Tried looking...can't find the info on the 465t

Hi everyone.....I was looking at purchasing another Garmin unit.......the one that interests me is the Nuvi 465T (truck model)
Now I am aware that it is for truck but it can also be used for cars. It gives you the option for trucks as an over the road OTR driver or a delivery truck. The delivery truck is what I need the info on.
I assume that I would still need to input all of my trucks dimensions & whatnot.....but does it actually route you like a delivery truck? What I mean is that I drive a box truck & I really have to worry about the viaducts around Chicago. Most are marked so I never had a problem....but there not all marked which posses a slight problem. I still stop & double check....but I just need to know if this unit is actually good for local deliveries.
I also read that the unit will pop up a window with a message saying a low viaduct is ahead....to avoid....or the street that your on is not a designated truck route....if you click the warning off (or does it turn off by itself?) does it keep trying to reroute you around said warning or does it keep you directed the way your already traveling? Alot of times I have to go on streets that I know I am overweight on. I just don't want to be arguing with my GPS the whole day. I know I could probably tweek the input...but I just need to know & the "experts" at Best Buy don't have a clue to any of my questions.....

So is it a good unit for just local box truck deliveries & for car as well? I will not be using this for over the road driving at all.

Thank you to all that can help me out.

Happy New Year to all! Be safe!

I own a 465T

It's great for me so far.
But I'm an OTR driver.
The NTTS POI's that come pre-installed are all put useless to me, but I suppose they'd be good for an O/O... :-?

After setting up your vehicles dimensions and gross weight, etc, the device will do a good job of routing down roads that it thinks your vehicle can go down based on said info.
That said, it's not a substitute for your own common sense and knowledge of the area. You still need to pay attention to signs.

I've heard some drivers say that the 465T doesn't really account for vehicle length. They claimed to have set the length to 100' and STILL got routed down an average two lane (one lane in either direction) road.
Not really an issue for a straight truck I'd imagine.

As found on Garmin's website, if you key in that your vehicle is 15' 0", the 465T WILL try and route you under a 15' 1" clearance!

It seems to do a good job of alerting you to "questionable truck routes" as well. It does this with a tone and an icon on screen. At least, that's been my experience when running my 53' rear-end around downtown San Francisco, Tacoma, Minneapolis, etc, etc...

I'd suggest that you create a POI from the clearance information at the following link: http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalDeptCateg...

Armed with the DOT clearance info, the Extra POI Editor software (search this site for it) created by resident programing whiz turboccc, and Garmin's POI Loader software, you can easily set up proximity alerts to sound at a user defined distance from a hazard (POI).

If I were in your shoes, I'd weigh the pros and cons of the 465T vs a cheaper model in the Nuvi series.

With the 465T, you're basically paying for the NTTS, Bluetooth and built-in FM Traffic Receiver (with lifetime access included). You're also paying for the ability to key in vehicle dimensions, but I'm not going to put too much faith in it's ability/accuracy. I mean, don't just follow the thing blindly expecting it to keep you out of trouble, ya know? If you can get by with just the local POI data, by all means, save yourself some money and load the file onto a cheaper unit. If yo want the added piece of mind that comes with the GPS routing you (MOSTLY) down truck routes that it know exist, then grab the 465T. It's a darn good unit, and the BEST "trucking GPS" on the market at this point in time...

Lastly, if you do end up creating that POI, why not contact whomever is maintaining this file: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2002 with your data? I'm sure it'd be a welcome addition.

Well, I think I've rambled on enough.
I hope this helps you...

As you are near/in chicago

Stop by the Garmin store on N Michigan. You may luck out and get someone who can actually answer your questions.

That's probably best...
If not in person, just call Garmin. They've got great CS.

Again, as I (more or less) said in my post, the unit has done right by me so far...

It's kept me legal thus far with the data I've fed it...

Thank you for your input.

Thank you for your input. I've been using various Garmin units through the past bunch of years & I am currently using a StreetPilot C550 & as of recently, my Nuvi 1690. But the 1690 has been a bit of a hassle lately with it freezing up & other minor issues. I have updated it once again tonight & I will be putting it through it's final testing this weekend. If it gives me any additional grief....I already have a return authorization # & a shipping label awaiting it to go back. So.....I can either just keep using my C550 or get something else.......

My internal battery died on the C550 which I am fixing with a new battery off of E-Bay.....so if that does the trick....good for me.
Otherwise....I just might give the 465T a try.
Thanks again to everyone!
