External Annetna?

Does anyone have an external anntena for their garmin? I have a C550 and find that when in downtown philadelphia - In the middle of center city I loose reception... Now I resort to look at the directions when I am in a major city (NYC, Philly, Boston) before going into the city because I fear of being turned around and around like I was in Boston once.

Does it need to be wired into your car? Or does it just sit on the roof and you can run the wire through your car without having someone tear apart you car!?!

And if you do have it which one do you have?

Thanks!

You can get Magnetic mount ones

And use when needed - you don't have to do a permanent install - just route the cable where it will be minimally pinched when closing the car door.

Check Out some on Ebay

Buying on ebay?

I am always so worried to buy things on e-bay - I am not a big ebayer... Would this be something any of you would recommend to do?!?! I am the one who always thinks you are going to get ripped off...I am the type that will buy from the manufacturer and get something for $100 that I could have gotten for $30 smile

Has anyone bought from someone on e-bay and had success - If so do you know the seller?

I bought one

of these - had zero problems with the transaction.

Thank you

I will give it a try - Thanks so much!

External antennas from

External antennas from Gilsson get very good reviews and are resonably priced (from their yahoo storefront, they are more expensive if you purchase from their main website). The standard model is $22.95, a low profile version for $29.95, and 55db model for $34.95. I have the standard one and it definatly helps reception in cities. When I was in Prague my iQue was useless without the external antenna. With the external antenna reception wasn't great, but good enough that the gps was usable. The right angle connector can be difficult to remove, the straight connector sticks out more, but is easier to remove.

I have the external anntena on the dash as close to the widshield as I can get it . It works just fine and then you can put the garmin down and out of public sight

ive heard that some window tints obstruct / lessen the GPS signal.. does anyone know if this is true?

I don't know for sure about

I don't know for sure about the GPS signal, but I know that XM radio signals can be blocked if the window tint is metallic. (ie, has actual metal in it)

I used to have an issue with

I used to have an issue with the GPS signal taking very long to kick in. The satellite signals would search and search and search. I had the GPS mounted at the top of the windshield and most of you may know, that darker area of the windshield that runs across the top was the cause. I have moved the GPS to the bottom left of my windshield and have not had a problem since. Signal strength kicks in immediately. As for the traffic signal, I have the antenna running along the bottom of the windshield stretched out and the suction cups that are on the GTM 12 hold it there for me so all is good.

Window Tint Impact

Yes, metallic window tint can impact GPSr performance.

It will also affect the EZ Pass/IPass automatic toll deduction system that exists in Illinois, New Jersey and other states.
