Magellan POI Editor Won't close

Are any of you who use the Magellan POI editor experiencing this problem. After editing a POI or converting one from a csv file, the program will not close. To resolve I have to ctl alt delete and close the program with Windows Task Manager.

I've only been using it for about 3 weeks now but no problems here. (MM 4000)

What Magellan model do you have (I think there may be a couple of different POI editors floating around) ?? My editor is 4.0.2.0.

What version of Windows??

Does it happen only when the GPS is connected ......or when you run POI edit without the GPS connected??

POI editor

I have 4.1.1.1 with Windows XP and it sucks big time. Plain vanilla with almost no help file. I'm looking for a better one that will work for Magellan. I have a new Maestro 4250. Also, I it will not recognize my GPS when connected so the only way that I can have enhanced POIs is with an SD disk/card.

The Magellan POI tool is all there is; we're stuck with that.

Do you have an SD card slot on the PC? If not, how is the SD card gonna help? You probably should get one anyway 'cause I've heard they are needed for updates and that IS the recommended place to store your user/enhanced/custom POIs anyway.

I've got XP too. It should recognize the MM as a removable external disk drive.......and the SD card as another one, if it is present.

I probably could arrange to get you a copy of my "old" POI editor to see if it would work any better.

I wouldn't hold my breath but Magellan might be able to help with the "not recognized" problem. I think I saw something about a driver but I didn't need it so I didn't pay attention.

Your XP is up to date, isn't it......SP2 ???

Ha, same thing happening to me. I thought it might be might computer (driver conflict) or something, but you are having the same prob......Could be the program, but I don't use it often anyways, but it is annoying.

I have never had that

I have never had that issue...at least not yet. Stupid question though - could it be a lack of RAM? Are you running the program on an older computer?

Ram is fine

I have 2gb ram and the computer is only 1 year old so I don't think that is the problem. I think it is the software. It also won't recognize my Magellan 4250 to transfer POI files.

Ram...

For me, I don't think it's the RAM....I running 4 gb.

It probably could be anything from the drivers or firewall or anti-virus.

Magellan POI Editor Bug

Hi all, I figured it out. I had the same problem. It is a bug.

I'm using Magellan POI File Editor v4.1.1.0. When I 1st started using Magellan POI editor, it can close fine.

If you modified a file and didn't upload to GPS, it prompts you with this dialog box: "You just made changes to one or more POI files stored in your PC without transferring them to your Magellan GPS. Are you sure you want to exit the POI Editor application without transferring these files?"

If you select "Do not show this message again", then POI editor cannot be closed.

To fix this, you need to modify your registry. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! IF YOU SCREW UP YOUR REGISTRY, YOUR WINDOWS WILL NOT WORK.

Delete the following key:

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-188269282-154002978-1881838993-1006\Software\Magellan/POIEdit\Magellan POI File Editor\POIs]
"Warning PC POI"=dword:00000001

(I'm not sure if the numerical path is same on all PC. You might have to search for Magellan folder.)

The warning dialog box will return, but you can now close your POI Editor program without issue.

I only used the Magellan POI Editor for 2 days, and I found couple other nuisances (bugs) in addition to this one. The worst thing is that Magellan website does not offer download of updated POI Editor. I wonder why?

Bug fix worked for me

I had the exact same problem and JIMMYK's fix worked for me. As a precaution though, before I deleted the key I backed up that branch of the registry first.

(For instructions on how to do this in Windows XP, visit:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/registry.htm

and follow "Method 2: Backing up the selected branch of the registry by exporting")

Thanks Jimmy.

Thanks

Thank you soooooo much, this program is the pits but at least now that I know how to close it after modifying a file it is useable.

Other problems also

The bug happens to me as well. Thanks for the fix.

The editor also have some other issues, such as .csv file import can not handle the (")s in excel exported files.

Jimmy,

Thanks for the info on fixing this. I changed the dword from 1 to 0 and it now closes without the warning.

emr

thank you

Mine has been doing the same thing. I have 4.1.1.0 and it wouldn't close after I did anything with POI files. This fix worked for me. I would much rather click the OK box for the "are you sure you want to quit" box than have to ctr+alt+delete every time.

I must confess however. Just now I finally got tired of this happening so in a fit of rage I googled the problem. When I saw the first result I kicked myself and thought "why didn't you look there one of the hundreds of times you have been on the site the past 4 weeks dummy". The first result was this post.

Here's a way that should work without magic user-id numbers

I got a hunch and found the right place under HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of the specific user-id number.

I also experimented by changing the DWORD value to a zero instead of deleting it, and that works, too.

Here's "reg file" you can simply load into your registry to restore the original behavior of asking if you want to exit from the POI Editor:

Save this file as (e.g.) FIX_POI_EDITOR.REG :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Magellan/POIEdit\Magellan POI File Editor\POIs]
"Warning PC POI"=dword:00000000

You can now double-click on that file from an Explorer window, or "execute" it from a command prompt.
