iphone 3.1 pairing with nuvi 765

I tried to pair iphone 3.1 with Nuvi 765. It pairs without much problem. It transferes phone book etc. but when you make a phone call from Nuvi or receive a phone call while paired with nuvi you get audio on iphone and not on Nuvi speakers.

Contacted Garmin support

Contacted Garmin support regarding this issue. After 4-5 emails, finally they declared that Iphone 3.x is not compatible with Garmin bluetooth.

.

That should probably more likely read that Garmin's 765 Bluetooth implementation is not compatible with the majority of Bluetooth phones on the market (in one way or another). I know that my MotoRAZR (Verizon) works 100% great with my 760. Use the same phone with the 765 and I get no phonebook transfer or voice dial...

Looks like problem is only with 7x5 models. Iphone 3G is one of the most popular phone. I don't understand why Garmin is not fixing the issue.

Don't feel bad...

THe 265WT pairs great with the Palm Pre, not so with the 765T! Interestingly, the 765T pairs great with the Samsung Instinct!

I just got my 765T yesterday

I just got my 765T yesterday and have not tried the iPhone 3.1 yet (I have a Parrot system in my car). One thought....when you make a call, look at the iPhone screen. You should see the Nuvi listed as an audio source....try pressing it to see if it manually transfer the audio.

Garmin BT SW versions

I have posts elsewhere on this board regarding BT SW versions. Look them up. End result is to try a former BT SW version, it worked for me.

older Bluetooth versions...

These older downgradable Bluetooth versions only work on the 3xx/6xx/7x0 Bluetooth enabled units. These units also have far better compatibility with phones, both old and new because they use the Parrot CK5000 Bluetooth chipset. Garmin moved to the Texas Instuments BRF6350 Bluetooth chipset in the 765 and newer units which has dismal performance and compatibility issues. The TI chipset also does not have it's own Bluetooth firmware as such as the Bluetooth firmware is embedded in the DSP module.

To put it simply, the TI Bluetooth firmware is not downgradable as the Parrot firmware was with a separate Bluetooth update as it's now combined with the entire DSP (digital signal processor) module.

Works fine on 885T

My bluetooth works just fine with my iPhone and my Nuvi885T.
I have been impressed with it from day one.
It rolled over all of my phonebook entries to the Nuvi with no problem

Did you try to pair your 765 with iphone 3.1? I am just curious.

Nuvi and iPhone

In better understanding your question, I use a patch cord between my stereo unit's auxiliary jack and the aux. output on the Nuvi.
Everything plays through the stereo speakers in my vehicle and the quality of sound is great.
It also allows me to use the Nuvi as my primary source of music and mutes the music when the phone rings.
If your vehicle has an aux. jack, I believe this would serve you better than having it played through the Nuvi speakers.
And yes, it works fine with my iPhone.
I have a Nuvi 885T

My car's stereo system does not have aux jack. So I can use FM transmitter or NUVI speakers. I most of the times use NUVI FM transmitter though.
Iphone 3G with software 3.1 does not work with NUVI 765T. The problem is that I get audio only on iphone after pairing it. I am not the only one, I have checked on internet whoever has Iphone 3g with 3.1 firware and NUVI 765, they have same issue like me.

Works with both my 765t's

I've got an original iPhone (first gen) running 3.1, my wife has a 3g & they both pair & work as well, or poorly, as they always have with either of our 765t's. The sound quality is horrible, as always, but it's no worse with 3.1 than it was before.

You have to change the device name to
something without strange characters
try garmin
delete the current pairing and setup again
then you will have the audio working again!

iPhone

My 3.1.2 iPhone works with My Nuvi660. In fact, it work much better than my last cell phone.

Works Fine

My updated 3GS works fine with my 765T

drpetje,Thanks

drpetje,

Thanks for your suggestion. I changed the name of my nuvi to garmin (no special characters) and paired it with my iphone 3g 3.1. It started working. Now I am getting phone audio on my nuvi 765t.

Once again thanks.

Too bad Garmin support is not aware of it.

Iphone pairing with nuvi 765

I too had a problem pairing my nuvi 765t with my new iphone 3GS until I changed the "friendly name" of the nuvi. The old name of my device was NÜVI. I changed the name to nuvi (no umlaut over the "u") and the iPhone and nuvi paired just fine. Phonebook transfered as well.

Yes, after changing Nuvi

Yes, after changing Nuvi friendly name without any special characters, it pairs with iphone. But I have noticed, I am not getting call display. DO you guys get call disply on Nuvi?

--
Iphone XR, Drivesmart 61,Nuvicam, Nuvi3597

Name update works

Updating Nuvi's name works. Problem is due to the special "U" character in nuvi.

nuvi's ü corrected in v3.90 firmware

Just a note...firmware v3.90 for the nuvi 7x5 series now has a standard u in the default Friendly Device name instead of the umlaut ü. Previous versions had the special umlaut ü in the default Friendly Device name which was the cause for many problems, especially with the iPhone.

iPhone music via Bluetooth to Nuvi 765T

Hello all,

Has anyone tried to setup their 7X5 series so that you can play the iPod through the Nuvi? I have the aux cable plugged into my Nuvi and connected to the Aux input of my factory radio, I want to play my iPod music from the iPhone to the Garmin then out to my stereo., I have tried setup in the Nuvi and it's not working with phone pairing, and Audio pairing does not even work. I also tried using a splitter (five in fact) to split the input jack into two but with both the iPhone and the Nuvi connected, there is toons of feedback or very low output from both devices due to something with the impedance with both connected.

Any thoughts or sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Erich

headphone, not line-in

The mini stereo jack on the nuvi is a headphone / line-out jack for output only. It does not have a line-in capability.

I know, that's why I want to

I know, that's why I want to output the music from my iPhone to the nuvi via Bluetooth, then take the audio out of the Nuvi through the line out jack into my car's Aux input. Sorry if my original message was confusing...

The Nuvi bluetooth

The Bluetooth profile in the nuvi doesn't support that profile in all probability. The chip would probably support it, but the software doesn't - and it's probably only mono at best.

Nuvi Bluetooth

The docs for the 765T and the website list the bluetooth as A2DP so it should work. I know my Jabra headset will play music through the iPod. I would think the Garmin should too. I found a youtube video showing the setup working on a Ford in-dash stereo. This shouldn't be so hard. I wonder if I should contact Garmin?

learned something new

Well, I learned something new about the Nuvi Bluetooth. Call them and see. I would be interested in knowing if the software for the BT will support it.

Bluetooth on 765T

I have a Motorola Z3 RIZR phone that connected automatically with a Nuvi 760 after the first pairing. After I got a 765T, the same phone would no longer automatically connect. In fact, 3 out of 4 times, it will fail to connect and then connect on the next attempt. Once connected, it works fine.
Garmin switched from a Parrot chipset on the 760 to a Texas Instruments chipset on the 765T. It has been noted that the Parrot chip worked much better so I was wondering why Garmin would switch other than to save money on a cheaper component. Looking at the T.I. specs, I see that it has a built in FM receiver. I am not sure if it also has an FM transmitter. It now makes sense to use that chipset if the additional FM features of Traffic and FM audio are supported with that chipset. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth portion of the T.I. chip seems to be inferior to that of the Parrot.
