Latest Garmin Innovations Coming (April 1)

Apparently Garmin is really upping the ante regarding their annual map offerings, I don't know if this applies to the incremental updates for you lifetime subscribers: (The following was copied from Garmin's website)

We are making our map data even better! The North America 2011 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product
Some enhancements include: Better routing, widening of your existing screen on your current Garmin GPS and the highly anticipated DUI mode. With this map update, and your GPS plugged into your vehicle via cigarette lighter, you can activate the DUI/auto pilot mode and your GPS will drive your vehicle for you while you catch much needed sleep to sober up. These are a few of the enhancements you can look forward to in May 2010.

Wow! wink

Ummm...

Yeah, right confused rolleyes laugh out loud Good one.

Autopilot

I don’t DUI but that autopilot mode could be handy for doing things like reloading your spent cases after a drive by shooting and stuff like that.

Wow

OK, are any of these true? Remember I am blond grin

Can't wait to try autopilot, but if I get pulled over, who gets the ticket?

Well

Obviously, the owner of the car...same as a red light/speed camera ticket. Doesn't matter who's driving! smile

Who gets ticketed using Autopilot

I don't understand most of the technology but from what I've learned so far, the software update equips your GPS with proximity sensors to detect vehicles and other obstacles which in turn gets inputted into the algorithm that tells your Nuvi whether or not to stop or go.

Additionally traffic lights have been equipped with sensors and transmitters to receive a signal from emergency vehicles (i.e. firetrucks, ambulances, police cars, etc.) so they can remotely change the lights enabling them to enter intersections safely.

That same technology is being delpoyed in reverse so the traffic lights can send an advance signal to your GPS notifying it when it is going to change to a red light. Of course nothing is fool proof and the driver is ultimately responsible and has manual override ability.
wink

Ha Ha

Sounds like an April Fools joke to me. A Nuvi that's plugged into the cigarette lighter socket can't control the steering and gas/break pedals.

Tight lines

Just downloaded it. . . .

Now having several beers so I can try out the DUI Mode. Notice that the DUI mode won't work correctly unless driver is over the legal limit. wink wink wink

Looking for a place to go this summer? Try Oshkosh, WI, July 20-26, 2015. The largest gathering of aircraft in the world. http://www.airventure.org/index.html

Of course it works

A Nuvi that's plugged into the cigarette lighter socket can control the steering and gas/break pedals.

It the same method Toyota uses, It's done with the wireless acceleration from the computer. All newer cars have the ability to be remote steered, it just hasn't been used as of yet. Garmin has exploited the rack and pinon remote sensors and uses them for auto pilot steering.
As far as the breaks go, I really don't understand the way they work. May be we can get some one else to chime in on them.

2 DriveSmart 65's - We do not live in Igloo's and do not all ride to work on snow mobiles.

April Fool

That became obvious in the first sentence of the third paragraph.

April's Fools Joke

For sure it's a joke. However, has anyone ever seen those geeks at one university or someplace, they were actually driving their car remotely with their iPhone. The key word, THEY were driving it, not the car. It'll be nice if we had KITT to drive our cars. I still don't know how good Lexus does with their auto parking.

Here is the Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHDwKT564Kk

does it come with an alarm

DUI mode

When DUI mode is activated the speech is slurred and it tells the driver how much it loves them.
