Question on Garmin nuvi200

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200, our first GPS. Since I have found this site, we've put several POI's in it to visit.

One thing I had wanted to put on this unit was the NPS Register of Historical Places. The one for our region (South) is almost 5 megs in size.

How do you tell what capacity memory you have in a Nuvi 200, and I know it has a spot for a flash card, but what size (megabytes) will it accept? Will the POI Loader put part of the files on the flash card?

Also, I updated the map in mine after our first trip (and talking to a sales rep friend of mine who sells these) - is it better to update the map on one of these (entry level) units, or better to get a better unit? I was disappointed (but not surprised) to find out that the updates you would purchase weren't transferrable to newer units.

We were disappointed in using it in Atlanta on a recent trip, as it had all sorts of problems getting its bearings. We would be out & a couple miles away from where we stayed before the unit would figure out we were in Atlanta, much less the street we were on.

I'd appreciate any input on this device or suggestions about where to go next.

SD card.

If you have current software versions, you should be able to put any size SD card in the unit, although 2 GB should be plenty for most users.

I think only you can answer your second question, but for me, I would not spend money updating a nuvi 200. For a few dollars more, you could get a new unit with new maps.

Answer. You can connect the gps to the computer.Click on the Garmin drive and right click on it.Go to properties. It will show you how much space used and remaining.Yes you can use a flash card I think 2gb is recommended.

Answer. The maps supplied with your unit are the same with all units. The coverage area may include more areas.Right you can't transfer to another unit except for a few exceptions.Like stolen with a police report.

We were disappointed in using it in Atlanta on a recent trip, as it had all sorts of problems getting its bearings. We would be out & a couple miles away from where we stayed before the unit would figure out we were in Atlanta, much less the street we were on.

Answer.Make sure you have the latest updates using WebUpdater.

I'd appreciate any input on this device or suggestions about where to go next.

Nuvi 200 updates

I updated mine about a month after I had it. I had gone thru an area where they had re-routed a highway in NC, and it was telling me everywhere to go to get back to the "old" road.

The map version in it was fairly recent. What it says under Map Info is:

City Navigator North America NT 2009
[1] City Navigator Lower 48 States NT 2009

I believe I updated it sometime in November 2008 or so.

The problem we experienced in Atlanta was where we would get out on the street, after having punched in an address in our room, and then starting to drive, and having to get several miles away from where we were (just downtown Atlanta) before it would get it's bearings. It had worked fine all the way down there, and from what I have noticed, it seems to take it longer & longer to get its bearings around an area.

Garmin just released the last of the 2010 map year updates. You can get this version, 2010.40 or wait unitl the 2011 maps start coming out in April/May. These mapsets are too large to fit in your NUVI, but you can install the maps for the areas you use most and the remainder will then go to an SD card.

Deleting unused voices, help files, and text files will free up additional space on the unit.

An update using web updater will help as changes were made to the GPS chip software. What helps even more is letting the unit lock onto the satellites before entering an address. You can normally get a satellite lock by being near a window. Then, when you go outside the unit will already have fresh satellite data and lock on much quicker,
