Has anyone opened the case of their Nuvi series? I am wondering about battery replacement. It seems this could be done if instructions were available. This series has been out long enough now that soon a battery is going to go dead.

I think so
Does Batteries Plus offer to do the replacement on all Garmin GPS units? Ipods? I thought they only sold batteries -- never been in a store. Great info Cyburt.
Back when the Batteries Pluses first opened, I thought they'd fail in short order. But that was before Target, Wal-Mart and all the others pretty much stopped offering any but the most common battery types. Batteries Plus is now a shop that I think will never fail. My last purchase was replacements for my computer UPS modules--perfect fit, correct terminals and all.
At least for my BP, I see a large work area behind the counter so I do expect that they do a lot of work replacing batteries for customers. I admit that I was also very pleasantly suprised to read that they can and do replace "permanent" nuvi batteries.
Check here or on YouTube

Someone fairly recently posted a link here to a YouTube video of battery replacement--and a link to a supplier of batteries for many nuvis along with the tools to help do the job without marring the outer nuvi surfaces.

I opened mine.

I opened mine with a proper torx screwdriver to remove the screws and a plastic toothpick from a swiss army knife to separate the cases halves by following this video:

also posted above. It was quite easy.
Silly
You can buy a new 750 at Costco.com right now for $199. Garmin must think people are idiots.

Replacing battery on Garmin Nuvi 2xx series - or other Nuvi.
Has anyone opened the case of their Nuvi series? I am wondering about battery replacement. It seems this could be done if instructions were available. This series has been out long enough now that soon a battery is going to go dead.
Battery replacement is pretty easy.
I have both the Nuvi 260 and 260W. To disassemble the case:
- remove the serial number label at the bottom.
- remove the two small torx screws under the serial number label.
- carefully use plastic case removal tools (or plastic hotel room card keys) to start prying open the back case starting at the bottom by the serial number label. work around the sides until the top.
- be careful to keep the two case halves together because the LCD display is attached to the front half but the data ribbon cable is attached to the mainboard which is attached to the back half.
- leave the LCD attached but remove the 3-4 small screws holding the mainboard to the case back.
- remove te battery and speaker cables from the main board.
- use a hotel room key (plastic one of course) or a credit card to slip under the battery (it is attached by two sided tape).
- replace the battery (should use new two sided tape to prevent rattling) and reverse the disassembly procedure to put back together.
- be sure to turn the gps on to check operation before you snap the case halves back together.

I've heard that Batteries Plus can order them for you--and even do the replacement.
Here's another source. Some nuvi 2xx batteries are mentioned on the last of the three Garmin pages. Note that this purchase includes the tools you may need:

Even better for me and others, batteries for the nuvi 750 now exist here--they hadn't earlier:

yup, this would come in handy for some of the older models.

I bought a battery on eBay this past week from someone in HK. I had the battery in about 4 business day, it was $10.
I got the tools from a seller on eBay for around $6.

LOL, well....
My unit came back to life after many attempts at charging. The original battery is fine, my unit is fairly new and I had a hard time believing the battery was already gone. So, the new battery and tools are sitting in the closet.
(I think my unit was still powered on (standby mode) when I've been putting it away and the battery drained way down and it would accept a charge with the A/C adapter.)
I have no doubt I could successfully swap this battery.

Finally ordered a battery
I finally broke down and ordered a battery and a set of little torx drivers and a plastic housing pry tool from eBay.
I used my 760 off the power the other day and, once again, it gave me very little time of use before starting it's "low battery" warnings and then, at a critical time, it shut down.
When I got home I put it on a charger and let it sit overnight. I turned it on and, once it was booted, pressed on the battery strength indicator until the diagnostic screen came up. The battery said 99%. As I watched the screen it dropped to 86%, 84%, 78%......... It fell that far in the first 15 seconds of watching. GAH!
I immediately went to eBay and ordered the battery and tools. I watched the youtube video again and that guy has almost zero dexterity - like me.
Once the stuff arrives I'll post back to let you know how it goes and if it solves my problems.

Replacing Garmin Batteries.
The Garmin 660 looks like the 250/360. Providing this is true and you have the tools and patience this would be the process. 1. Unscrew the back off of the antenna, 2. Slide the slotted black pin at the bottom towards the middle. That side of the antenna will then lift up. Watch for the spring inside the tube like pin you just slid to the center. Be especially careful of the antenna connection that is still attached to the other side. It has some room for retraction but is still connected to the inside. You will now see the two screws at the top of the GPS that you probably never noticed before. Remove them. Carefully separate the two sides of the GPS taking notice that the straps that carry the image to the screen plus the backlight are still connected. You do not want to damage these nor will you necessarily need to disconnect them but you might. The battery pack is now visible. Disconnect it. It is likely was stuck to the case by Garmin with some kind of stick tape or substance but easily comes out of the case. Install you new battery and carefully reverse the procedure. Prior to locking doing the GPS turn it on to insure it works properly, otherwise you will end up repeating this process. Email me at DWestley1218@aol.com and let me know how you've made out. I would be happy to assist you in anyway.
Piece of cake.....
My set of torx drivers arrived a week ago (I needed a T4 which is pretty tiny) but the battery I ordered took a while to arrive. It finally showed up on Saturday. Yesterday, on Sunday, I decided to change the battery in my nüvi 760.
I was heartened by the sheer clumsiness of the guy in the youtube video. I figured if he could do it even someone as clumsy as myself could do it. As it turned out, it was a total piece of cake.
The case came off with ease, the battery and speaker connections do just plug in as shown in the video, etc. The absolute hardest part of the entire operation was getting that stupid sticky piece of stuff off of the old battery to use with the new battery. The whole operation took maybe 10 minutes and that was because I was being really careful and slow.
With my old battery, I would charge the unit completely and then turn it on and check the charge by holding down on the screen over the battery indicator. The diagnostic screen would come up and show a 99% or so charge. Within 30 seconds or so it would indicate maybe 76% or so.
With the new battery the indicator comes up saying 100% and just stays there. Wahoo!!!! I didn't leave it a long time to test but it appears that the new battery actually holds a charge.
If you have been thinking of changing out the battery in your nüvi 760 (or similar model such as the 750) I can assure you that it is REALLY EASY. I'm quite pleased to say the least.

