How does the custom poi work on the gps

I have a Garmin 755t and have never loaded POI yet. Here are my questions if anybody can answer, when poi are loaded into the gps, do they show up on the map all the time? Or do you go in to the Custom POI on the gps and select the one you want (example Rest Areas)? Can you just load all of your custom POI on a memory Card and just insert it into the GPS when you want the poi's.? Thanks for any input.

I keep all of mine on the removable card. They don't show up on the map all the time. No POI files do unless you zoom in very close. You access them by Go To, Extras, Custom POI and then select the database you want. If you load an alert file with them at the same time you load the POI file (MUST have the same name with only the extension different) then you can set alerts that work all the time - I do that for Rest Areas.
