Did you uncheck City Nav?

Let's be optimistic and assume the map is there.

To be able to see it on your nuvi, you first need to uncheck City Navigator. Go to Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info and see what maps are listed. Is your new SD-card map there? If so, great. But to view it, you need to uncheck City Navigator. When returning to City Nav., go back and recheck City Nav and uncheck your SD-card map.

It works for me with Topo USA and the free Arizona Topo that I have installed on SD cards.

City Navigator has priority over other maps apparently and will not let the others be viewed on your nuvi until it's deselected.

Report back if this isn't your issue. Good luck.

additional maps

i was given a map for work purposes. i use both the city navigator as well as this map. this additional has a lot of data on it like streams ponds legal land markers. i have had no trouble with both being on. the fellow who gave me this had to do the swtich. i have a nuvi255w.

Your problem

Your problem maybe that the file name MUST be GMAPSUPP.IMG and not mapsupp.img.

Your Problem

I believe the gmapsupp.img must reside in a directory named garmin on your sd card.

Here's the process we used

to put 2008 maps on an SD card before we upgraded to the 2009 maps --

Make a copy of your current GMAPPROM.IMG (containing the V2008 maps in our example), as GMAPSUPP.IMG on the SD card.

Create a file called GMAPSUPP.UNL on the card using notepad and enter the 25 digit unlock code for the V2008 maps (omitting any dashes). If you currently have a GMAPPROM.UNL on the Nüvi, you can just copy/rename that.

When you've done your upgrade, if you go to the MAP>Info screen, with the card inserted, you should see both versions in the list of maps.

Make sure that only one of them is selected at a time! This worked for us on our 260, hope it works for you.

Ok

OK

As others have said, the map on the SD card must be named gmapsupp.img (not mapsupp.img) and it needs to be in a directory named garmin on the SD card. Can you confirm that your SD card has a garmin subdirectory and that the map is there and is called gmapsupp.img?

Is there any chance that your copy of the map is corrupted or not Garmin-compatible. Have others gotten the map to work on a SD card in a nuvi? If so, can you borrow their card and try it in your nuvi?

what i have on the sd card

what i have on the sd card is a copy of the whole garmin folder from my nuvi 260. i renamed the gmapprom to gmappsup. if i put the sd im my 755t it will read it, but in the 260w nothing happens. the reason im trying to put it on a sd is because the img file is too big for the nuvi 260w. the maps are already unlocked, so do i still need the 25 diget lock code?

Are you saying

Are you saying your attempting to use the same maps in both the 755T and the 260W? If so that could be your problem as the map file can only be unlocked on a SINGLE device. So you probably can't swap them between the 2 units.

Sounds like they are unlocked for the 755T so they won't work on the 260W.

originaly i had the whole

originaly i had the whole garmin file on the sd card, just like it is on the internal gps. Well I didnt know you dont need the whole file. I made a garmin folder and put the gmaprom file in it, then changed the file name to gmapsupp.img my next mission is to figure out how to load different basemaps. do they even update those? i noticed the 260w has more detail than my new 755t..whats up with that?

Don't blame the map...

jeffpope0 wrote:

It's not the map's fault. All *detailed* maps (City Navigator) have the exact same amount of detail built into them (base maps are the very low-detailed basic maps that you see when zoomed out 100's of miles).

Garmin has been on a trend to reduce map detail on all newer units, beginning with the 7x5 series. They like to refer to what they believe is extraneous map detail as "clutter". The amount of displayed "clutter" on the map should be the user's decision, not forced upon all users just because Garmin feels users should not be looking at a "cluttered" map screen.

My meager nuvi 250 (and even a previous "bottom-end" nuvi 200) actually shows more map detail than my "top-of-the-line" nuvi 765...go figure. rolleyes

No. You can't update the actual basemap. There is a worldwide basemap on Garmin's website that you can load, however. But it won't make much difference. Better to load additional detail maps. There are lots of free ones available in addition to Garmin's purchased maps.

No sure what you mean. An adapter from what to what? The nuvi uses mini USB, doesn't it?
