how accurate ?

How accurate that traffic information is? Is it pretty much REALTIME ??? And does the unit re-route you accurately avoiding that traffic?
Thanks in advance.

The answer to both your questions is depends. It depends on your definition of "real time," "accurate," and "avoid" are. Of course it also depends on the area as well. In our area, traffic can be classified as congested, more congested, and extremely congested. Rerouting usually means dumping you off the freeway to a congested surface street. My traffic receiver is about as good as the radio except the radio station doesn't always report conditions on the road I'm currently on. The traffic receiver does, but the info is usually about 15 minutes or so delayed from "right this instant."

Great Blue Tooth

I have a 1490T which I recommend very highly. The blue tooth works great with my Dare phone. Good size speaker, clear voice and great volume. I think the blue tooth has limited usefulness on older units because of a smaller speaker and volume limitations. This is of course my personal opinion and have seen other posts stating the same thing.

what a piece of junk! I'd stay way from this unit.

Since I bought my 200, I've been waiting for the "best" GPS to replace it and for the price to come down. By the time the price comes down, every one of the new ones has had bad reports. Now I'm waiting for the 3790t to come on the market, price to come down, and nothing but good reports. It's a frustrating game.

New 1390T

Just got a new 1390T for $200 today. Updated the map to 2011.10 and software. Paired my cell phone and it worked.

Now I have to get it on the road to check it out. I live in the NY area so I should get traffic, see how that works out.

So far, so good.

GARMIN RULES !

GARMIN RULES !

Best GPS

I agree, Garmin units are the best. I have had Garmin since the first Street Pilot. I now have a 765T and two 3790T. They work perfectly well over here in Europe (I live in Spain). If you live in a sunny climate like we here on the Mediterranean, beware of TomTom. The TomTom screens on all units are extremely dark and practically invisible in bright sunlight.

855 or 265WT

Dwaynes wrote:

I have had my 855 for about one year and love it. I don't use the speech recognition very much but this unit has got a lot of great features for the price.

I got the 855 for two reasons:

1. If you drive on expressways and interstates often, the 855 is worth the money for the Lane Assist view. I love that.

2. The speech recogn. is also a plus, but takes some time getting used to how to do it.

I also have a 265WT I use for work, I love the traffic feature, except it does not tell you which direction the tie ups are in, and the coupons are no big deal, easy to ignore, as they only come up when your standing still.

That's kind of like asking if you have stopped abusing your spouse. The Nuvi has absolutely nothing to do about the traffic, it reports what it gets when it gets it.

not sure how you are relating this with absuing a spouse and I wouldn't know that because I don't abuse my spouse.

traffic reports

da_libran wrote:

[So let me rephrease it for you.... Does Nuvi get accurate traffic info ?

The only answer that applies is: It is what it is. The question should be how accurate and timely is the traffic information provided by [insert supplier here]?

For that, the answer is not always. It's never 'real-time" it's always delayed. The delay depends on how it is prepared to send to the station and the amount of time it takes for the station to get it on the air. It's never close to what your favorite traffic reporter sees on their traffic camera monitors and hears from the scanners while reporting "on the eights."

I use the information as just that, information - as in "this may be the situation up ahead, try finding a local radio station report."

If you consider some stations don't have their main focus on "drive time periods" information may be updated only a couple of times an hour. Other stations are focused on peak drive times and offer near continuous updates. Traffic information flowing to the GPS from the traffic receiver falls somewhere between these extremes.

Best GPS Brand

After two Street Pilots and three nuvi's, I'm gonna have to say GARMIN all the way!

Can't go wrong with Garmin,

Can't go wrong with Garmin, which i own a few different models.

Best GPS around?

Best one would come with free lifetime traffic and free lifetime maps. I have the 1390t with free traffic, but for over $200 it should come with the maps too. Overall, very happy with it, and love the red light/speed camera info on this site.

I wish my 1390t also had

I wish my 1390t also had free lifetime maps. Seems they need updating/correcting where ever I end up going...but still happy with it as our first gps. Really love the red light and speed camera info.

In my opinion, Garmin.

In my opinion, Garmin. Period. They have set that bar higher than any other brand on the market. We used Garmins 24/7 while I was on tour of duty in Iraq. The military researches various GPS makers and technologies and chose the Garmin brand as their #1 choice. I am not biased at all, but given the facts and actual "real-life, Life dependant/saving" I must go with the Garmin. You can research all of the bells and whistles of other products on today's market but, the Garmin brand will stand alone. Don't go for gimmicks and fancily named features. A unit with free lifetime traffic alerts should be on the top of your list. I am ready to upgrade to a newer Garmins myself. As my traffic alert subsription expired a looong time ago. I miss that feature:( Choose a unit that has features that are most useful to your needs. Hope this helps smile

.

Now that the v4.00 FW update is live and solid, any of the 7x5's is a good bet. And, they're getting cheaper to boot.

Overall very happy with my 765t

Have not had a chance yet to try out after the 4.0 update but sounds like they fixed the minor problems that were left to fix but agree go with one with trafic.

