No POI Loader output file

Hi everyone,

I just received a Garmin Nuvi 255w as a gift. I have spent all day trying to load custom poi files on it with no luck. I downloaded the most recent (2.5.4) POI Loader from garmin and have tried using it both on my normal computer (Windows 7 64bit) and on a computer running XP sp3. To begin with the program was outputting a .gpi file, that was just 1kb, but after the third time or so that I ran it it stopped outputting all together. When run on the XP machine I get an error that says the following:

App: POILoader
At: 8/22/2010 12:42:00 AM (UTC)
OS Windows XP Service Pack 3
Processor x86, Processor Level 15, Processors:1, Model: 3 Stepping: 4 RAM: 2086990
APPLICATION.CPP-258-2.5.4.0
invalid string position

I am in the process of downloading an older version of POI Loader to see if it will make a difference. But I thought I would see if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks

.

I'd try uninstalling it, and then a reinstall first. If you DL a previous version, you'll just get an update prompt when you run the program.

Do you have all the latest updates for XP?

Uninstall

I agree with juggernaut.

A very good uninstaller is Revo Uninstaller

Get the free version at http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_downloa...

Update

I have gotten it to work in Windows 7, but it required me removing the couple of gpx files that I had mixed in with my CSVs. Any idea why that is happening? I thought that 2.5.4 was supposed to be gpx compatible...

Also

I had uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times.

so try this.

Try to install to a custom folder (advanced) and just choose some folder on your computer.

Then report.

I tried that as well, first

I tried that as well, first because I was trying to install to an SD card, and then to just try and get it to work. Like I mentioned above, I have gotten it to out put now, but only if I have only CSV (and a couple of associate bmp and wav files) and no gpx in the files in the poi source folder.

.

Try EPE (Extra POI Editor): Open a .csv, and save as a .gpx.

Opposite

POI Loader is only working with CSV now though, not gpx. I have converted all three of my gpx using this website: http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/extra/poiedit.php

At the same time I am wondering what the issue is since version 2.5.4 is supposed to be able to handle gpx

POI Loader supports GPX files ... but if there are errors in the files, it often doesn't do a good job of letting you know what the problem is.

What are the GPX files you're trying to load, and where did they come from?

Test with MapSource

Try opening your gpx files with MapSource. If they won't open, they are defective.

POILoader 254

I have a mix of gpx and csv POI files. POILoader processes them just fine on my Win7/64 system. I vote with the others that you have a bad gpx file.

I wish POILoader showed the version number somewhere on the program page. I don't find any way to know what version I'm running without checking the file I d/l.

One nice thing I've noticed about POILoader is that if a subfolder is empty, POILoader doesn't create an empty POI on the GPS.

POILoader Version

It does. When you start POILoader, move your mouse pointer over the name "POILoader" in the title bar of the window and right-click once. That opens a context menu with "About POI Loader" last in the list. Left-click on that to display the version. I'm still running 2.5.3.0.

There's also a "Check for Software Updates" selection. Guess I should update mine. redface

No output

I had that happen on my old XP machine. If memory serves, the problem was a bad CSV file. The file had some missing and/or invalid coordinates. Once I had entered valid coordinates the file loaded properly.

Good Tip - thanks

I tried for a while last night to find out which version I was running and could not. Now I know.

That's it

That's the problem. I have just spent about 4 hours attempting to figure out why POIloader would run successfully yet never produce an .gpi output file. I was running POIloader on a Windows 7 64bit laptop.

Finally I copied the csv and gpx files over to my wife's Windows 7 32bit machine and ran POIloader there. When I did, POIloader reported 2 corrupt csv files.

I deleted those 2 files, moved everything back to my 64 bit machine and now POIloader works perfectly, creating the poi.gpi file.

The biggest issue is that POIloader didn't report a problem with the csv file on a 64bit machine and created no output because of it.

can you try compatability mode

Is there some mode you can run POI Loader in that makes it think it is 32 bit? If so, let us know what the results are.

.

You should be able to run it in XP mode aka Compatibility mode.

Ah ha. Thanks for that. Actually, I have to click on the POILoader icon just to the left of the name. Moving the mouse pointer over either the name or the icon, the pointer never changes to indicate a clickable link.

When I click on the icon, it brings up the options, one of which is the software update check and another of which is the version info. Nothing happens when I click the name.

GPX

The gpx files that I was using were from here, as were most of my CSV files. I will have to check them all in mapsource to see if I can find the problem.

Thanks

Strange. I works for me right-clicking anywhere along the top title bar. confused

As long as I was there, I updated POI Loader on both of my PCs. wink

POI Loader Bug with invalid.CSV files

Running POI Loader in compatibility mode is unnecessary - Windows knows it's a 32-bit application and runs it as such.

@t923347: Does your wife's system have the same version of POI loader?

There's an interesting bug with POI Loader in processing invalid .csv files, that I just found... rolleyes

If there is an error in a .csv file, it will not be reported if there is at least one other valid .csv file in the folder. Fails with POI Loader 2.5.4 (or 2.5.3) in 32-bit XP or 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista.

They

They are both running version 2.5.4 of POIloader.
