Garmin Nuvi 1490T - Current software versions? How to Transfer Favorites?

Just picked up a refurb Garmin Nuvi 1490T from amazon (one ninety shipped), and wondered how far behind it's software versions are? I'm trying to determine whether I should wait till the end of my 60 day term to (hopefully) get the most current map update. Should I be concerned that the 1490T will malfunction after updating, and should therefore do it now, in case of an exchange being needed?

Current 1490T settings:
CN North America NT 2010.10
Basemap 4.00
GPS: 4.30
Text: 4.00
Audio: 2.50
Bluetooth: 1.73

Now after googling for an hour "how to transfer Garmin favorites" from my StreetPilot C550 to my 1490T, I have to ask why my copy of the .gpx file in the C550 had an .lpt extension, and was not successful in copying to the 1490T after renaming the file (trying both extensions)? It shows when connected to my Mac, but not in the Favorites list.... I would appreciate any knowledgeable insight or opinions.

Transferring Favorites

I transferred my Favorites from a C330 to a Nuvi 855 with MapSource: "Transfer... Recieve from Device... Waypoints" will copy to MapSource and "Transfer... Send to Device... Waypoits" tranferred to my 855. You should edit the list in MapSource to avoid duplicating the "Garmin" waypoints.

The current maps are 2011.10. You can probably wait for 2011.20 but make sure you keep an eye on the 60 days, which started the day you first got a satellite lock while moving, as you don't want to miss the free one. Expect 2011.20 in August probably. It really doesn't matter if you have to return the unit (not likely) because the replacement will have the same update options.

The most important software version is firmware and it's the one you don't list. Use Webupdater with your PC attached 1490T and it will tell you if a firmware update is available. The current version is Software Version 4.20. You can check your current release in Tools - Settings - System - About

Current software and maps

I appreciate you confirming what I was thinking t923347.... I think I'll watch the calendar and hope the 2011.20 update is released before my August 28th deadline.

As to the firmware, I believe it is the same as the basemap... going thru Tools - Settings - System - About = gets me to a screen with the unit ID (top L) and nuvi 1490 i KP1 V3 LC 2GB (top R), with a Software Version 4.00 (2nd line, top R).

So... what do we know of the differences between Software Versions 4.00 and 4.20? What are the pros and cons of NOT updating (or registering) my 1490T just yet?

I too just got my refurb 1490T

last Friday. I didn't wait around for the next map update. I've been running my 260 with a nearly 2 year old map, so the current maps are already an update for me. Plus I didn't want to miss the update by forgetting and waiting too long.

Upgrading to the latest firmware and maps went without a hitch.

I'm

I've been using 4.20 since it came out and I can't find any problems with it.

Transfer Favorites from StreetPilot to Nuvi

Thank you much Mark, but I just solved the problem:

I read online that the older StreetPilot C series WON'T show ANY .gpx file UNTIL you use the unit to "Browse Map", then ADD a favorite/waypoint. As soon as I did, a "current.gpx" file appeared in the GPX folder. I simply had to copy that file, save it to my desktop, rename it to anything other than "current.gpx" , then switch to the 1490T, and paste it!

I would be interested in trying MapSource, but I don't know of any other way to get the product without buying a full map (on DVD only, not available with download), or receiving it when I do my 60 day free map update. Only an update to MapSource is available for free from Garmin's site. Since my 1st satellite lock was yesterday, I'm gonna wait until the 2011.20 update comes out... hopefully next month.

Here's how to get MapSource (with a basic basemap) without having the DVD/CD or the update file.

Even though you won't have the detail maps, you can use MapSource to backup and restore the Favorites.

LOVE your Mama!

Thanks for the tutorial link, much appreciated. I think I'll have to peruse your posts next time I visit POI Factory!

Is there a way to transfer the maps from one computer to another? I have my old maps from my 260 and the current maps for my 1490T. I'd like to have the most current map on one and the old map on a second one.

No. You cannot transfer the maps from one computer to a different computer.

You can install the maps to a different computer by installing them from the original DVD (if your unit came with one) or by running the map update file on the second computer.

Just copy the EXE file that you downloaded to a flash drive or a DVD and run the file on the second computer.

If you haven't updated the maps and only have them on the GPS unit, then you can't transfer them.

You might try Garmin's BaseCamp software. It is RIDICULOUSLY slow, but it has the ability to read the preloaded maps from some GPS units.

oh, boy!!

Just went through this torture yesterday, transferring favorites from my dad's 650 to his new 1490LMT. I followed all of the instructions I could find on various websites, all of which said, "Easy as pie...just copy your \Garmin\GPX\Current.gpx from the 650 to the 1490."

Every time I tried to do this, I'd finish the copy, reboot the 1490, and presto! The Current.gpx file that came with the machine was the one present, and the one I'd copied to it had vanished!

Here's what happened: the Current.gpx file is actually an .xml file. Imbedded in its header is a string that tells what machine created the file. If you copy the Current.gpx file and open it in Notepad, hit ctrl F and search for creat, you'll find a string that says:
creator="nüvi 650" (or whatever model Garmin created the file).

The solution is to copy the Current.gpx file to the new machine, and then edit the file on the new machine to reflect its name, i.e. on my dad's transfer from a nüvi 650, the creator="nüvi 650" becomes creator="nüvi 1490".

Only after you edit the file on the target (new) machine do you remove it from your PC, and reboot the target (new) Garmin. Presto! Your favorites will now have been transferred.

An easier way.

Also you can't copy the current.gpx file from one Nuvi to another. Since the Current.gpx file is an output file that gets created each time you turn the Nuvi on, putting that file on another unit will just cause it to be deleted once you boot the new machine.

As has been noted here many times, to copy your favorites from one Nuvi to another you need to take the current.gpx file from the original unit, copy it to your PC, rename it to any name other than current.gpx (try temp.gpx) and then copy the renamed file to the GPX folder on the new Nuvi.

When you reboot the new Nuvi it will take the data in the Temp.gpx file and use it to create a new Current.gpx file which contains your old favorites.