No such thing as THE BEST one. Just get one that is half way decent. I use 255W and am fairly happy with it.

Bacause Garmin no longer produces reliable navigation devices.

The company now releases almost completely untested code and has cheaped out on their hardware underlay to the point where their Bluetooth interfaces are at best 'iffy' and the reliability of the hardware packages is less than acceptable.

Current products are riddled with serious software bugs - they like to use the public as their unpaid testers - and their tech support likes to make up witty responses to serious inquiries, drawing upon whatever strikes their fancy that day. There is little basis in fact for the comments one receives after suffering through long telephone waits or in their written responses to e-mailed inquiries.

The last of the reasonably bug-free autocmotive navigation devices from Garmin was the Nuvi 750/760/770/780 series.

WHAT'S THE BEST GPS OUT THERE?

Garmin 255w has been nearly flawless for us. Looking for something new, but having really hard time finding something substantially better. Like the lane assist feature. Is it worth a new unit for just that feature?

The Question Is

If so many people are disatified with the new garman's then why do they keep buying the new versions. Why not stay with a unit that works good and does what it is intended for. I still like and use my 660 and have had no need to compplain or upgrade. Just my thought. Not knocking any certain model.

+1

I vote with my wallet, and that's what corporations understand. The almighty $$$...

That said, I buy tend to buy quality first, and don't let a few dollars get in the way, especially for a long term purchase. You generally get what you pay for.

nüvi 3790T | Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, will make violent revolution inevitable ~ JFK

I have purchased three

I have purchased three Garmins and use two regularly. My first was a nuvi 350 which my daughter uses. I bought it in 2008. In 2009 I bought a nuvi 760 - wider screen and bluetooth. This year I bought a 885t which has bluetooth and also voice control. If I was in the market today I would buy a 765t or a 885t. Both have nice lane guidance in the upper left, bluetooth, are 4.2 inch screen (old wide screen), and display your speed even when navigating (the 760 does until you insert a destination). I have the 760 mounted semi-permanently in my SUV and the 885t on a BMW mount in my 128i convertible. Both are plugged into the radio accessory socket. On a trip and sometimes around town, I listen to MP3 files off SD memory cards in the nuvi. It switches to the phone if I get a call and interrupts the music for navigation instructions if I have that going. I have another suction cup mount so I can use the 760 in rental cars when I travel.

I have the GT20 with liftime traffic for the 760 and the 885t uses MSN direct. Both traffic services work, the MSN seems a little better but will go away in 17 months. Neither will tell you about a wreck that just happened. It takes time for them to notice it and get it broadcast so you can pick it up. They are always lagging. It will still show the wreck after it is cleaned up and will not show it for awhile after it happens. But they are useful. MSN is really nice with weather information including a radar map, gas prices and other stuff. But the newer Garmins have a similar system that is not going away.

If you do not need MP3 playback, you may want to look at the newer Garmins. If you want that feature, the 765t and 885t are the last and best ones with that capability.

Jim

885T

I have the Garmin 885T only bad thing about it is I have MSN for traffic and after 2012 no more MSN>

"Most people" aren't dissatisfied, per-se with Garmin. That's because they just don't know any better.

If you'd owned Garmin equipment before it became mass market and when was still configurable, then you would be disappointed as many among us are.

Note that I am not knocking any particular model - it is just that I have seen the company 'cross the line' as it refers to quality IMO with the release of units after the 750/760/770/780. That's when the hardware went to hell, the features became more important than reliability and the software started to crap out.

If all you knew was a 255 or an 885, then you you would have no benchmark against which to compare.

Garmin sells because they established a lot of goodwill early on - and most consumers don't know enough to have appropriate expectations.

best gps

It's between Garmin and TomTom. The TomTom is much more customizable and user friendly, but the Garmin has better maps, and (most of the time) better routing than TomTom. I keep switching back and forth between the 2 brands every time I buy one. If TomTom would use the same maps that Garmin uses, I would always buy TomTom.

Nuvi 755!!

I researched this unit before I ended up buying 265WT.(I'm quite happy)I found some complaining that the 755 has an issue with the touch screen. when I researched further there has been many more complains with regard to this issue. Pl. check it out before you buy it.

Best GPS

Garmin in my opinion; however, it all depends on your own tastes and what you like. Some people will say Magellan, others, Tom-Tom. Me? I like Garmin and have always owned Garmin.

I used to have a Mio about 2

I used to have a Mio about 2 years ago, now I have a Garmin 250. The Mio came with Canadian roads and major US roads, that wasn't a good feeling when we crossed the boarder on my wife's POGO tour and the only road displayed was the Interstate we were on. This year was a totally different story when we went to Winnipeg and we went through the US. I haven't needed to contact Garmin at all, but when I had issues with my Mio, their customer assistance was laughable. Oh yes I couldn't even find a place on Mio's website to buy the full US maps. So in my humble opinion Garmin is better.
