How Far from "My Current Route"

Does anyone know how far off the route will a Garmin show as a POI?

While driving home on I-75, I selected a food POI on my 255W with the Search Near set for "MY CURRENT ROUTE". The restraunt selected did not have the same road name as the exit and when I got off at the exit, I pulled into another that was close.

After getting back onto the expressway, I began to wonder how far off a route will the Garmin GPS show POI's, either those that come with the Garmin and those which have been downloaded from POIFACTORY.

Does anyone know the answer to this question?

My unit

I programmed a 300 mile route on my unit, then chose the BBQ POI. It showed POI's out as far as 100 miles. But then again, there aren't that many BBQ places around me.

On my 780

On my 780 it appears to list POIs from the one nearest my present location to about 60 miles from it.

The thing I find is more important is to make sure I'm not picking one that's behind me as it lists the points by distance and not by the direction of travel.

If you are referring to the built-in database, it's my impression that it doesn't take you more than a mile or so away from your current route.

I can't recall the story with user-loaded POIs, but I've seen some strange things when searching along "my current route" using my own POIs (downloaded from this site).

How far away from the route

I think the question sire1234 was asking was how far off course will a POI show up when asking for one along the route. I just created a couple of test routes and then asked for POI I was familiar with along these routes and all were less than 2 miles off the route. I think there is a specification for this, but I've never seen it. Maybe someone else has an exact answer.

Thanks for the info. I

Thanks for the info.

I should have checked the routing to the restraunt, but I found one close to the exit that was acceptable, and then got back onto the expressway without looking further at the original routing.

I have since thought that I should set up some test routes and look for POI's to see how far they are from an exit.

I guess I will now have to look at the MAP view to see if the POI is close to the exit before I select it.

If anyone has a more definitive info, please let me know.
