False camera activity

I was driving on the AZ Freeway 101, and going 64 mph in a 65 mph zone (I had just gotten on the freeway and was getting up to speed).

I was alone in the segment of the freeway, and the damn photo radar camera flashed me.

I'm pretty sure it was just doing calibration, but here's the thing I hate about these damn things - how do you know if it didn't make an error? And what happens if it does make a mistake, how do you fight it even if you're innocent?

The flash was also very distracting, and if a driver was flustered it could have caused a driver to react badly.

So glad these things are going away.

Same thing

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago (still no ticket in the mail). I assume it was calibrating, but it made me pause and look down at my speed to make sure I was under the limit (which I was). It still rattles you a little though.

Camera's going away?

Nuvic320,

I wasn't aware that the red light cameras are going away. Do you know if this is just in AZ or everywhere?

No, all cameras are not going away

No, this is in Arizona only, and has nothing to do with red light cameras. They're referring to Arizona's use of speed enforcement cameras on interstate highways. Arizona is removing those cameras this summer in the wake of strong public disapproval:

What I do if I think I might

What I do if I think I might get a ticket in the mail is, write down every detail. The date, time, circumstances, etc. I feel that way, I'm not relying on my memory, and I can compare the violation to what actually happened. I haven't had any tickets yet, but a few close calls.
