If you are going to need a new, full-featured unit, the best deal now is the 765T with lifetime maps for $250 from Amazon and Costco. That deal will probably be no worse next year and could very well be better.

Update with Vista...

I had to set the update program you download to compatability mode with WinXP SP2 to get it to work on my Vista system. Just FYI.

Edit: Jeez! Wrong thread, although this had to do with my lifetime update. Sorry....

The online map code version is still $90.

I thought I got a good price when I paid $80. so this is a vg price.

Must have been a one day sale because it's $89+ today.

I bought it. Awesome

However it does not define life time being cut short because Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier. So if Garmin somehow wiggles out of their contract with Navteq and goes to TeleAtlas every one is screwed and the contract you have for Garmin nüMaps Lifetime is null and void. even though your Garmin GPSr is far from dead.
Amazon is a reputable company, but spend your dollars wisely.

Is Garmin planning on going to TeleAtlas? I was looking into a way to download the lifetime maps due to my 5gb limit before I buy them but if they are planning on changing I will wait to see if they offer a new lifetime.

Not that I know of, but just gave an example of possibilities.

Are the updates noticable afterwards? I updated the factory installed one in the truck but we have noticed no change whatsoever and the cost of this was 199.00 and they send me a notice every year to update which is 199.00 every year. I have a Garmin in my car and am getting ready to purchase the lifetime for it so was just wondering if you notices changes but most likely how would you even know if there was changes made.

I didn't even know of such a thing. Lifetime? Can you change GPS hardware? Anyway, I am excited and going to look for it now.

BTW, I bought something like that for a Navigon I bought. Shame that the Navigon never worked for me since the initial update - a street with a East/West designation would crash the GPS! I returned the GPS and the limited time update card is gathering dust in the basement.

It's for the life of your Garmin device and is not transferable to other Garmin devices. If you lose your GPS or if the device dies and it's out of warranty, the lifetime license dies with it.

I bought it

I bought the lifetime update from Amazon with no problems. I figure it's cheaper than 2 standard upgrades and I will definitely do the updates when they become available. The last update fixed problems with freeway changes in my area and I want the most up to date info when traveling. For me, it was worth it. I plan to keep my 760 for a long time. I don't see any compelling reason to "upgrade" to the newer units.

$69.99

With Houston's freeways undergoing major construction, I decided to fork out the 70 bucks to ensure I get all the updates. Glad to know that was a good price & am hoping my new 755T will last at least 3 years…

Just a stupid question I

Just a stupid question I have 2 GPS can I update both with the same garmin lifetime map update or do I need to buy 2 updates ? Bet I know the answer

One update required for each Garmin

You will need to buy 2 updates, one for each device to be updated...

Shop around

$87.99 at www.autonavdirect.com.

Bought mine there last year and was pleased with service. They had an ad here at Poi-Factory.

Never quite sure about Amazon vendors being reputable or not.

Are there advertisements on POI Factory? I don't recall ever seeing one.

Huh?? User name doesn't appear anywhere if you're not signed in.

[EDIT]
I just re-read your sentence. I misunderstood the first time I read it. Ignore please.

Btw, ads block plus does the job very well. I don't see any ads. I do see ads when I use IE.

A reason to use IE???

Other than getting updates to Windoze.

I think it sucks, I own 4 garmin gps's so basically I have to buy 4 lifetime updates for 4 units. Good for garmin, bad for consumer.

I'll check it out

I'm due for an update. I'll have to check it out and determine if I'm going to keep my Nuvi 680 or maybe upgrade to the 765T from Costco. Maybe I'll buy both, keep the 765T for myself, update the 680 and give it to my wife, and retire her 650. Hmmmm.

Yes, it is bad for you or anyone else with multiple GPSs. But then why should you be able to update 4 units for the same price I have to pay to update my 1 unit?

A reason to use IE???

I don't know why but I still trust IE when it comes to personal financial stuff (eg: paying credit card bills, checking my account balance etc). Firefox is my favorite browser for websites other than financial related sites.

A reason to use IE???

I hate to say, but, Firefox is far more secure than IE. Firefox has more frequent updates, so they get the holes plugged faster. I use a program called PSI to check my work PC for vulnerabilities and patches, adn it's always listing IE as insecure. Even Chrome and Safari are better.

in my not so humble opinion.

Sorta Like Multi-seat Licenses

It's no different than software licensing on your PC. One per computer unless you get a mult-seat license.

Go buy a Rand McNally, if you want one for each car, well, you know the answer to this.

Though I wouldn't mind seeing a multi-unit discount offered.

Updating Maps

Lifetime updates for $90, or a new 255W for $125. I can understanding buying a new nuvi over a map update until either every car or family member has a GPS.

Hmmm yes

WalkThisWay wrote:

But then all of your older units will have outdated maps on them. I agree that is seems silly to pay $90 for a new map when you can buy the entire unit, with new maps, for just a few bucks more.

Good Thinking

Never thought about it that way.....good idea, electronics only last a few years anyway, and being exposed to hot/cold/wet and dry cycles everyday, its only a matter of time before the unit dies.
