Florida Gov. Crist Signs Red Light Camera Bill..!!

The following was a news article from a Florida newspaper. I trimmed down all the fluff and non-essential information contained.. while still leaving most of what was written intact.

--------------------------------------------------

Gov. Charlie Crist ceremonially signed a bill Tuesday designed to prevent others from dying in accidents caused by red-light runners.

Melissa Wandall fought for the passage of a bill, named after her husband, designed to deter red light runners through the use of surveillance cameras. On Tuesday, Wandall watched Crist sign a copy of the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act.

Crist thanked her for her tremendous courage in working so hard to get the bill adopted. For Wandall, her feelings ran strongly toward gratitude for those who helped ensure that Mark Wandall’s name is remembered not just as a victim, but for "safety".

Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube said he supported the bill. It’s "never" been about Big Brother or the "money". It’s been about "public safety", Steube said.

Wandall also had words of praise for Crist, who shrugged off a call to veto the bill by the AAA Club South, which criticized it as being more about the "money" the cameras would generate than "public safety".

the article failed to mention how much revenue the state will received from ticketing red light runners.
Also, will the deployment of RLC really can prevent all deaths from red light runners?

So be it!~!!

If they make a tremendous amount of money from red light runners that would be fine as far as I am concerned. If the cameras saved one life it would be worth it. There will be those that continue to try and save a few seconds that will continue to be a problem.

Yes

Florida needs this.I spend a lot of time in FL.Redlight runners are a major problem in central FL.If the light turns green on your side you had better count at least three more cars to come through on the red side before attempting to pull out.Yes the state will make money but the bottom line is a small percent of drivers are the problem. You can't pick up the paper without reading about someone injured or killed as a result of running the redlight plus you see it first hand when driving. It is a shame like most things the majority suffers do to a few others who want to speed on through the light and hope for the best.

To me the major cause of the problem is that the police has never done any real enforcement in the past on this problem. Now is has become acceptable by some to take the chance.

Tourist tax

I lived in Florida for 18 years. Yep, there are a lot of red light runners there.
No doubt the locals will quickly pick up on where the cameras are and avoid running them, just like they do everywhere else.

I suspect that if this new law does not allow the tickets to be sent to the car rental companies, it will soon be amended to allow that.

The companies won't mind, because they'll just bill the customers for the ticket and no doubt add a "unlawful use" surcharge as well.

Give the Money to Victims?

I think the Governor should have all the red light cameras he wants. He should also donate every penny of profit from them to a fund to compensate victims of red light runners.

By insuring that the state does not get any money from the cameras he will domonstrate how sincere he is about putting up cameras to help keep people safe.

Actually he didn't lose the primary, although it is clear that he would have lost if he had stayed in the race. He dropped out of the Republican party and the primary race and announced his intent to run as an independent.

It won't happen as the primary purpose of cameras is to make money for the government and camera companies. As for keeping people safe, there is much debate about whether they even do that. From what I have seen, they make things less safe. It would be safer to ban them.

RLC Bill in Florida

It's all just a money grab by the states.

Red Light Camera

I would like to see a study done on how effective the cameras are.

Red Light Camera Study
I would like to see a study done on how effective the cameras are.
I don't think a study will/would resolve the debate.

Recently, the University of South Florida (USF) located in Tampa (an area where we had red light cameras before Gov. Crist signed the bill), released 2 studies. One done by their College of Public Health came to the opposite conclusion of one done by their Center for Urban Transportation Research.

It was almost too funny. :???:

Eyes wide shut

What an eye opening article...

Thx!

Red light cams

Red light cams can be good but can also be bad. They are good to collect money! They can be bad if they reduce the time the yellow light is on. In some parts they reduced the time from 4 seconds to the minimum 3 seconds and that way they get you! Electronic control does not allow for any discretion. Rear end collisions increase because drivers brake hard to avoid entering the intersection on the yellow! In some intersections they have two cams one for red light and other for speed!

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations

"Not about money" -- BS..

"Not about money" -- BS.. At least I'd have some respect for them if they at least say "Hey, here's a way to generate some quick cash". That's all it is (was?) here in AZ.

Studies

A shopping cart with a wobbly wheel has a mind of its own. A study funded by insurance company does not.

Red Light Cameras - Hypocrisy at Work.

The city where I live, Hallandale Beach, in South Florida got from its busiest intersection, in just 6 months a revenue of about One Million Dollars !
More than 90% were just cars not stopping completely before turning on a red light, a relatively minor violation rakes up $158 mostly from beleaguered residents of this small city! (40,000)
Slamming on brakes to avoid the fine is proved to have caused many rear-end accidents.

This is just a tax in disguise. Everybody knows that.

Read my blog:

http://condo-southflorida.blogspot.com/

where I have posted a lot of information about these disgraceful cameras.

Well perhaps not Everybody

Some of us are just as convinced that traffic cameras save lives.

Thank God for the POI-factory

At least the POI Factory can give us warning of the upcoming red light camera in our GPS unit.

Whenever the government says

Whenever the government says it is not about the money, it really is about the money.

agree

agree, or the money should 100% go to contractor.

Do you make this statement...

Probably based upon how most of government works...

Lots of people are drinking the koolaid that these cameras actually save lives... funny and sad how people can be misled so easily.

A camera does nothing. A live cop will put the sting into red light runners. A camera sends a tax bill a few weeks later, long after the red light runner has forgotten about the event.

I bet they take the cameras

I bet they take the cameras out if they don't bring in revenue...

Remember when...

You had to stop at a red light and wait for it to turn green before you could proceed?

You had to find a pay telephone so that you could reply to your pager?

8 tracks in cars (OK, I'm going a bit far with THAT one wink)

Striving to make the NYC Metro area project the best.

Redlight cameras cannot

Redlight cameras cannot physically prevent a vehicle from running a redlight.

Redlight runners are either trying to beat the light or not paying attention to their driving.

For people who frequent those intersections with redlight cameras, it will make them aware to stop on the yellow if they can. (Won't matter if they're not paying attention)

For drivers who don't frequent those intersections, they don't know if there is a redlight camera or not (unless they have POI's in their gps).

Again, usually redlight runners are distracted or deliberately trying to make the "yellow".

Redlight cameras do nothing, zilch, nada to prevent a vehicle from running a redlight.

Education does have an impact

pkdmslf wrote:

Redlight cameras often have signs some distance before you reach them advertising the fact that they exist. Periodic articles in the newspapers or letters to the editor (regardless of whether they are for are against) raise the awareness of citizens. This education seems to have an effect. Perhaps the person who might otherwise deliberately try to make the yellow will think twice and decide not this time.

Distracted drivers cannot be educated until we start passing laws making it a violation to test while driving.
