Having issue with computer recognizing gps to be able to upgrade firmware

I have a problem when I try and update my firmware. I have downloaded the update and run it as instructed. I get to the point of hooking up the gps to the usb port. The gps trys to install as a video controller and will not install correctly. When I run the update software the program does not find the gps.

Can anyone give me some insite as to how to correct this problem.

thanks in advance for your help.

What is the make and model of the GPS unit you are trying to update?

i knew i forgot something

magellan maestro 5310
PC with XP Pro
tries to install a vga video controller and a bluetooth device

i have followed the instructions and have not had any luck

and i really appreciate your willingness to help

Did you get any software drivers with it?

I had been using a new Garmin GPS 60CSx for months when the Mapsource application stopped recognizing it whenever I tried to download tracks from the gps to my PC. The only thing that worked from me was to reinstall the device driver from the supplied CD I got when I bought it.

You might want to check to see if you have a device driver from Magellan on disc and/or check their web site.

Good luck!

Suggestion on this problem if still in existence

Hi, haven't been around in a while, but your problem sounded like mine. I had my usb cable plugged into my Dell monitor which has a couple of usb connections on it. It emulates a hub. If you recall the instructions in parens it says (do not use a hub). When I plugged the cable into my direct usb ports on the box it saw it as a removable drive and when I clicked next it worked fine and finished. Hope this helps.
