I can't see phone and traffic icons on my Nuvi

I have a Nuvi 1490 (1490t I think). I have paired it with my cell phone, but cannot see how to open the phone on the SatNav and look at the address book. I cannot find the icon.
Nor can I see the icon for FM TMC Traffic.
Do thesw icons only show when the device is in the car? (I'm using it in the house at the moment--it's a bit boring sitting in the car trying to find out how it works!)

Yes, at least for traffic

Someone else will have to help you with Bluetooth issues, but yes, for FM Traffic to be seen, the nuvi needs to be powered by the Garmin "cigarette lighter" power adapter because that power adapter is also the traffic receiver.

And if you haven't downloaded the 72-page manual yet, here's some reading you can do by the computer (and not when you're bored sitting in the car wink ):

Thanks Craig. Yes, I've downloaded and printed off the manual, it's quite a weighty tome. That's how I found out about the FM Traffic. Before I read the manual I wasn't aware that it was available. It's a useful manual, but seems sometimes to presume knowledge of how satnavs work, and I've never had one before.
