not clear on free updates

So i'm still running Garmin's 2009 maps on my Nuvi 760.

I'm pondering buying the 2010 maps, but here's a question, one whose answer is not clear from Garmin's website.

Is the 2010 download map from garmin's website 2010.2 (the latest update apparently)?

is 2010.1 the initial release? or is it 2010.0?

If i buy the dvd of the CNNA 2010 maps at amazon/bestbuy/wherever - do I get free updates? how many? (Im assuming i'll get all the updates for 2010, aka any thing released prior to the release of the 2011 edition- just need to be sure)

.

1. Yes

2. The releases this year have been ...
2009.1 - released January 2009
2010.1 - released April 2009
2010.2 - released July 2009

3. No. The "free" updates are for GPS units (nuvis and zumos) that are purchased with an older version of the maps when a newer version is available. There is only one free update per unit and it must be downloaded within 60 days of the date that the unit first acquires a satellite lock.

3a. If you have a nuvi, be sure that you purchase the update version and not the full version of CNNA.

3b. If you purchase the Lifetime Map Updates, you can get map updates up to 4 times per year for the life of the GPS unit. Note that it's not transferable to another GPS unit (except in a very limited set of circumstances).

great:-)

good to know....
now...if i can figure out....if Amazon's dvds are 2010.1 or 2010.2....

Ok next question...

Next question....

Garmin nüMaps 2010 North America One-Time Map Update for Detailed Maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico (DVD)

is available from Amazon at a good discount. Seen them in the stores....they appear to be a redeemable coupon for a download? well listed as a dvd, so its a dvd with software with a redemtion code built it? to redeem/download the latest version? not real clear..... but it IS $54.99 vs the $99.99 for the full 2010 maps on Garmin's site....

Well, Garmin

Garmin will show the MSRP or Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price on their website for a product to protect their vendors. That is their price, take it or leave it. Amazon - or another vendor - can sell the product for any price they want including higher or lower knowing Garmin lists the product at a specific price and won't discount it for current product.

Mud any clearer?

Got that....no problem....having worked in sales for a manufacturer, i get MSRP vs retail, and not pissing off retail customers by undercutting them...

Question was about exactlt what the product is....
Do i understand it right, that the product i mentioned is some sort of redemtion thing for the latest version?

Are you confusing One time with lifetime

The one time updates are just that. A one time shot at updating the maps on your unit - like the free update except you pay for this one without an expiration. One bite at the apple and if you opt for the DVD, my understanding is that it is whatever version is on the DVD which may not be current (2010.1 vice 2010.2).

I would opt for the DVD if I didn't have access to a fast broadband line.

Looks to me

Looks to me like you purchase the DVD or SD card and that's it. There doesn't seem to be any mention of a redemption code/coupon etc. So basically you are purchasing one full City Navigator NA 2010.1 update DVD with the unlock code needed for it to work on your GPS. I say 2010.1 version because the Amazon page also notes that the product has been available since May 2009 which is before the 2010.2 maps were released for sale.

If you mean the 2010 update that Amazon is selling it should be the same as 2010.2. It was released in April at the same time the Lifetime Update was released. It may not say 2010.2, though.

Amazon doesn't provide a DVD for the Lifetime update, it sends you a PIN card. The DVD is only for a one time annual update.

ok hmmm

well.....looking at the garmin page again, and amazon's page........

I think i get it...this prodict i referenced is a 1 time update, like one of you said, and whatever;'s on the dvd is whats on the dvd, maybe 10.1 mabe 10.2 if im lucky....

Garmin mentions on their page for this product....that they reccomend the download version to be sure you're getting the latest.....that tells me,....they must sell the 10.1 dvds till they're gone then start shipping the 10.2....and they dont know/dont care to tell you if they've run out of 10.1 dvds....

So, Im thinking my best option would be to splurge, spend the $69.99 full msrp....and get the download from garmin....... I may call them first to be sure i'm getting the latest release...(apaprently 10.2)

Best Option?

I read the thread twice, but maybe I missed it. Is there a reason why you need the DVD vs. the download? If not, I would think spending $25 more on amazon and getting the lifetime updates would be a better option than this one time update.

Even if you only ever did two updates, it would be less expensive than buying two one time updates.

i would rather take the DL vs the DVD,the DL will have the MOST up to date info, once the DVD is burnt if there's any new info the ones in the store will be date.

Caution with SD Card - limited usability

I must caution you that you will not be able to download the maps to your computer with MapSource with the SD version, as the maps are only viewable on the device.

IMHO - If you plan on having your device for at least two years - get the nuMaps lifetime.

I agree but...

My question was directed to skunkape who is making a lot of effort to make sure he has the most recent DVD, even willing to pay more on Garmin vs. Amazon. And he would have the most recent maps with either download (one-time or lifetime). So, with all this effort I was curious if skunkape had a reason for needing the DVD. I could not find a reason in his previous posts.

And, if there is no reason for wanting the DVD instead of the download, then recommend the download. And, if you are going to download anyway, spend a few more dollars and get the lifetime updates rather than a one time update.

Map update procedure

I think I saw a thread on this somewhere but cannot locate it.

I tried to download the free 2010.20 update for my 765T (update period expires Sept 12, probably just before the next update becomes available). I am running 64bit Vista on one of my machines. I went to the Garmin download site using FireFox. When I get to the step where the pop-up appears for the Download Manager, FireFox unceremoniously crashes. It cannot recover unless I tell it to close that 'tab.' This was reproducible (twice).

I then cranked up Internet Explorer 8. Failed. It tried to install the ActiveX control, then it hung. I killed the window and tried again. Same deal.

I then fired up Internet Explorer 8 32bit (rather than the default 64bit). This worked, and I am now about 10% complete after about 10-11 minutes (unfortunately, my download rate is peaking at about 2.7 Mbs).

So for folks having trouble with the download on a 64bit Vista machine using FireFox or IE8, try the 32bit version of IE8.

Hope that this helps. If there is another solution, will somebody please correct me on this. But this was the path that I took to get the download working.

I do hope that Garmin does not introduce 2010.30 before 9/12!!! I'll probably be buying the Lifetime Maps at Amazon anyway, but now I can wait a bit longer! The price keeps fluctuating +/- a few dollars all the time. I need to hit it at a low point!!!

Sorry to hear about the download woes. I'm glad you've found a fix. Remember that with Vista, if the Launch of the downloaded program (after completing the download) seems to not work (or be taking FOREVER), you can seriously speed things up by disabling Vista's UAC before starting the installation.

Regarding dates and Amazon: I doubt that 2010.3 will be out before 9/12. My guess is that the release date with be closer to the end of October. Amazon: yes indeedy, with popular items and if you're patient--it's always worth monitoring the price over a couple of weeks. Amazon's pricing of popular items does fluctuate and knowing where the dips & peaks are can save you a bit of cash.

No real reason, other than its $15 cheaper. My internet connection does get a bit flakey sometimes...but...i nomrally only have problems when I'm downloading ...well...large files...from...well....questionable sources...

I AM seriously considering the lifetime option...just havent made up my mind yet...

so, while i'm thinking of it, what is Garmin's general definition of the "lifetime of a unit"?

Honestly I suspect Vista x64 as the culpurate here. I haven't had THIS problem, but i've had many strange things happen on my 64 bit vista computer that are equally inexplicable.

One thing i do suggest is, try using an account WITHOUT admin privileges. That seems to have solved pretty much all my strange behavior problems
