Arizona cameras now on ballot in 9 communities

Seems there may be a groundswell forming in Arizona against Traffic cams.

Banning them is on the November ballot in 9 communities.

I read that the camera

I read that the camera company were trying to get the law changed to get rid of the need for personal service of the tickets.

I thought it was just the freeway cameras that were going onto the ballot, but that article makes it seem like the city ones are coming down too. Does anyone know anything more.

Hmm

Interesting. Looks like it WILL be defeated then.

This was interesting though

“They track us everywhere we go,” says Phoenix resident Shawn Dow. “It’s unbelievable. I can’t go anywhere and not have a camera tracking me.”

Are we really being tracked by cameras ???

Tracking?

Not yet by those traffic cams. But in a state that has lots of traffic flow "monitoring" cams, it would be easy to do.

Visit http://www.trafficland.com to see how dense some of these cams are - in Philadelphia or NYC, for instance.

I don't think they have coverage every foot of the way, but they can certainly tell what exit you get off at. And I know for a fact that in Virginia, the newer ones can pan extremely fast, they can zoom and the raw video the DOT gets is very high resolution. It's much better than what Trafficland displays and Trafficland gets its video from the state DOT's. Trafficland reduces the resolution so they don't need as much bandwidth to supply veiwers.

At a lot of the

At a lot of the intersections here in the Phoenix, AZ area there are small cameras mounted above the traffic lights. These monitor the traffic activity at various intersections. I didn't really notice them that much but the more I look while driving in town, there are actually quite a few of them. A lot of times when watching the news where they are reporting traffic accidents, they use footage from these cameras. Pretty detailed too. They give the location, day, date and time.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Glad to see it

I am glad to see that it looks like the initiative to ban the cameras will be on the state ballot in Arizona. The reference to 9 communities was actually for elections that have taken place in the past where cameras were banned. As for whether the cameras track you or not, I believe I saw an article some time back that said that the ticketing cameras could keep track of every license plate that passed through an intersection. I'm not sure what the capability is of the smaller cameras used for traffic control. I am thinking they are not set up for this, but who knows.