I just did a search on eBay for "cell phone tools" and "phone opening tools". Do a few searches on eBay for items similar to that and for "torx t4" and I'm sure you'll find them. I also searched for "nuvi battery" on eBay and bought the tools and the battery that way.

I'm sooooo happy
I used the nüvi on the battery for almost 2 hours yesterday. Before changing the battery I wouldn't have even gotten one hour out of it. After using it for almost 2 hours I checked the battery strength and it was down to 80%. Excellent!
I listened to my audio book on the way to work this morning (1 hour drive) and, when I arrived at work, I checked the battery strength. It had charged during the drive and was back to 100%. The old battery didn't charge up at all while on the car mount.
I'm so very happy that I went ahead and changed the battery. It was ridiculously easy and it's made such a huge difference.

Heathkit
Well, I suppose I qualify according to the skills you mentioned. I have built a couple of Heathkit color TV's, three Heathkit CB's (GW-10's), and now at the the present time doing clock repair and restoration (Certified). However.........there is noooooo way I would open my 660. BTW, I bet the Heathkit color TV's, and maybe CB's are before a majority of registered users on here's time.
I built a Heathkit color TV (round pic tube), some Heathkit test equipment and a number of Allied Radio receivers and test equipment. I guess that pretty much dates me too!
I guess it's #4

The drivers aren't labelled with their size, but one of them fit my 760 just fine. I doubt very much if your 760 uses different size screws than mine. I don't know if your other models are different.

To all Nuvi 760 owners, have you replaced your batteries
My 2 yr old Nuvi760 has out lived its battery, so after seeing how easy it was on YouTube to replace it, I bought the screw driver & pry tool and a new battery and went to work. All went as shown on Youtube, and the Nuvi actually booted up ok, BUT will not acquire satellites. It was as if it was blinded to sat.
Make a long story short, I called Garmin and they actually gave me an RMA and swapped me a refurb one.
What I want to know now is has anyone done it successfully, and was there an antenna wire or connection that has to be reconnected during the process?

Since I have an 880 and I
Since I have an 880 and I have a removable battery. One of my complaints with Garmin is that all their models should have the ability to replace the battery very easily, but again only a few have that feature. I finally asked Garmin the reason for this, since on many occasions, just by removing the battery has saved me and others from sending the unit back to Garmin, just a old fashioned recycle is usually all is needed to get the unit back in working order. According to Garmin, it has to do with some users carelessness in that moisture gets inside and can damage the components, such as cell phones..

Removable battery.
I agree with you NIckJr that all Nuvi's should have a removable battery. I think the excuse Garmin told you about careless users is lame and insincere at best. The battery issue also annoys me about my 2 year old IPOD which is in need a new battery. I believe the reason Garmin and Apple do this is to convince you to buy a new unit instead of paying the unreasonable price they charge you for battery replacement.

I recall building something just like that with my older bro
FWIW, RDY, a couple of us have had good luck with an eBayer (out of HK) selling replacement batteries for around $US10.50. I just installed it a few days ago. I've done a little endurance testing and it already appears to be superior to the OE battery in my 760 which is only 8 mos. old.

No User Friendly Way to Change the Battery
My Nuvi 660 is about 2 years old. The auto charger stoped working and the battery only holds a charge for 15 minutes or so when charged fully from the computer. Support offered to sell me a power cable for $65 and later told me to get on from $28 to test the theory that the cable is the issue. Next they want me to buy the cradle if the cable is not working. Then, if not then any repairs or battery replacements is $110. This trial and error method is time consuming (weeks will go by)expensive and inconventiant. It is almost like you have to buy a new GPS if you are dependent on using one. This is my 3rd higher end Garmin and the others also died prematurely and it was cheaper to replace than fix. Garmin has some serious customer relations problems that hopefully they will fix soon.

haven't tried it personally, but...
@cm1802: haven't tried it personally, but would be interested to know if you ended up doing this yourself, and what your experience was. If I have to change the battery, I'd love to be able to do it only once. A more powerful battery makes sense to me. I wonder though if doing so would throw off the capacity indicator? I don't know how the nuvi senses the charge level of the battery, but *perhaps* it could get confused if you used a different capacity battery? Honestly, it would be a small price to pay for increased longevity, but still...
