amazon.com Garmin lifetime map update

I just ordered the Garmin lifetime map update from Amazon.com..Just looking for feed backs from anyone who ordered this product from them before..Thanks!

No problems

I ordered the lifetime update from Amazon at the beginning of the year. I think I even got free super saver shipping so it took about 7 days to get to me. Used the code, logged into Garmin, downloaded the update with no problems. Everything went smoothly.

no problems either

I also ordered mine through Amazon when they were having one of their 1 day fire sales (around $80 w/free shipping). Had it in about a week. No problems using it at all.

Same story here.

You should have no issues. Enjoy.

Wow $80!

$91.77 today with free S&H:

No Problem

I got lucky I found POI factory first and there was a post about the process because Garmin was not as clear as they could have been. I have had the update for about 9 months and when I first tried to use the life time update it would not take the code because I had updated my new Garmin the day before so there were no updates. After the next map update it was smooth sailing.

At the time it was between $15 - $40 cheaper than any other place I could find.

AMAZON ORDER

I was under the impression that map updates are downloaded - so why would I need free shipping? Also, is there any additional registration to download the updates from Garmin if you buy the updates from Amazon?

.

Yes, it's a download but it's a download from GARMIN not from Amazon.

Amazon mails you a card with the update code on it.

Free Shipping

EARL-M wrote:

The map updates are indeed downloaded. When you purchase the updates from Amazon, you receive a card with a code that is used in the process to download the map updates.

The free shipping applies to the shipment of the card, not the map updates.

Yes, but...

Yes, your link takes you to the Online Map Code purchase page. But for some reason no one has been able to explain, Amazon is now (and has been for some time) selling the online code for more than the mailed "credit card" code. Currently, the mailed card with free S&H is $90.85 while the online Map Code sells for $95.99. So unless you really need a lifetime map code in the next couple of days, go for the mailed card and save about $5.

map card packaging

It is surprising how overpackaged the card is ... in a huge, impossible to open plastic bubble pack. I don't still have mine, but as I recall, it was about 8" x 10" x 1/2". So there is a shipping cost involved, and free shipping is good.

You have to buy a sharp scissor to open the package smile

Several months ago, I purchased the card from the cheapest seller on Amazon (The one that has it right now for $78.99 + $4.99).

It came within a couple of days and worked 100%.

Worked fine, and cheaper than any other option.

Value?

Does anyone know the value in updating maps 4 times per year like you get to do with the lifetime updates? I guess I am asking if you have noticed that the things you need are changed, corrected or added? I have no sense how many changes are made to the maps in any given quarter.

I just purchased the Oregon. I backpack a lot and I travel a lot on business. In backpacking, I usually bring a paper quad and back up my nav with the GPS. When I travel I wanted a GPS that I can use to drive. I purchased the City Navigator DVD and just got the free update to the January maps. Now I am wondering how long I can wait to pay for another update.

Any ideas?

Before the lifetime program, maps were updated once per year. Many users, they would upgrade every other time. I have purchased the lifetime maps. There are small changes on each upgrade, however if new roads or highways have gone in and are caught in the upgrade, then the change can be significant in a particular area. I guess the real question is how happy you were with the accuracy of paper maps and how often you changed them for newer maps.

In each of the past several quarterly updates, I've found streets and POIs in Arizona are much improved over the previous version, in that new or rerouted streets are corrected--the improved updated built-in POIs, speed limits, etc. are a pleasant bonus, too. In fact, the new maps are frequently ahead of Google Earth's images of an area. I will gladly spend the 2-4 hours to update my two nuvis to the latest map four times a year.

Your mileage may vary.

Value of quarterly Garmin updates

I find that listings in the Northeast Ohio region are rare: an occasional new street or exit/entrance ramp - but otherwise the differences are minimal. Personally, I'm hard pressed to justify regularly updating my Garmin with new maps when the changes are significant; it seems like the update takes forever to u/l the national map updates.

How often does Garmin update

How often does Garmin update their maps? I see the lifetime update is up to 4 per year, do they actually do 4 per year?

yes 4 x

every year

value of life time updates

I'm curious of the opinions of other Garmin users here. I have a Nuvi 370 and am debating about getting the lifetime updates. If I go the NA route it's $119 on the Garmin site, or $149 for both NA and Europe. Is it worth going for the updates on an older model or is more economical to get a newer version? One of the things I don't have on my 370 is the ability to store routes, otherwise it works fine.

Just curious what other users think, thanks.

Amazon map updates

Right now the online download and the shipped card versions are both $89+. Any opinion on which I should order?

Do they work with Win 7? Amazon doesn't list that platform for the online version.

I have a nuvi 200 which I love and see no reason to upgrade. I understand that the internal memory will not be enough for the new maps and some region(s) will have to go on an SD card. Will the map download process give me a choice of which region I want in internal memory and which I want on the card? Is access speed from the card comparable to internal memory?

Correct; two units that need City Navigator Map Updates need two purchases.

hm...

what happens when your unit dies. There goes the lifetime deal?

Yup

Its for the lifetime of that one particular unit only(assuming its out of warranty when it dies).

Garmin nüMaps Lifetime,Life time not what the dictonary defines

Garmin wrote:

If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription (sold separately), you will receive up to four (4) map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter.

Dictionary.com wrote:

life·time /[lahyf-tahym] –noun

1.) the time that the life of someone or something continues; the term of a life: peace within our lifetime.
2.) Physics. mean life.
–adjective
3.) for the duration of a person's life: He has a lifetime membership in the organization.

The dictionary does mention, cutting lifetime short by the death of something or someone in number 1,which is totally understandable.

However it does not define life time being cut short because Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier. So if Garmin somehow wiggles out of their contract with Navteq and goes to TeleAtlas every one is screwed and the contract you have for Garmin nüMaps Lifetime is null and void. even though your Garmin GPSr is far from dead.

Amazon is a reputable company, but spend your dollars wisely.

Is Garmin planning on going to TeleAtlas? I was looking into a way to download the lifetime maps due to my 5gb limit before I buy them but if they are planning on changing I will wait to see if they offer a new lifetime.

My brother is about to join us nuvi-users with the arrival of a 265WT next week. I forwarded the Amazon $70 link to him and told him to buy now since I expect the price to be back around $90 tomorrow or soon thereafter. Thanks to POIFactory members for finding the deal and sharing with us all.

The last time the lifetime maps were near this price was around Black Friday when they went for $75. Buy now and don't use it until you have a new unit.
