newbie question-radar detectors & speed cameras

Does anyone know if there is a radar detector that works on speed and or traffic light cameras?

There are several but I give

thanks

thanks I did not know Cobra made 1 too

Costco Has A New Cobra Model

Check out costco.com under the what's new tab. They just listed a Cobra SL3 for $74.99. Have not seen this one yet and don't know anything about it other than it uses a subscription based service. The Passport is supposed to be good. Whichever you choose, it needs to have GPS since the fixed cameras are tripped by your vehicle passing over the ground induction loops in the pavement and not by actual radar. There is nothing for a normal radar detector to detect in those cases. The mobile photo radar vans do use radar so your detector should alert as long as it detects the same radar band that the mobile camera is using.

Radar detectors

Why would you need a radar detector that does all that when you have a GPS that does the same thing ?

My $.02

My guess is that since you posted on this forum, you probably have a GPS unit. If that is the case, I don't understand why you wouldn't just load up the Red-Light/Speed Camera POI database and spend your money on a better radar detector.

Most of the multitasking radar detectors are going to be mediocre at performing their primary duty - detecting radar (and laser). The only exception might be a high-end Escort or Beltronics model.

If you are wanting outstanding radar detection and the absolute best laser detection, then just shell out the $400 and buy a Valentine One. I did and I love it. Between my GPS warning me of Red-Light/Speed cameras and my V1 pulling radar/laser detection duties, driving is much more of a pleasure.

radar detector

I live in an area with red light and speed cameras. I wasn't sure if you could tell exactly where the speed camera picks you up 7 where you get out of range. The one town nearby-Bluff City TN-is always having budget problems & I don't really trust them. I try to avoid this area when I can, but I wasn't sure how far away you have to be to be out of range. I just wondered if a radar decector might help. Thanks

Bluff City TN uses embedded sensors in the road.

Most if the ones in the DC/MD area use the sensors embedded in the ground which are not detectable by RADAR detectors b/c they are not using RADAR.

Red Light Cameras

Is there a way that when I get near a Camera the GPS will alert me with a audio alert?

I have a Garmin 855

Thanks!

Yes

Yes, as far as I know, you should be able to on your model. Obviously, you'll need to load the data, first. Once you have that done, you should get alerts. There are several threads with instructions on how to get the data and load it onto your GPS unit.

thats what i need ...an alert
