Unwanted 0.2 mi proximity alert

Hello,

I am running into a strange issue. I have been creating GPX files using Extra_POI_Editor and then loading them with the GARMIN POI loader.

Lately all my GPX files have a 0.2 mi proximity alert for every POI in the file.

I definitely don't have proximity points in the file, and I load the GPX files in Express mode, so I am not manually updating the proximity alerts.

Has anyone run into this? I can literally create 1 POI in a new GPX file with just a location and a name, then load it using POI Loader and it ends up with a proximity alerts of 0.2 mi.

Thanks,

David

If your file name or

If your file name or subfolder name contains a number
125 or more (200 using metric)you wil get a proximity
of 0,2 miles (400m in metric) with PoiLoader in express .

Unwanted 0.2 Mi Proximity Alert

Hi,

I think I finally figured out the issue. I had a subfolder in my POI folder named "Automobile". In there I had a bunch of GPX files with auto dealers.

When I ran the POI loader, all the GPX files in the folder got a .2 mi proxmity alert added to them.

If I renamed the entire folder to "Auto Dealers", it did not do this.

Any ideas why this would happen. I didn't think "Automobiles" was a reserved word or anything on a Garmin.

If anyone wants to test this, I would appreciate hearing their results. I have a Nuvi 200

Please give a listing...

dyoung1234, Please give a listing of your folder name and then the subfolder names and include the file names.

For example, mine might be
>YPOIS
>>Restaurants
>>>Arbys.csv
>>>Mcdonalds.gpx
>>Stores
>>>Home Depot.csv
>>>Lowes.gpx

where > is my main folder
and >> are the one level of subfolder we are allowed
and >>> are the file names

Automobile

I made a test with a gpx file with cabins poi, and nuvi 200.
I change the name to Automobile ,and yes it did make a proximity of 400m (0,25miles)
It must be the name mobile the nuvi use, that is a proximity name.

From the POI Loader Help file....

POI Loader determines whether or not a file contains speed and proximity alert points based on specific criteria. Use the following information to help you create Custom POI files:

If a file name contains a valid speed number or if all records in a file have speed encoded in the name, then all records in the file will include speed and proximity alerts. For example, a data file with the file name "Speed_30" generates speed alerts of 30 mph (or kph, depending on the type of units selected in POI Loader) for each POI in the file.

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted. You can override this default value by entering the speed in Manual mode.

I need to read more closely

from the POI Loader Help file

In his first sentence, the poster said he had the word "automobile" and I just skipped right over it. Fortunately Motorcycle read the word correctly and got us to the final answer.

Since automobile is a logical name for a folder or a file we need to be alert to this potential outcome. I'm surprised I haven't done it myself.

Another of those disguised GOTCHAS

I did see the name

I did see the name "Automobile" and know well the proximity names as "mobile" and the others, but I
was not aware of that the nuvi used them when thay are only a part of names like automobile.

We need to verify

I have just made the assumption that the character string anywhere is what is looked out.

Has anyone run tests to determine?

.

Yes, that's correct.

That's why the redlight camera alerts work. That's why the speed alerts get generated when there is a number (numeral) in the file name.
