Just downloaded new update for nuvi 680. May be available for other 6xx series as well. Version 4.70 to 4.80 dated Dec. 15, 2009

for the 6xx series

This update apparently applies to the entire 6xx series, which includes my 660.

I always like to read what changes were made in a new release. Looks like they may have finally fixed the mp3 skipping problem. Here is the change history from ver 4.70 to 4.80:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 4.80:

  • Updates to text and translations.
  • Fixed issue where custom POI was not displaying full detail when paired with a phone.
  • Fixed an issue with MP3s resuming after a proximity alert.
  • Fixed a Safety Camera issue that could cause the unit to not respond properly.
  • Fixed issue where zoom scale was missing from the bottom of the View Map screen while in 2D modes.
  • Fixed issue with ignoring turn restrictions and ramps.
  • Fix a problem with speech sounding garbled under certain conditions.
  • Improved performance of BNG coordinates.
  • Fixed issue where traffic lines were drawing on top of roads.
  • Fixed issue with missing detailed maps when Custom POI's were loaded.
  • Corrected handling of Eniwetok time zone.
  • Improved keyboard backspace function on Coordinates Edit page.
  • Fixed some issues with searching for cities in various languages.

Here is the complete release history webpage covering all versions:

This is a pretty extensive list of fixes. The longest I've seen in a while for this model series. I think I'll let a few other brave souls try it first and wait for feedback. I'm chicken. mrgreen wink

An amazingly impressive list for a model that has been discontinued for, what must be, a year now. Garmin's support continues to impress.

I'll try it--

on my son's 660, and if it flies, I'll do my 680 next week!

Something about applying updates to a "production machine" -- never in too much of a hurry unless it's to fix a bug that's currently biting me in the kazoo...

No Update for Me

My 680 currently works great. I see absolutely no reason to update unless it resolves something that is currently causing me problems. smile

Testing new release.

Don't know when I will get to Eniwetok to make sure the time zone feature is correct. Honestly, I didn't even know I had all those problems to be fixed! Going to be tough to make sure they work now when I never knew they were broke. So far, no ill effects from the download. Just happy to see that our older, discontinued products are not forgotten. Heading out of town tomorrow, so may have more later. No pain no gain. Happy Holidays.

OK, we'll let you off the hook regarding the Eniwetok time zone fix. mrgreen

But, by all means, have a very Merry Christmas and a safe trip exclaim

Thanks for letting us know about this update, by the way. I would have missed it entirely. wink

660 update

Well, just downloaded the 4.80 and installed it.

Screen said up to 38 minutes to install. Took less than 5 min. Didn't think the USB update the other week would make that much difference.

Seems to be OK. Will know when we go to NJ soon.

Next Map Update

For those of us who may decide NOT to install this firmware update, remember the trick you will have to do before you can install the next map update. rolleyes

DorkusNimrod wrote:

Right-click on the file named GarminDevice.xml on the nuvi drive located in x:/Garmin and select "Open With" and choose Notepad. Look for the following line approx 6 lines down from the top:

< SoftwareVersion >320< /SoftwareVersion >

The current software version on the unit is listed here. Mine says 320 but yours will be likely be 230 since you stated that your unit came with that version. Change the 230 (or whatever other version number it is) to 420 (this is the current Garmin version available). Make no other changes.

*Note that I had to add spaces in the example line above so the forum would not interpret the line as valid html code. Don't add the spaces that I added above.

After doing so, save the file (file/save). Don't unplug or power off the unit...keep it connected to the PC.

Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process into thinking that the most current software verison is already installed on the unit. After the nuvi is power cycled & GarminDevice.xml is regenerated, the software version listed in the file will again list the older version that is currently on the unit.

The map update will always want to force you to have the latest device firmware, first! crying

I did it -- things still work.

I had to do a stinkload of other updates on my 680, so I went ahead and did this one as well.

My 680 still works. Nothing different noticed.

I'm still waiting for the button that says "avoid all this traffic and get me home quick" but I guess they're still debugging that one.

Happy holidays--

updates

Dont you think if you go to the Garmin dashboard and it will force you to update but if you go to the webupdater then you will have a choice to update or not to update. ORrrrrr if you do a map update when the next one comes due that it will update all of the missing updates.

thanks for the info

thanks for the info

thanks

The good news is Garmin is not a Microsoft company. Garmin appers to do a great job debugging fixes and software.

680 Update

Downloaded and installed with no problems - and unit works fine.

There are those who actually praise companies like Microsoft or Garmin for putting out constant bug fixes.

You sound like you're in my group of thinkers; preferring that the products are tested and bug free BEFORE they are put on the market. What a concept! wink

Unfortunately, this type of thinking seems to be losing popularity these days.

By The Way...

It's a little less than a boatload of crap, but definitely more than you can carry in a wheelbarrow.

6xx Update

I have updated two 680's and have no problems whatsoever.

Version 4.80 and MSN Direct Traffic Issue

Upgrading to V 4.80 has caused my Nuvi 680 to no longer draw color status lines ( red, yellow, green) on traffic map. What to do?

.

Contact Garmin. In the process of "fixing" some things, Garmin very often breaks other things. And I'll bet if you contact Garmin and report it, they will reply with "I have never heard of this issue" and will have you do a hard reset.

Regardless, you can try the hard reset here:

This is exactly the kind of quirky operational changes I am interested in hearing about before I update my 660.

Bought my 680 back in 2007

Bought my 680 back in 2007 and it has been perfect since day one.

Just downloaded the latest firmware update and all is well. I have nothing but 100% service and satisfaction from Garmin.

I find that registering on the "my garmin" area of their site is the best way to get firmware and map updates (vesus using the older "web-updater" system.

I have no problems with companies putting out "upgrades and bug fixes" along the way... I am impressed that Garmin still supports this older model... but I guess that is what makes their products so good.

Personally, I upgrade/update (or at least check) every 60 days or so. If nothing else, I am updating the POI files I download from this site... so I am connected to my computer anyways.

Way to go Garmin!!!!

Thanks,
