edited route changed back when downloading from Mapquest to 765t

I just purchased a new Garmin 765t about a week or so ago. We are planning a 1200 mile trip from NC to MN in 2 weeks. I went to both Google Maps, and later Mapquest to get and edit my route. I changed the route that was first calculated for me, because I wanted to avoid Chicago. After changing the route that was made for me, I downloaded it to my Garmin via USB. Problem: When I went in to view the transferred route in my Garmin that I had just made at the websites. I realized that the route had changed back to the original website calculations, completely ignoring the changes that I had made to avoid Chicago. I was able to configure my own route, using my 765t "Custom Routes" option. Did I do something wrong, or is this just the way the mapping websites are set up? Anyone else experience this? Perhaps the mapping sites have an agreement with Garmin that keeps the user from changing the route when downloading from the website to the GPS, because the "Custom Route" feature is built into the 765t. I am inexperienced at getting maps downloaded to my 765t like this, so maybe I did it wrong. I assumed that it was WYSIWYG maping. I googled to see if anyone else had ever commented on this happening to them, but I found nothing.

The GPS unit will recalculate the route using the routing preferences and settings on the unit.

In order to preserve the routing, you must insert enough physical (actual) Waypoints (not merely routing change points) into the route in order to "force" it to go the way you want.

MapQuest doesn't create "Garmin" routes

The route points that MapQuest creates are not recognized by Garmin. I believe the Garmin sees the MapQuest routes as a group of waypoints. So it recalculates it as soon as you import it. What you will need to do is rather than drag the routing lines around, you need to add pushpin waypoints in MapSource that will force it to go to where you want.

Or you could look into using Garmin's MapSource. While it is not as easy to use as MapQuest, it WILL recognize the route points properly when you drag the route lines around to customize your route.

This is exactly my method of handling it:

And it works quite well once you are familiar with Mapsource smile All my trip planning is done with Mapsource as I typically tweak my routes.

...that MapQuest inserts when you drag the route, can be converted to waypoints with a right click on them if I recall correctly, and then the nuvi should recognize them and route you through them, announcing an arrival at each one before proceeding to the next.

Drag Route Lines in Mapsource

How do you "drag" the route lines around in Mapsource? I, too, have just upgraded from a 350 (no routes) to a 765T and have not had occasion to use Mapsource before now. I am having a problem with forcing a route and haven't been able to figure out how to simply "drag" the route lines, like I can do in Microsoft Streets & Trips.

Mapquest fine tuning

That is EXTREMELY helpful (and coolio !)...I didn't realize you could do that.

The actual command is left click on the point and select "Make It a Route Stop" Great tip!! Thanks again for sharing smile

I create the route,

from Pt A to Pt B. I then drag the blue line to tweak it per my preference. It generates a small dot or via point on the map.

MapQuest help for Garmin users...

Might try looking here:

I'm using a couple different TomToms now, but this worked nicely on my last Garmin.

Cannot Drag the Route Line

uber360 - I cannot "drag" the line. That's what I'm trying to figure out. The lines in the Mapsource version (current version) I'm using are magenta - not blue. I've tried using the hand, the arrow and the route tool, but cannot pick up and "drag" the line. I do it with Microsoft Streets & Trips all the time, but cannot do it with Mapsource.

.

In MapSource (as opposed to MapQUEST that the OP is discussing), in order to move a route, you need to single click on the route with the POINTER (Selection) Tool. Then single click again to "rubber band" the route. Move it to where you want, and then single click again.

Motorcycle Momma, you are good.

Great! Your answer was short, and to the point. I got Mapsource with my free map update. Was told there would not be any new updates between now and when my free update expires. Mapsource is almost as easy to use as Mapquest. I been planning a trip to MN from NC in 2 weeks. Like you said, I had to insert 14 waypoints (flags) in order to keep the route on track, and orient me, the route I wanted to go. The prolific use of waypoints keeps my Garmin from 'recalculating' the route when it is sent from Mapsourxe to my 765t. Great! I am learning my 765t pretty well. Tis tops over my c340. Tho, for what it is, my c340 had been a good unit. Thanks!

Drag a route

spullis,

Unless your Internet connection is very fast the drag and drop will not work. I have experienced that where we are at this moment. I have switched to using GPSBABEL to convert the Streets & Trips routes I create to *.gpx files and it works great. You don't even have to have an Internet connection this way.
