Download Manager

I am attempting to download my one time free map update. I connected the GPS and am downloading the 2 GB file through download manager. However, it is taking forever. I need to use my GPS (because I am on vacation driving around--and didn't have time to download before I left) once the download manager is downloading the file to the hard drive on my laptop can I disconnect the GPS or will it screw everything up if I disconnect the GPS unit from the computer at this time. I already had to get the download manager to reconnect once before so I really don't want to start over.

I guess that it doesn't seem like the GPS is a part of this particular section of the process so I didn't think that it would matter, but I don't want to screw anything up again.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can

Yes, you can down load the map to computer and update it later. I, my self had problem with down loading. It took me 3 times to got it on my computer.

I ordered the disc

I tried to download the update twice: once with my aircard and once using wi-fi. Completed the download both times but it wouldn't install. Out of frustration, I ordered the update disc for $10.00 and used it.

Download

Had no problem downloading and installing the update.

Cheers

After the download it takes

After the download it takes awhile for the computer or whatever to unzip it. You don't even know whats going on. i only found this out after i left the computer for about a half an hour

Did Garmin give me a Gift or did I screw up?

I didn't either (new 765T)....I think. I did it during the product registration process. It did take a bit of time to install and it appeared successful. My new Garmin still works.

About 4 hours later, I received an email from Garmin thanking me for ordering my one-time map update, gave me a hotlink to my download and a Product Key.

I didn't have to use a product key the first time. Did I just download and install software updates the first time or did Garmin give me an extra free map update?

I don't want to click on if I can use it next year. Any thoughts?

I don't know where I'm going or remember where I've been...without Garmin.

Updates

You won't be able to "use it next year" in any case. Map downloads have an expiration date. You can check your map version on the nuvi with Tools - Settings - Map - Map Info. It should be at 2010.30 if the upgrade completed.

I have never had to enter the product key either on my 755T. I don't know why Garmin gives you that information. Maybe it is requred on other units.

Note that maps are not updated via Webupdater or My Dashboard. Those utilities are for firmware, voice and other software updates. Maps are updated through your My Garmin logon.
