Old Map :(

The item description says the download is for a 2010 map (without saying which version). Aren't the latest maps 2011.? now?

Cheers wink

Since it's a code for a download from Garmin, I believe you will get the latest map. Except for the nuvi 8x0 and 8x5 folks who need to wait another week or two for 2011.10 and will get 2010.40 right now due to a Garmin software issue, all others should be getting 2011.10 regardless of the out-of-date statement on the Amazon site. I make no guarantee, though, of what you will download.

Garmin Map Updates $30.00 Amazon

Thank you for the post. I suspect that this is a major price drop in response to the competition from cell phone navigation. I think when other companies starting offering free maps, it was a game changer. Granted, stand alone GPS is often better, but being better doesn't always mean it gets selected. I think people like the convenience of navigation on their cell phone. At an extra $10 per month, people might think twice about it. At no additional cost per month, people will think first before buying a stand alone GPS! With the Tom Tom announcement earlier this week about "apps" coming to their devices, I think both Garmin and Tom Tom are scrambling to try and generate a demand for their devices.

A good deal!

...and only 53 minutes remaining in downloading it to my 680!

A Good Deal

Is it Newest Maps?

--
Nuvi-3760 *** Magellan-5045

Good deal

Yes, it is the latest map, you DL it direct from Garmin

Good deal

This is a very good deal.

It downloaded the 2011 maps

The whole process took about 2 hours from the time of purchase but it worked fine on my trusty Nuvi 360. It takes the better part of an hour to download and then about the same to install on the GPS. Just follow the prompts, eat some dinner then have a nice glass of wine and your GPS is updated.

BTW my download speed is about 21 MBS, if yours is faster or slower adjust download times accordingly.

Cheers,

Roger

Not a good deal for Canadians. They don't take Canadian credit cards. I tried. I never had that problem with amazon.com before.

Garmin Slowness

Seriously, a 21 Mb connection and takes hours to download? Garmin really should fix this. My own speed is around 15 Mb and last time I updated, I was pretty turned off. This reminds me of the old dial up days. Pathetic.

Same issue here

This is a US only deal! No foreign purchase

21 MBS....

"Seriously, a 21 Mb connection and takes hours to download? Garmin really should fix this."

I was kind of surprised it took so long and was wondering why but I so rarely update and rarely do sizable downloads so I didn't really care.

Maps

Maps at under $30.00 , is the only way to fly, upgrade when you want to. We really all know every two years is the perfect interval for a upgrading anyway, two upgrades takes a unit to a four year old GPSr and time to think about replacement anyway. So two upgrades at $30.00 x 2 = $60.00 is still less than lifetime nuMaps.

So yes this is a great deal, We can only hope Garmin feels the pressure of competition and get's prices in line and the quality and workmanship improves.

Increased Changes

BobDee wrote:

Up until NA 2010.40 I would have agreed. However, with 2010.40 and 2011.10 there have been several street additions and changes that I am aware of and had been waiting to see. I assume then there were plenty more implemented in just those two releases. It may be that Garmin is stepping up implementing the NAVTEQ changes more frequently. At this moment, for one stretch of highway at least, my 2011.10 is more accurate than Google Maps.

The product key and instructions you receive from your purchase of a OneTime or lifetime numaps update should direct you to the proper update site. I think the procedure below is what you'll follow. Note that if you've not done this yet, logging into mygarmin will require the installation of Garmin Communicator--and if you haven't registered your GPS device, you'll need to do that before applying a map update code to a GPS.

Log in to mygarmin:

https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces

then from your mygarmin home page, click "Manage maps:"

then click "Activate gift card" for the registered GPS device you wish to apply the Product Key you received from Amazon or from whomever you bought the OneTime or lifetime map update. You'll then be able to download and install the map update to your computer and GPS. Have your GPS connected to the computer via USB during this process.

One shot deal.

I think this is only a one shot deal. This is part of the e-mail I got from amazon.com.

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who bought a GPS at Amazon.com, you might be interested to know that we've dropped the price on the Garmin nüMaps Onetime Map Update for US & Canada to only $29.99. Keep your GPS current and working at its best by getting the latest updates so you can navigate with confidence.

But hurry, offer expires on May 15, 2010. While supplies last.

I too, would love to see a similar price reduction/savings for the lifetime map updates.

Map Updates

This may be a stupid question, but....
If I update the maps on my GPS, are the updated maps transferable to my Mapscource CN program on my computer? Or will I end up with two incompatable versions of maps?

Computer is updated, too

Using the OneTime or lifetime numaps update, your GPS will be updated to the new map (the new map replaces the old map) and your computer and Mapsource also receive the map (the new map is in addition to the old map so you can switch back and forth to see changes--or lack thereof--in various areas).

Yowser, check out Amazon's Customer Reviews for this Online Code product:

As I type this, I see 30 reviews, most dated today (May 2) and all complaining of the Garmin web site errors. At least our POI Factory users with issues with this update have a lot of company sad

[Edit: See my next message for a potential solution! Woo-Hoo if it works for you folks.]

One comment on Amazon's Customer Reviews said the "Activate Gift Card" page is not the web page to use. For those of you trying to use your new OneTime Product Key from Amazon, try going to the Unlock Maps page instead:

Sign into "mygarmin," click "myproducts" and select the GPS you wish to apply the update to, then click "Activate/unlock or update your mapping products," then click "Unlock On The Road/Trail maps" and enter your Product Key there.

And please, if it works for you, let us know here at POI Factory!
