Magellan RM 3000T

Question - I'm mapping Lake Norman, North Carolina, for all of the shoals, channel markers, islands, harbors, marinas, etc., and am wondering if anyone has used the RM 3000 on water? I also want to change the Icons/Images used, but not sure if that's possible.

The Magellan Roadmate POI software is pretty crappy, no GUI, lacking in any form of graphical interface, and almost makes me want to go back to my Garmin eTrex... I do like the RM 3000 but interfacing with it from the computer is not very intuitive.

Magellan's POI File Editor

I haven't figured out how to copy saved locations out of my 3000T, but I did find out how to create and load POIs from my computer.

My 3000T came with a simple POI File Editor. It has a GUI and let's you build custom POI files from scratch or by importing data files. The functionality is a little like PoiEdit except you can only save to Magellan format.

You can set an icon for each category, but it seems you might need to choose from a pre-defined list. I haven't seen where you can use your own images like with Garmin models (but I haven't really looked for it).

Were you able to find a way to retrieve saved locations from the GPS?

saved locations

No I wasn't and that's part of my problem with the 3000. I think I may take this back and move over to that 2720 unit. I'm going to do a trip on the lake here in a bit and see if I can get any of these ideas working as I'd rather not have to go through the hassle of returning this unit if there's any possible way for it to work. Are you sure about the "trail of breadcrumbs" on the 2720? That to me is like one of the most important features.

As to the categories in the 3000, I found that it limits you to 10 categories, so I had to reduce all those pretty icons I was using down to 10 only. I had 16 on my Garmin that were in use, and not sure what the limit was on it.

track log

2720 has a track log, but it just starts dumping the oldest track points when the memory gets full. I don't think it lets you keep saved tracks like you can on some handheld models.

Here's a link to the 2720 manual

Track log info is on p 25; saved routes on p 20.

Goodbye Magellan

Well, I'm convinced that I've got to go back to the drawing board. I have a wish list that I'm not sure will be filled easily in any cost efficient manner. May end up separating my car from boat, which is ridiculous, there should be units that would travel easily from one to the other. You'd think so as the eTrex works very well in both cases.

So, the RM 3000T has been put back in the box and is going back. I'm going to have to shop more carefully as I'm seeing that getting what I want is going to be difficult, and likely more expensive.

Here's my wish list, so any of you that see how I can fulfill these please chime in:

1. Must have a battery!
2. Must have external power source! as in cigarette lighter adapter and ac adapter
3. Must be able to mark POI's/waypoints (duh)
4. Must have a method to mark and save tracks
5. Must distinguish the difference between operating on land and operating on water (the 3000 doesn't even distinguish in colors between land and water!)
6. Must be portable enough to carry between auto and boat
7. Must be able to transport POI's to/from the unit and create custom POI's

I think that's the top items...
