Garmin Nuvi 3790T Internal Memory

Hi there,

Does anyone here know if the nuvi 3790T would have enough internal memory in it?

I believe the 1690 has a 2GB limitation and updating maps, software and other stuffs would be a lot difficult doing it on this GPS due to limited memory.

My concern is that Garmin is releasing this item in a couple of weeks and I would like to know for the better information of everyone here if its worth the price?

Garmin should focus on making GPS that have internal memories big enough to accomodate software updates and changes without having to delete help, vehicle and voice files on the internal hard drive.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

No one knows yet...

Since the unit has not yet been released, I doubt any users would know yet. I believe the unit has been "launched" in Paris (see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69151843@N00/4583391277) but you're gonna have to wait for user experiences/hands-on for reports on the on-board memory since Garmin has never released on-board memory specs for any of the nuvis.

You would think it would be at least 4GB but then again, this is Garmin we're talking about...releasing the top-of-the-line 1690 with only 2GB is just plain silly.

Where exactly did you get a release date of "couple of weeks"?

GPS review is saying 3rd Quarter (Jul-Sept) and the Garmin site does not say under the listings of the three new 3700 Nuvis. Could you share the link to the site you got this release date from please?

The information I got was

The information I got was just from a GPS reseller who's sales associate told me that it would be out within a couple of weeks. I called the company because I was trying to get the information about the internal memory which not to my surprise, I did not get any answers.

Who knows if this information is accurate, I just took his word that he does not know the size of the internal memory.

Thanks.

Nuvi 3790T memory

Ok, went to the FCC link to see their images of the device(search Nuvi 3790T fcc to get to a Blog, follow FCC link at bottom). I looked at internal photos, one is a picture of the Sandisk iNand memory module. Sussed it out to be SDIN4C2-8G. Finding anything specific on this module is next to impossible, no datasheets. I however believe it will be either 4 or 8 GB. However, I'm leading to the 8GB because the 8G is usually the size identifier for this brand of chip. (Thank-you digikey) This however does not mean all the 3700 series will have the same size modules in them.

Hope this makes you all warm and fuzzy.

Thanks a lot for the latest

Thanks a lot for the latest reply. I am just curious if it will be worth the big $$ to invest in a new GPS device that does not even have enough internal memory to do your map updates or software updates straight to your device.

Previous suggestions on this thread indicated that one should delete or remove voice files in the internal memory to be able to do a software update. So this lack of memory should be a concern for Garmin to address.

Thank you for your time.

Garmin Nuvi 3790T internal memory

Guess we'll just have to wait until release day to see.

The website shows Topo maps avaliable for the 3790 and I imagine they would take up a lot of space if installed.

The unit does have a microSD card slot for adding updated maps. Thats usually what I use for my map updates. I just load my card, deselect the internal map in the map settings, that way I can put multiple map areas on one card. As I travel alot, I need areas from all over the world, (US, Mexico, Europe) A SD card is the easiest way to go.

You can get Kingston 8Gb Class 4 micro SD cards for about $40-$60 today.

Personally I hate using internal memory if the unit supports SD.

I just got my 3790 on Friday

I just got my 3790 on Friday and I can confirm it does indeed have 8 GB storage. There is almost 4 GB free when you get the unit.

2 GB Limit - 1690

The latest 2012.2 mapset broke the 2gb limit and I had to select the reduced map set. I even have the internal memory stripped out to the bone.

It seems that the EU version of the 1690 does have 4 GB of internal memory.

Perhaps I will be looking into the 3790 or an alternate brand unit - departing from Garmin, especially when you buy the thing and the deluxe map set is supported and now you cannot load it all into internal memory and have to play games with installing onto the computer and storing the regions onto the SD card.

Just bought the 3760lmt and will report the internal memory size when I get it - I was told by Garmin that it was 8GB.
