New 1490T User Questions

Just bought a 1490T - this is my first Garmin GPS.

Have a couple of questions:

1. I live in a rural area - as I follow a route, the surrounding countryside background is white (except for a golf course, etc.) - is this normal? From looking at the screenshots in the manual, I would have expected a light pastel green.

2. I uploaded the rest area POIS and can see them listed under extras. Is there anyway to check them out (Icon & alert) other than driving near a rest area? I zoomed the map to where I thought one should be but no ICON showed.

Thanks,
Mike

I had a Nuvi 1490t before.

You are not alone. This is the way a Garmin GPS supposes to do. A magellan GPS shows the POIs on the map but not a Garmin.

You can run the simulation

You can run the simulation mode instead of driving to the spot.See http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/3130_OwnersManual.pdf page 38.

1. White is correct for non-golf courses and non-parks for the most part.

2. Did you install icons or sounds along with your POI files?

If you want "alert" sounds to occur as you pass by one of your POI locations that doesn't have built-in alerts, you'll need to use POI Loader in Manual Mode. So to get an alert with Rest Areas, use manual mode and set an alert distance--I use 15000 feet for the Rest Areas Combined. On the page where you downloaded the POI file, note that at the bottom, there are several choices for icons and alert sounds:

For alerts on the 1490 you will need to set up with wav files. Will not work with mp3's see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 on how to set up.To check your icons click where to,extras, custom pois and select any one of the pois you have icon for.Don't touch go.Click on map at bottom of screen and the icon will show.
