You can set the 1490T to always show your direction of travel either North UP or track UP using the Tools - Settings - Map - Map View options.
Nuvi 350, 780, 1490T, 3970T and TomTom 540s

Thanks! I found that as long as I stay out of Pedestrian mode it will allow up to be direction of travel. Guess when in deep woods I will remain out of Pedestrian mode.
Maybe Garmin will change this feature.
