Is turning off my gps always to be done by sliding the switch to the left or to lock to the right?

Slide the switch to the left

Slide the switch to the left to turn it on. Slide the switch to the left again to turn it off.

I should clarify when it is plugged in of only results in continuing to charge but sliding to right locks it if I unplug the unit with switch to left does the unit shut off completely?

Unplugging the unit, and sliding the switch to the left will turn the unit off. If it is mounted in the cradle, and plugged in to the lighter, it will only sleep.

Let's see if this helps

If off, sliding the switch to the left turns the device on.
If on, sliding the switch to the left turn the device off.
Think of it as a push on - push off button in a slider form. If plugged into a live lighter socket, it will continue to charge off the vehicle power... It acts like it is in standby mode.

If Off, sliding the switch to the right does nothing other than maybe reducing the chance of accidentally turning it on.

If On, sliding the switch to the right "locks" the touch screen... This feature is probably most useful in hand-held operation when it is running on its internal battery and being handled as in putting in and taking out of a pocket. When the screen is locked, the touch buttons are disabled preventing accidental selection. Also the screen brightness is reduced to minimal after 30 seconds (at least on the 750) to conserve battery time. Touching the screen once dimmed returns the brightness for 30 seconds so you can check your position or whatever screen you were on when you on when you locked it. It then goes back to dim. To unlock, slide the switch to the center position. This works whether solo on its internal battery, or if connected to vehicle power.

As a personal preference, I find this useful when driving at night. The screen can be dimmed so it is not distracting and only needs a tap to look at the map. Routing functions including voice directions continue to work when locked.
