Nada, the bridge isn't on the map. Google Community (users) have posted their pics of the bridge. But there is no bridge on the map. The A is where the bridge should be, but it's not.

Garmin map update history

NuMaps Lifetime with its "up to four times per year" updates was announced by Garmin in the fall of 2008. Below are the release dates for map updates issued via the NuMaps Lifetime program.

2010.10 April 8, 2009
2010.20 July 30, 2009
2010.30 November 19, 2009
2010.40 January 21, 2010

Nice recap. Those dates seem correct to me. smile

Next year updates - Today!

I'm thinking this is a legacy thing from when we all used to buy street atlases.

I seem to remember that they'd always sell them as the upcoming year, not the current year. For example, Rand McNally's Road Atlas 2010 was released April 27, 2009.

Now, long ago this may have been a marketing thing of:
Do we tell the customer the date that the data was gathered or the estimated expiration date of the data?

I don't think this is some covert ploy by Garmin, though. I think it's just the way it is.

I seem to remember back when you bought paper-based atlases that you'd buy one with the thought of, "Oh, this should be good through next year..."

Last year?

Same with a lot of things. "Next year's model" becomes available during the current year. Like automobiles...

Next year? Try five + years. Seriously, the last one I through out a few years ago was from 2001. LOL

Actually, that's April fools, not April 1st. wink

I love it when I don't think

I love it when I don't think before I act. I just downloaded 2010.4 when I probably should have waited to see if 2011 comes around. I'm sorry, I was just so excited for the new unit.

Probably soon

I'm not sure if it is legitimate or not, but I have just seen 2011.10 posted on another board. The board mentioned is considered a "warez" board.

Map Copyright Date Change

This year I'm going to pay attention to the Navteq Map copyright year that is displayed while the GPS boots up. Map 2010.40 says "2009". When it updates to "2010" I figure this would indicate approx how old the maps are that Garmin provides to us.

figure about 1 - 1.5 year delay from the time NAVTEQ releases and Garmin does their magic to it, and you get it. This is the main reason people don't see timely corrections in the quarterly releases.

Time Delay

Yes there is a substantial delay between the time NAVTEQ releases a map update and Garmin implements it. It took until the Summer of 2009 to get an update I reported in the Summer of 2008 implemented. I currently have a NAVTEQ report that was closed in December 2009 and I am waiting to see when Garmin gets that update. At the moment, the map on the main NAVTEQ page does not show the change but the map on their Map Reporter site does.

I've seen 2011.10 on other sites so I am guessing it has been released already.

Any reputable sites? Like non-warez, or industry sites? I'm thinking not.

After it was announced above, I Googled it and nothing official was there. Lot's of crap, though.

2011.10

I've been checking the Garmin website and see no mention of such an update at all.

I've got the lifetime updates so I assume it will offer me the update as soon as it is available.

For what Garmin charges for

For what Garmin charges for a map update and even the lifetime maps, I don't think it's very cost effective to update everytime there is an "update". I have had my GPS for a year and a half and so far has worked well for me. I have a new section of freeway that was completed a couple of years ago and that is not on the currently installed map. I'm not going to spend the extra $ just so I can see that section of freeway. I will wait for another year or so and update (unless I buy a newer unit with a newer map already installed).

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Near Home

I would agree that when roads you are personally familiar with change, you may not care to have them also shown on an updated map.

The reason I bought the lifetime maps is for road changes in cities or areas that are strange to me, that I may have never been to before.

Larger map file than before

I just put 2011.10 on my nüvi 650. For the first time I found I could not install the entire map due to space limits. I opted for the US and Canada map. The all of North America map would not fit.

The download was uneventful but slow; it took nearly 2 hours to download and then another hour and half to install. It works fine but too soon to see anything new. The map is still missing a bypass around Strasburg, PA that opened last fall.

Possible Way to Know An Update Will Happen

With the release of 2011.10 and the incorporation of the update I noted above, I now have an indication what appears to be a way to tell if a reported map change will appear in the next upcoming release of Garmin maps. This has happened twice now so it may not be 100% accurate.

The NAVTEQ web site has two online map viewers. The viewer available on the main page and another viewer available to users who register and log in to the Map Reporter site. The maps on the Map Reporter site are newer and appear to get updated almost as soon as a map report is confirmed and closed. For the report I noted above, that change appears on the Map Reporter maps but not the main NAVTEQ maps. However, Garmin has picked up the change with 2011.10. Also, I had noted back in December that a three year old neighborhood in Stuart, FL appeared on the NAVTEQ Map Reporter map viewer just before Garmin 2010.40 picked it up in January. The main NAVTEQ site did not show it.

if facing space restrictionson your nuvi...

...can't you install to the SD card slot? I see that the 650 has one. Seems like with the right sized card you could fit whatever Garmin puts out (doesn't the SD card support up to 4 GB? Not sure if the 650 supports SDHC, which would support up to 32 GB)

Map copyright date is still

Map copyright date is still 2009, so that implies that the delay between when NAVTEQ provides the map data and Garmin releases it is least 3.5 months. Last year the first update that had 2009 copyright was the July update, so the delay appears to be between 3.5 and 6.5 months from the time that Garmin receives the map data and they release it to the wild.

I like that they now include Mexico, including POI's. I just hope they didn't remove any US POI's to make room...they were skimpy enough as they are.

SD can support 4GB but they are very rare. I have only seen one in my life and it was a no-name branded card. 2GB is the normal maximum for an SD card. My ancient Streetpilot C330 supports SDHC and I have had no issues with 4GB and 8GB on that unit so I would imagine any newer device could support SDHC.

Note that not every device that supports SDHC can support 32GB.

The update went fine, but took a while. It was over 2GB. There was also a software update for my Garmin. GPS seems faster now. I will test the new maps today.

Did You Lose A Lot of Free Space

I may have messed up, but, I installed the 2011.10 map update, and when it completed, it said something like "due to space limitations regional maps have been installed. Use Map Source to install additional maps to an SD card"

I have a Nuvi 200W, and after the update I had 735M left on my internal drive. I had previously deleted all of the unused voice, language and help files.

I went to map source, and tried to install the Lower 49 States, plus PR, and I didn't have enough space, just like the Map Install said. I was only able to install east of the Mississippi river and a couple other states before I ran out of space. Is this about right, or have I done something wrong?

Does this mean that previously, I probably didn't have as many maps as I thought?

Beas

I need to jump on this fast.

Does anyone know if update space is by model or actual space?

On my c530, I too eliminated a lot of useless files (languages, etc) to provide more room for the update. I knew I couldn't load the entire map, but thought I might get additional options, like Lower 49 states instead of just regions. However, I got the same options as before. My guess is that the updater makes the decision of what to offer based on the model # and not actual space. Does anyone know for sure?
