New Jill voice update

DorkusNimrod mentioned this news buried in an unrelated message thread, so I'll thank him here and let you know that for those of you Garmin folks with a TTS American Jill voice, there's a new update (found with WebUpdater on the page after the firmware update) to version 2.60. I didn't think to write down the update log but think it was just for better pronunciation during routing.

What's odd to me is that in looking on Garmin's web site for news of the Jill 2.60, the "latest" update offered is version 1.90 dated 1/2/08! So it appears that WebUpdater and mydashboard are the only ways to obtain the new Jill.

I plan to try out the new voice later today. I've avoided Jill in the past due to her pronunciation of the word "left." Oddly, when in the middle of a sentence, "left" sounds perfect, but when the last word of the sentence, like "Arriving at Home...on left," the word "left" is total gibberish. I find that to be the case for the past couple of Jill versions and the issue occurs on both of my nuvis.

PS

PS--forgot the link to the Garmin site:

I will most likely do this

I will most likely do this update, but I use Emily because she doesn't sound nearly as annoying as Jill. My best friend's GPS will benefit however since he still uses Jill.

EDIT: I can't read or I would have noticed this was a TTS update. It won't work on my Garmin units.

I'm not sure, but...

She still can't pronounce "left" at the end of a phrase (it sounds like a muffled "rapt" or something like that), so I'll go back to Karen or Emily.

That's nothing...

You should hear her try and pronounce some of the street names here in Montreal.... smile

.

Odd. I got the new 'Jill' last night and took her for a test drive today, and she pronounced 'left' correctly, as in "arriving at xxx on the left".

It takes just a few weeks and I will get tired of one of the girls and change to another.

I had the same situation

I also had my Jill voice customized with turbocc'c voice editor & voice doctor and haven't look for an update for a while, but after reading this topic, I decided to give the new version a try. Customization doesn't take longer than 5 minutes anyway, so it shouldn't be an excuse wink

Use turbocc's voice editor

Use turbocc's voice editor and change line 98.Recalculating into whatever you want. Search this forum for topic about it.

Gibberish

That's funny. I find all the English Female voices hard to understand. I use the Male voices. Then again i've bin told by my wife of 40 years i have "selective hearing". Might have something to do with it?

thanks!

Female voices not being understood

might be frequency. As we age and loose hearing a higher pitched female voice may not be as understandable as a lower pitched male voice.

Sexism on both sides

or is it biology? men seem to like using a female voice, whereas women seem to prefer using a male voice.

I think I'll stick with Karen.

Just installed it with the new 1690 update. I currently use Jack, but maybe I will switch back to Jill - Though I just hate having another woman telling what to do wink
