Nuvi 765t refurbished, Christmas present does not boot completely - no map!!

I purchased 2 Nuvi's 765t's. For Christmas presents, factory refurbished about 3 months ago. I tried to register and update map on one of them Christmas day. It had already been registered by someone else March 21, 2009. So I could not download a Map. I tried to up date firmware, but could not get a complete update. It would not boot to menu after installation. I can now get it to boot somewhat(slow and only sometimes) but there is no Map installed on the unit, and it locks up. Is there any secret reset to this thing? I am getting nowhere.
Thanks

Call garmin

Call Garmin on the one that you can't register. Be prepared to fax the receipt to show where and when you bought it from an authorized dealer.

Hmmm . . .

If you may have bought the units from a non-authrorized vendor and if it was up to me, I'd probably take the position that I am a newbee who received the device(s) as a christmas present and that I don't have the bill, if asked - Unless, of course the unit is clearly identified as a refurb (in the old days was simply a tiny sticker on the back of the box, making it less than obvious) and I'd feign surprise when/if the support drone tells you it is used.

Note that it is also possible that the unit wasn't refurbed by Garmin - in which case you are subject to the gods of luck in dealing with the comnpany.

Good luck

Refurb or just used?

When Garmin refurbs an GPS I believe it's sent out with a new serial number and no previous owner info. What you may have purchased is simply a 'used' unit, not refurbed.

As long as you have a reciept and the previous owner will vouch for the fact the unit wasn't stolen Garmin will probably adjust the registration information for you (don't expect new maps though).

To hard reset your 765 (to try and get functionality back) try touching the lower right portion of the screen while turning the unit on. You'll be asked if you want to reset user settings. Answer yes. That won't help with your registration issue but 'might' bring the GPS back to a normal state so it's at least functional.

Cheers

not always

I had to send my unit back to Garmin and they sent a refurb in return. The unit did register - as a REFURBIHED UNIT and showed the original in service date. I still got my free map update, but then this was a warranty exchange.

Nuvi 765t refurbished

Thanks for the response and suggestions..That is more than I can get from "New Egg". That is the place from which they were purchased. I would have to question their "refurb advertising". It was never Refurbished, still had the original owners name and registration date in it. I believe that it may be less than honest. Since the purchase is over 30 days they want to wash their hands of it. It wasn't my fault that I trusted them and saved it for a Christmas present. "Catch me once, Shame on you. Catch me twice, Shame on me". I don't believe that I will give them another chance.

Still, call Garmin

I would still spend the time on hold to speak with Garmin. You have the receipt that shows you bought it from an authorized reseller that didn't send you what you paid for and now refuse to make good on their sale. You may get a sympathetic ear - and again, you may not.

Ask for an exchange

I have always had good luck with NewEgg. Try asking for an exchange.

ask or exchange on Nuvi 765

I would like an exchange.....they state no refund or exchange after 30 days. These were purchased in September (because of the sale price) for Christmas gifts. The boxes were not opened since they were for Christmas. I'm afraid I "trusted" them when they said that they had been refurbished. They must have done it themselves. I don't believe that I will "trust" them again.

I believe what you bought were open box/recertified items. Here is there policy on these..Note that they say to try the item immediately after receipt. Personally I would never buy used items no matter how much less they are...I am sure many are good but I know there are many that are bad as you have found out and then the problems start.

What is an Open Box item?
Open Box items have been opened and touched and/or returned. Because they originate from different situations, they may or may not include accessories, documentation or retail packaging. Refurbishment is done by the manufacturer. Open Box products are warranted for only 30 days. We recommend that you try out your Open Box product immediately after receiving it.

Tough situation

Purchased in September? That puts everything in a different light.

I wouldn't even buy something NEW in September for use as a Christmas gift, if it only had a warranty of 30-90 days. The factory warranty is 25% expired before the recipient gets it, too.

I think it is unrealistic to expect NewEgg to exchange this after so long, especially if it was advertised as having a limited exchange period. It's even beyond Garmin's map guarantee for new units, too.

You could try explaining your situation to Garmin and hope that they might accomodate you with a free map. I asked Garmin to send me MapSource with the same map that I already had, and they sent it for free; I only had to pay shipping. Seems reasonable to me that they could do something like that for you. That's all that seems wrong here, and it would correct your situation.

nuvi765 doesn't boot

I contacted Garmin today... I was on hold for 41 minutes the first time and got disconnected. I tried again about 30 later..this time I was on hold for 1 hour 3 minutes and someone finally answered. I received a RMA. No questions asked. The unit should not be freezing up during the boot. They were very nice and I managed to calm down. By the way.. it wasn't the 800 number. I used magicjack, thinking the toll line would be faster. Who knows!
I believe that Garmin update starts from the time the unit is registered, not sold.

Glad it worked out

They like to use the registration date and often refer to the "first satellite lock" date as well, in determining eligibility. In your situation, you would not have been able to tell if the previous person had registered or locked satellites or not before it was returned.

I'm glad it worked out for you.

Garmin Busy

Glad it all worked out OK. Your long wait time is almost certainly due to the time of year, they most probably have only a skeleton work force “in the office” over the Christmas period.
The 60 day clock starts ticking from the first satellite lock so unless everyone who unwraps a new GPS on Christmas Day has great will power, they must download the new map update before the end of February. As they say, use it or lose it.
I guess if they are sending you a refurbished unit it will have the latest maps already installed but you should still have the 60 day update period which will put you into March which is when the next update is due.

Newegg

Margee, I am glad Garmin support came through for you, but I am disappointed in the response you got from Newegg. I have purchased from Newegg many times and have always had a positive experience. I have also recommended Newegg to many friends and relatives. Based on your experience with them I may need to rethink that. I think Newegg should have helped you out in this situation ... open box policy or not.

Yes I could tell. It had been registered on March 29th, 2009. The name of the individual was still there and it stated that it was that person that registered the unit. That showed up in "my dashboard"
