/262 or pay a small fee now you will be able to download the Redlight and Speed camera files.Any of the other files you can download any time.No reason you can't start setting them up on your computer now.So you will be ready when the new gps arrives.

well JeepHammer

Welcome aboard.

There are a lot of trucker friendly POI here for your use. Charlie has some good pointers, but I would start here first of all http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/nuvi465T_OwnersManual.pdf. It's the Owner's Manual for your unit that's not in the box.

You will also want to look into some kind of mount for your unit. If you're driving a company rig that you don't keep, one of the portable mounts like the Bean Bag or the newer friction mount will let you position it on the dash and quickly move it when needed (besides, it keeps you out of trouble in CA and MN for windshield mounts.)

If you want your unit to sound an alert using something other than the built-in bongs you will need to look into how to use WAV sound files.

Some programs you will need, assuming you are using a PC rather than a MAC are Extra_POI_Editor by one of the members here. The link is http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor. From this same page, you can get Turbo's TTS Voice Editor allowing you to change the stock phrases used by the Text-To-Speech (TTS) voices.

One final thing, just for safety's sake - since you will be playing with your unit - make a backup of all the data on your unit before doing anything. If you do a search on this site for backup or backups you'll find lots of threads giving instructions. That brings up my final point for now, learn to use the search box. It will save you a lot of frustration.

Why don't you look at the Beginners Exercises under the FAQ section of this site. This first couple might help you with the suggestions already made like getting a manual and doing a backup as soon as your unit comes in. The link is
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6654

You can do Exercises 1 and 3 without having your unit. They will get you used to some of the terms we use here.

Welcome to POI Factory

Resistance was futile. You have been assimilated.

Welcome

You will find a lot of helpful and friendly folks here. They are also very patient when it comes to explaining things. They understand that not everyone is a tech wiz.

You got Ripped 4SURE!

cool

I also Drive!

You did not need to buy a over priced unit to get the info you needed...

I have on my 765T and you could too...

Weigh Stations
Low bridges
Cat Scales
All Truck stops
RRX
Dangerous curves and intersections
all Wal-marts and Sams
School zones
Redlight cameras
Speed cameras
All Rest Areas
International truck repair centers (2010 Prostar)
Or you could put your truck model in.

Your company can and will, or you can use your atlas
to check RESTRICTIONS. ALL roads will be POSTED.

THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF BUYING A MOTOR CARRIER ATLAS.
(Only drive on highlighted roads)

Your unit will cost $400 or more and the 765T cost me
$150 TOTAL. Your unit wont have half the Features the
765t will have.

Hope this HELPS!!!
