Replacing Battery in Nuvi

Has anyone opened the case of their Nuvi series? I am wondering about battery replacement. It seems this could be done if instructions were available. This series has been out long enough now that soon a battery is going to go dead.

I replaced the battery on my 765. Very easy to do.

replacing the battery in my Nuvi 680 na

When my battery failed I did a Google search for a replacement battery. I was able to purchase a kit which included the battery, a small torx screw driver, a plastic tool to pry the case and instructions for $25. It took me about half an hour because the parts are small and spring loaded. The replacement battery charges faster and has greater capacity.

This is not a simple open the case and pop in the replacement. However, if you are handy and can work with small parts I can testify that the job can be done sucessfully. I located this article which reveals all in detail.

That's funny. But it does often seem the info we get depend on who answers the customer service line.

765t

I have a 765t. I don't need a battery yet but I am sure that day will come. I am afraid to put the battery in myself b/c I would hate to break it. Even though I have had it a few years, I really like the 765t and can't see any replacement I would be as happy with.

Replacing Battery Nuvi 750

I replaced the battery in my Nuvi 750. Bought the battery from BatteryShip - Cheyenne, WY 8/23/2010 Arrived in the mail on 8/25/2010 with new battery and a little tool kit with instruction. I also found a video on YouTube with someone installing the battery in the 750.
Very simple to do, it's a plug in connecter to the battery, just watch the gasket when reinstalling the back.
COST Total $20.95.
The same day after I installed the battery I went to Garmin web sight to check for new updates. The battery came up as a recall, that it might cause fire. I had never seen that before. So I called BatteryShip and was told that recall was just posted by Garmin, that the new battery from them was of good quality and met all of Garmin specifications.
It's been working good for two year now and still holds a charge, but every time I go to MyGarmin.com the free recall appears. No need to send the Nuvi 750 back, so I click Cancel.

Replacing Battery in Nuvi

From what I read I can not replace the battery on my NUVI 465T. What are my options ? Thanks..

Read this on Garmin website..

04/10/2011

If the nuvi is not holding the expected battery life then there may be a couple things that could be causing this. Below is a list of situations that could cause the battery to discharge quicker along with ways to extend the battery life.

Reason for faster discharge:
1.Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight

2.Prolonged exposure to excessive heat

To maximize battery life of your nuvi, try some of the following procedures:

1.Adjust the brightness to a dimmer setting
2.Change backlight setting
3.Disable Bluetooth, if so equipped, when not in use
4.Limit the use of Extra Features such as: Audible Books, Bluetooth, or MP3s while using the internal battery
5.Turn GPS Receiver OFF when not in use
6.Use the Vehicle Power Cable when possible

After adjusting the settings the battery life should be longer.

In some cases the battery icon may need to be recalibrated to accurately display the battery life. There are a couple ways to charge the device. It can be charged from the Vehicle Power Cable, USB (optional accessory with some devices), and AC Charger (optional accessory). USB cables and AC chargers may be purchased from our website at the following link: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/

To increase accuracy of the battery life:
1.Fully discharge the battery
2.Connect the device to any power source listed above
3.Allow to charge for 4 - 5 hours1
4.Do not remove from the power source until fully charged

The battery icon should now reflect a more accurate indication of the battery life.

1When connected via USB, a device will charge considerably slower than when connected to either AC or 12-volt power. A full charge via USB may take as long as 8-12 hours.

Sure you can

replace your battery on a nuvi 465T for less than $20 including the price of a toolkit to disassemble the case. Just go to eBay and put "nuvi 465t battery" in the search field. You will get many options for buying the battery and toolkit.

I have replaced the battery in several models of nuvi's (although not a 465T). It takes about 15 minutes and is quite easy if you take your time and are careful.

Replacing Battery In Garmin Nuvi 350

I am starting to notice that the battery in my Garmin Nuvi 350 has pretty short lifespan. After reading through these posts, I am inclined to contact Batteries Plus to see if the replacement is still $32. If the battery cost $20, but another $12 will get in installed by a place that (hopefully) has the experience and tools to do it properly, I might just have them do it. I suppose I could contact Garmin, but I recall reading that they just swap out a re-furbished GPS, so that might not be a viable option for me.

Has anybody here tried Batteries Plus for a Garmin Nuvi recently?

I did complete the Garmin form online and it indicates that the Garmin Nuvi 350 is still under warranty! I did just register it this summer and received a map update, but could it really still be under warranty?

When

When did you purchase the Nuvi 350 and did you purchase it new? If you bought it new within the last year then it could still be under warranty although it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a long time. The
350 has been discontinued for many years now.

If you need a new battery you may want to check out these guys. You'll get the battery and the tools needed to open the device, and a video to help you do the replacement job yourself, all for $24.95:

just glad my 855 has a removable battery. Most of the time, I use the unit without the battery installed. Batteries are only good for so many recharges, but keeping the battery out of the unit, and installing only when needed, I save the recharges and the battery last a very long time. I do the same with my laptop.

Replacing Battery In Nuvi

I did receive this email from them today. It is interesting that they replace the unit itself, rather than jusr the battery. I guess $25 for just the battery vs. $49.00 for an exchange unit is an easy decision for me. I also checked the warranty police, which states:

"Repairs have a 90 day warranty. If the unit sent in is still under its original warranty, then the new warranty is 90 days or to the end of the original one year warranty, depending upon which is longer."

"Dear J,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The repair rate of a nuvi 350 is $49.00. The unit will be exchanged for another unit. If you would like to set this us please call us at 1-800-800-1020 and we will be able to assist you.

