Coordinates

When creating the coordinates for a site, where do I find them or how to read them?

Various methods

You can use www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder website,

Google Earth,

MSN Streets & trips

Plug in the address and you can get coordinates.

Or you can use Google Earth and find the coordinates by visually locating location and getting coordinates

Using a Garmin the coordinates must be in

longitude, latitude (decimal-degree) format

example -80.166666, 30.123456 for a certain location in FL

Doesn't it make a difference to what you have Garmin coordinates set to?
When I put mine in mapsource and google earth I use:
exp: N43 46.614 E11 14.583
Lat/Lon hddd mm.mmm

Is the same as longitude, latitude (decimal-degree.

I do not know what they stand for I just make sure my Garmin is set for the same as my mapsource or whatever I am using to get my POIs and waypoints.

.

No.

N43 46.614 E11 14.583 is Degrees and Decimal Minutes
DDD° MM.MMM'

Coordinates can be expressed in several different formats. They are most commonly Degrees Minutes Seconds (DDD MM SS), Decimal Degrees (DDD.DDDD), or Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDD MM.MMM). The last format is the most common in current GPS models. The second one (Decimal Degrees) is the one we use in Custom POI files.

Degrees, Minutes and Seconds
DDD° MM' SS.S"
N 32° 18' 23.1" W 122° 36' 52.5"

Decimal Degrees
DDD.DDDDD°
N 32.30642° W 122.61458°

Degrees and Decimal Minutes
DDD° MM.MMM'
N 32° 18.385' W 122° 36.875'

.
Also, in Custom POI files, the the latitude and longitude are swapped from the "normal" order.

If I were to guess

If I were to guess at the coordinates you gave me, I would surmise they were in degree-minute format and I would convert them from degree-minute to degree-decimal

N43 46.614 E11 14.583

to

43.776900, 11.243050

Not entirely sure where your location is but normal format
is longitude, latitude when you create a file.

Edit: As usual - MM types faster and more accurate than me !!!! wink

Thank you, this does help but how do I know what one is the Latitude and what one is the Longitude?
My GPS has made me work with information I have never know about before!!

I'm in Texas. Just working with something I know nothing about. I just try to look at the preferences and make sure my GPS and Mapsource, and Google Earth all look the same.

Under the cooridnates there is an optin in Mapsource and I just keep it to what it is set. It has: Datum VGS84. Do not know what this is all about either.

Latitude and Longitude

My GPS has made me work with information I have never know about before!!

LATITUDE & LONGITUDE

Latitude (shown as a horizontal line) is the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds of a point north or south of the Equator. Lines of latitude are often referred to as parallels.

Longitude (shown as a vertical line) is the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of a point east or west of the Prime (Greenwich) Meridian. Lines of longitude are often referred to as meridians.

So, when you see the N##.#### or S##.### thats the Latitude (north or south of the equator)

Now, knowing that, the E or W is the Longitude (east or west of the Prime Meridian.

http://wwp.greenwichmeridian.com/line.htm

Garmin units accept the Longitude first then Latitude
Google Earth accepts Latitude first

in mapsource ►edit ►preferences ►position
then select or set the Grid: to Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd°
set the Datum: to WGS 84

Will have to read this several times for it to stick. Just a side problem of getting old!!!
All kidding aside, thanks for your help. It is just what I needed to know. Will make it easier when I am working in Mapsource with my routes and POIs.
Thanks again.
