Video Instructions

Here is a video I found on replacing the Nuvi 660's battery. The kit from newpower99.com made my little "surgery" smooth and simple. Hope this helps. -Craig

One big "OOPS" I noticed in

One big "OOPS" I noticed in the video is the copper colored ribbon cable going to the touch screen came undone. You can clearly see this on the back "white" side of the main circuit board after he plugs the speaker and battery in. He blows off re-connecting it and just slaps the two case halves together. Pretty big omission... Now, if he said something about it, I missed it because there's no sound on this particular computer.

Nice one!

Thanks. I'll bookmark this.

He says nothing. It did look as if the ribbon had come undone.

That's what I thought.

I noticed it specifically because I read somewhere else where someone replacing their battery had that same ribbon connector come loose. He said it pulled out very easily and was rather difficult to put it back and keep it in when closing the case. Took him several tries to get it right. This guy appears to have just glossed over it and went straight to powering it on and magically having it work. confused

Thanks for the Info -

I just ordered one. It will be shipped tomorrow (ordered too late for today's shipment).

Thanks a lot for the info, I appreciate it.

So Far, So Good

So far, my 2 year old 660's battery is holding a charge just fine (sound of Gary knocking on wood with fingers and toes crossed). But when it does die and it will, I'll know what to do.

Thanks for the useful links.

Done -

Well, my battery came in and I installed it last night. The tools they sent me were good to have although the plastic pry tool to open the case was not much of a help. It lost it's point shortly after I started using it. Screwdrivers were needed and much appreciated - I didn't have one that small.

Long story short - watched the video a couple of times then went to work. Doesn't take long and worked like a charm. Battery charged up and ready to go.

Thanks for the information Dwshouston.

Did you have any trouble

Did you have any trouble with the ribbon cable running from the display to the main circuit board coming lose?

Pain in the bottom

When I replaced the battery in my 680 the ribbon cables gave me all kinds of trouble, but with the assistance of my small fingered 10 year old we managed to lock everything back in place. You must lock the plastic tabs that hold the ribbons while being careful not to yank everything back out while reassembling the unit. It turned out to be much more work than I had expected but now that it is reassembled the unit is working great even with the abuse it takes being packed around with me when I go geocaching.

Just ordered kit-will report

I just ordered the kit. Thanks for the warning about the ribbon cable. I wish they would update the video regarding this.
I will report results when done.
Currently, the battery lasts less than 3 minutes. It's a pain requiring restart after pumping gas, etc.

Nice

Saving for the near future. Thanks.

Nuvi 660 Battery Replacement

Received the kit yesterday and replaced the battery with very little trouble. I misplaced the plastic tool for wedging the back off, but found that the back of a small pocketknife worked great. The point inserted into the space, and the wedging action of the wider back separated the case easily. I wouldn't recommend a screwdriver as it will tend to damage the case edges. The mini Torx and Phillips tools included with the battery are vital.

I managed to replace the battery without detaching the ribbon cables. There is room enough if you are careful.
The original battery had a sticky back designed to prevent movement or rattling. I didn't bother with this since the new battery is held pretty firmly in its compartment.

Total time: about 45 minutes. Total cost $30.68. Performance: great but I haven't checked the capacity beyond 2 hr. yet. No rattles or other differences.

Great Advice

Thanks for the advice. I have a 680 and it should be the same.

Thank you!! I had just tried

Thank you!! I had just tried using my 660 away from the car and noticed that it quickly shut down in less than 30 sec. It works fine when plugged into the car. I didn't know I can get a new battery for this unit and install it myself. I always thought it had to be shipped back to Garmin. Similar to what I had to do with my old iPod that had to be taken to the Apple store for replacement.

Just About Any

Even an iPod battery can be replaced by the end user with a little work (I have a 40GB iPod that I replaced the battery on). Some of the Garmin's are a little more difficult than others. Some can simply be plugged in. Others like the C330 and C550 require soldering.

Considering what Garmin charges to replace a battery, it is worth learning how to do it yourself. I assume they charge a lot for a battery replacement because they would prefer you to throw away the device and get a new one. Charging you around $180 for a new battery is about equal to the cost of a replacement unit.
