Can someone share sample CSV file? Can Proximity be added by POI rather than by entire file?

Thanks for reading my query.

First of all, is it correct that the "Proximity Field" in Mapsource 6.15.6 does NOT work on my Garmin 885T? Garmin tech support says it does NOT but it took the guy 15 minutes to find out...and so I have little faith that he actually had any firsthand knowledge.

Assuming that it does NOT work, I need to set proximity alerts for my custom POIs. Yes, I know I can do that on a file-wide basis with POI Loader in manual mode. But, I was wondering whether it was possible to set proximity alerts for each POI individually inside the file so I can customize things a little more. I know that you can set individual speed alerts using, for example, "School Zone@35" in a line. Is there a comparable command for proximity?

Thanks very much for helping me.

Download Extra POI Editor

Download the Extra POI Editor and convert your CSV to GPX. You can then set a proximity distance for each POI.

EPE can be downloaded from http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor.

Be certain to scroll down and read the information as you will get an error trying to run the file if you don't. Grab the help file as well.

Mapsource will work for your

Mapsource will work for your unit. You can not build a proximity alert distance into a csv file.Mapsource will not open a csv file.It will for a gpx file and that is what you need to have a proximity built in.You can convert the csv file to gpx and edit in Mapsource. To me it would be a lot easier to just download Extra Poi Editor and load your csv files to it.Double click on the custom poi you want to edit and add in ft the proximity you want. Then save as a gpx file and load to your gps. Here is the process.

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and build the distance in for the alert. When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download. Once installation is completed you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to build the distance alerts for. Double click the individual custom poi you want to edit and put distance in ft for proximity then click OK.

If you want to set proximity for every custom poi in the file go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance in feet you want for the alert. Then click replace all. You now have distance set for each custom poi. Then save as a gpx file. You will lose the built in alert if you save as a csv file. The nice thing about this method is that you can use express mode for poiloader.

The "Proximity" field works just fine - it's MapSource that is crippled.

Download Extra POI Editor or GeePeeEx Editor and set up your POI's using GPX files. One of the advantages of using GPX files is that each individual POI can have it's own speed or proximity setting. And you can then use Express Mode with POILoader to load them without having to use the tedious Manual Mode.

This works fine with my 350 and 760. There are some funky differences between various Garmin units and I cannot guarantee that this will work for your 885T. But it SHOULD.

Here is the way I do it

I explain it in detail on my site:

sites.google.com/site/lschwabe/

The just of it is that I extended the format of the csv file to include proximity, and then I do a simple and quick conversion to gpx, which is what I load. It is working very well for me. End result is a very easy way to have proximity at the POI level with the convenience of csv files.

Check it out!

Good Alerts FAQs

There are several excellent FAQs on alerts here.
Alerts in general:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764
and
Directional csv alerts:

I don't think there is a csv command string comparable to the @xx speed alert for proximity though. You'll have to use some of the other methods mentioned like Tour Guides... or better yet use gpx for your POIs.
