Nuvi 200

Yes and No

Will the latest Garmin maps work on an old Nuvi 200?

The 200 doesn't have enough internal memory to handle all the data in the latest update. One way Garmin has resolved this is to load a stripped version of the data eliminating some of the detail. Another solution they used was to segment the file and only load part of the entire file, usually just leaving some areas out.

At least that was my understanding.

Is the stripped down version

Is the stripped down version loaded automatically or do I have to cut the file manually down to size?

I believe Garmin has it set

I believe Garmin has it set up so it can deliver the map by region. However, continue reading. I own a nuvi 200W, and with every map update have to split the map onto internal memory and SD card.

With 2010.4, assuming that you remove all the unneeded language files and help files, you can fit all of the lower 48 states except for Oregon and California on there. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the small Carribean islands also fit in the internal memory.

I know that this is true because my 200W is set up in this fashion. In addition, on a 1GB SD card I have loaded Oregon, California, Alaska, Canada, and Mexico. And I still have about 500MB left.

So...get a SD card and you can load the rest of the country on it. After you add the SD card, your computer should see TWO drives on your Garmin.

You'll need "MapInstall" from Garmin (free download) to get the entire US. NOTE: You will NOT be loading the entire map update in once action.

So first, do your map update and select a region of the U.S. that either has the main areas you want, or at least can remember what states are already loaded. This will go onto your main drive on the Garmin.

Next run MapInstall, and 1) choose the rest of the map that was not included in the main update, and 2) be sure to choose the SECOND drive on your Garmin (the SD card) as your destination.

That's it. Once you disconnect and start up your Garmin, you'll have ALL of the map update available to you. Your device will recognize the SD card and the maps available on it transparently.

The MapInstall page at Garmin says that it needs MapSource to work:

The Mapsource page says that you can only get it on a DVD or CD from Garmin. So do I have to purchase that in order to update my map with the entire country?

Here's the right-now free way to do it:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsour...

Also, if/when you update your nuvi to the latest City Navigator North America NT, you can tell the Garmin download to install the map to your GPS and your computer by selecting the Advanced rather than the Standard installation process. Doing so will install Mapsource if your computer doesn't have it installed already.

.

Thanks.

EXCELLENT tutorial

I now master that technique, but it took me so darn long to learn it the hard way... My problem was loading all of Europe on a 205T, I wish I'd found this like a year ago !
