Nuvi 265WT Dies on First Use

I've just purchased the 265WT; I've updated the firmware, but haven't registered it yet, because I wanted to try it out first.

I plugged the cord into the car's lighter receptacle, installed the unit into the friction pad mount, and set out on a trip to a nearby city, a distance of about 60 miles.

The unit performed fine for about 40 miles, and then simply switched off; I could not turn it back on.

I noticed that the back of the unit felt quite warm, and wondered whether this was normal, and whether it should not have been plugged in for so long. Shouldn't it remain plugged it as long as it's being used?

All attempts to turn it on have failed; I fear I have a defective unit, and will have to return it to Amazon.

Is it possible I may have done something wrong, or failed to do something I should have before use?

how long did you charge it?

Sometimes the battery can be so low it can take some time to power on.

Is it made in a slave labor factory in China ?

I charged it until the battery status showed full; maybe about 2 hours, I'm not sure.

I guess it's your luck, call Garmin & ask for help. If they don't want to repair it....

Tell Amazon that's it's DOA. You would like to get replacement.

Good Luck.

I can vouch that this advice worked handsomely for me a month ago. I did spend a long time on the phone with Garmin (mine was not so thoroughly dead as yours, so it took longer for them to decide it was not revivable). Then I used the Amazon web site account feature, and got very speedy and remarkably generous response.

I didn't bother with going through Garmin. Since the unit was only delivered about 5 days ago, I simply pulled up Amazon's returns page and reported the unit as defective. I filled out the simple form, gave my original order number, and downloaded an RMA label. They don't give replacements for this item, only refunds. I sent the original back and at the same time ordered a new one(same model). New one arrives tomorrow--can't beat Amazon Prime, next day delivery for $3.99!
