Arizona's Top Cop Criticizes Speed Cameras

It seems to me Director Halliday has a grasp of all the issues concerning speed cameras. It will be interesting to see what happens here in the only AAA-recognized statewide speed trap in the US.

Speed Cameras

It is shocking that so few people pay the fines.

Going to Phoenix next week

and I am not worried one bit about the speed cameras because I intend to stay within the speed limit set by the state or at least not go 11 miles an hour over it. I will rest easy,

BTW I do agree with the top cop and like to see people on the ground but in todays budget mess this may be one way if done right.

And how will you feel after a speeder blows by and the camera takes a picture of YOUR plate?

I'm looking forward to the issue being placed on the November ballot. From what I've read on the web, every state that let the voters decide on the speed cameras, in each case the voters decided to have the cameras removed.

Yeah!

OK.....so where the heck am I?

And the winner is...

And like always it may turn for worse that it was.
...The Arizona Senate Public Safety and Human Services Committee approved legislation last Wednesday that would substantially expand the size and scope of the photo enforcement program in the state...

What even more interesting is real author behind legislation:
...the measure was in fact drafted by Redflex Traffic Systems, a firm based in Australia. The company listened to lawmaker complaints and included some mild changes that would not affect the company's existing practice, such as a change in the signage requirements. The legislation also included a number of items of direct financial interest to the company...
...Under the current program, for example, a vehicle must be accused of traveling 11 MPH above the speed limit before Redflex can mail a photo citation. The Redflex legislation eliminates this buffer and allows the issuance of tickets for driving as little as 1 MPH over the limit in either a school zone or highway work zone....

How long it takes to extend last measure to any other places than school and work zones?
So before you declare victory over government just look over your shoulder, as probably yo will be stabbed from behind.

Florida

During my three weeks here in Florida I have seen a number of speed cameras, I also have seen signs with NO cameras,,,interesting. There is still debate here about the use of speed cameras, with some county administrators not on the bandwagon. I can tell you this,,,,something needs to be done because A LOT OF PEOPLE RUN LIGHTS !!!!!!

People Of AZ Revolt Against Ticket Cameras

Just saw this article about how much the people of AZ hate these cameras and are not paying the tickets.

It's called an "Absolute Speed"

School zone speed limits are under a different statute making them absolute speeds. You can be cited for going 1 mph over in a school zone already. You can be cited for going at or under the speed limit on a regular street (although they are going to have to show that your speed wasn't reasonable and prudent for the conditions.) I'd wouldn't be surprised if they approve a registration photo violation, but the cell phone thing is not going to happen since there is no law banning the use of cell phones while driving (except texting in Phoenix.) I'd prefer they do the registration violations over an 11 mph violation on the freeway. I think it's moot anyway. If this goes on the ballot, the state cameras will go away.
