Worn/Damaged USB Plug in Garmin Nuvi 200

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200 that suddenly started acting up.
Initially, it said that something I attached was not an appropriate accessory.. That didn't sound good since it was plugged in to the car power plug

Then, it stopped charging through the adapter. I fiddled with it a bit but no luck. So, off to the local electronics store to get a replacement (replaced it with a Garmin brand charger about 10-mos ago.

That one also did not work..

Now, if I hold the USB plug (computer wire) up with something to create pressure (its plugged into a USB charger in here), it charges.

It is hot in AZ so it could have melted over time (weakened).

Questions:

1. Anyone ever see this issue and repaired such a thing?

2. Anyone know how to get the favorites out of a Nuvi 2xx?

I purchased a Nuvi 265T but all my favorites are stored in the Nuvi 200. At least I think I'll have a battery charge so I can write them down shortly.

I read up on how to crack the case so I'll attempt to see what's going on. Garmin wants $59 fix fee to make any repairs. It would be good for the second vehicle and family members to use if I can fix it.

Thanks

There is another discussion

There is another discussion going on about the USB connector and issues with it. From that discussion the connector mounts directly to the circuit board and is not a standard type but custom. That person was looking for used units to salvage parts - including connectors - to repair units.

USB connector

Thanks.. I had search and searched but for USB power etc. not USB connector sad.... I think mine is broken off in side after reading that post. It will be a day or so before I can look at it. Hopefully, with others needing it too, we'll find the right connector. What a waste; all for a broken connector.

get the favorites out

You can upload your favorites to Mapsource if you are able to connect via USB to your computer (by applying pressure?)

Jan ~ Nuvi 255W

You don't need MapSource...

Just copy current.gpx from the x:\Garmin folder on the old unit to a different location on your PC to backup your favorites. To restore them to the new/other unit, copy your backup of current.gpx to the new/other unit but rename it to temp.gpx. The favorites will be read in at the next power-cycle.

Have you checked a site like

Have you checked a site like mouser.com or digi-key.com for the connector? They sometimes sell those rare treasures. Otherwise you can try to cut a usb cable up and connect it directly to the GPS circuit board if you're handy with the soldering iron wink