Replacing Battery In Garmin Nuvi 350

Well, it has been sort of interesting. After posting this, my Garmin Nuvi 350 battery seems to be working fine. However, knowing how old the unit is, I don't want to get a false sense of security. I am thinking of topping off the battery and seeing how long it lasts. Does anybody know how long it should work on battery power alone? I suppose it will depend, too, if I am actually navigating with it. If I just leae it ON, but not navigating should the battery last a couple of hours?

For what it's worth, it's

For what it's worth, it's not good to fully discharge lithium ion batteries, and you'll get the maximum service life from them if you recharge when half depleted or less. Plenty of RC hobby and e-cigarette info on the web about it.

By the way, if there are any smokers left, e-cigs DO work and it's not nicotine that kills you, it's the other stuff in tobacco smoke. Well worth trying e-cigs if you're thinking of quitting. I kicked my 45+ year tobacco habit with them when nothing else worked. (sorry to go off topic, but I'm a zealot now!)

Replacing Battery In Garmin Nuvi 350

I did some further testing this evening and it looks like if I have a fully charged battery I get about 20 minutes before the Garmin Nuvi 350 shuts down!

Jim, I think you should get somewhere around 2 to 3 hours on a charge. My 750 does that with a new battery. Of course the run-time drops as the battery ages.

No problem

I replace a battery in a Garmin 350 no problem. Cost $10 from Ebay. Tools cost $5.00.

It's worth the try. When my kitchen aplliances don't work anymore they go to the garbage and buy a new one because the Tech charges too much for repairs.

Great thread

I never knew replacing the Garmin battery was even possible for the consumer. Looking at a video, it looks easy enough.

Garmin Nuvi 350 Exchange

I just shipped my Garmin Nuvi 350 off to the "Garmin Hospital" this afternoon. I took some time this weekend charging it and seeing how long it would go and it averaged about 20 minutes after it was fully charged. To me it will be worth the $49.00 to get an exchange unit. Once the replacement unit arrives I will add my Favorites and Custom POIs. I may also spring for a Lifetime Map, too!

Garmin Nuvi 350 Refurbished Unit Arrived Today

My refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350 arrived today via UPS. I was pretty impressed by the fast turn around time since I think I just shipped it via the most inexpensive USPS method.

I am downloading map updates now and then off to POI files, delete non-English voices, and perhaps add some custom vehicle icons!

Also, I guess I ought to test the battery to see how long it lasts.

I also noticed that the serial number of the "old" and the "new" are the same. I am just assuming that they assign an ESN (Electronic Serial Number) to the refurbished unit or am I way off base here?

Good Luck

Thanks, POI Factory (Replaced Nuvi 260 battery)

Thanks to all for the info about replacing batteries, and for the confidence to try.

I watched this video from NewPower99.com:

http://www.newpower99.com/Garmin_Nuvi_260_Battery_Replacemen...

Started to order from them, or Amazon, but both wanted shipping, so I tried my local Batteries Plus+, which had in stock their sku GPS10020, for $19.99.

The two case screws are just T5 Torx screws, so I bought a T5 insert at Ace Hardware for $1.79, and used in with a nutdriver.

I used a gasket scraper to carefully pry the case apart. After that, it's all downhill.

The three small screws holding circuit board are just small phillips, so used jewelers screwdrivers.

The replacement fits perfectly, and works great.

It would be best to buy the kit from NewPower99 (Amazon sells the same kit) because it has the tools, but this worked for me. I probably spent 15 minutes doing this.

Thanks again.

when to change battery

How do you know when it is time to change the battery. I have had my Nuvi for about 2.5 years. The charge holds about 30 minutes. Should I change the battery or wait? Thanks.

I have been running my Nuvi

I have been running my Nuvi 660 with a pretty much dead battery for quite a while now (lasts about a minute or two). Works fine as long as it's plugged in. If you don't need it to work without the power cord attached it really doesn't matter. From an operational standpoint it's totally up to you, but it's relatively easy to replace the battery.

Not sure about being able to install firmware updates with a dead battery. It usually needs to be disconnected from the computer to reboot after the firmware download and then it needs to write the new firmware into flash memory while on battery (hence the recommendation to update with a fully charged battery). If it dies during an update write to flash memory, it would likely brick the unit.

I agree -

Replace that tired old battery. There may end up being some corrosion in the unit if the batteries start to oxidize from being dead.

Firmware upgrades are another reason for replacing the battery. You're getting good advice to replace. I used batteryship like others have recommended.

Where could I get good

Where could I get good replacement batteries?

Batteries Plus Nuvi battery replacement

Batteries Plus replaced my Garmin Nuvi 760 Battery that was 3 years old. I had the screws out and they put the new battery in and put the cover back on. I paid $19.99 and it came with tools. It is guaranteed a year.

The new battery they sell is a Ray o Vac. I have had it a couple weeks and in one hour unplugged the charge goes down to the last bar. I tried to take it back today but they close at 8pm and I got there at 8:10.

Replacing Battery In Garmin Nuv 360 Or Garmin Nuvi 360 Exchange?

I now also have a used Garmin Nuvi 360. So far, the battery seems fine, but at some point I may want to consider sending it in if the battery starts to fail. Considering how old the battery is, since the Garmin Nuvi 360 line has been out for a while now, I am just wondering if anybody here has done that lately? If so, is the cost still $49.00? Also, do they still actually just swap out for a refurbished unit rather than actually replacing the battery in my Garmin Nuvi 360? While I am in no real big hurry to do this, at least not until I start noticing issues with the lithium-ion battery, I also don't want to find out in the future that they no longer support the Garmin Nuvi 360 line. Does anybody happen to know how long Garmin typically support their units after they have been discontinued?

D.I.Y.

Video instructions for battery replacement for the 360 series can be found on Youtube, and the battery is available via Amazon.
