Garmin 285W self-reboots

I've searched the forums and only found this problem for other models. I'm starting a thread for those experiencing this issue.

I recently bought a Nuvi 285WT from Amazon (on sale for $100). The thing works well, except that it occasionally (actually, more often than not) reboots when turned on. I've updated the firmware and am still trying to observe.

Anyone else in the same boat? Thanks.

Reboots

Is there any pattern to what triggers the reboot? For example, does it reboot only when navigating or also when using the menu? Does it happen both when receiving a traffic signal and when not receiving a signal? Only when navigating a route?

Spurious restarts

I have one of the Amazon $100 285WT units and have not had any spurious shutdown/restarts.

If yours is restarting on its own “more often than not” then there must be something wrong with it. I think you should contact Amazon and/or Garmin and get a replacement.

Nuvi restarts

I just bought a Nuvi 285WT from Amazon and received it yesterday and have experienced the restarting issue. I drove into Los Angeles this morning and it restarted once in the 100 minute drive. On the way back to my office, a 30 minute drive, it restarted again. I did insert my SD card, that was used on my 3 year old Nuvi 680, into the SD slot of the new 285WT unit. When the unit starts up, it asks if the data on the SD card should be installed on the unit. When I select yes, I will get the message that the process failed. Perhaps it is because there are MP3 files on the SD card and the 285WT cannot handle the MP3 files.

I will continue to monitor this issue to see if I should return the unit for another one.

I have returned the unit to Amazon for a refund. I will decide on re-ordering this one or another Nuvi model. I have to admit I did like the features and value of the 285wt.
