265t Garmin - new to POIs.

Hi People,

I've been reading the FAQ and get started guides but would be appreciate it if someone can confirm my understanding of POIs and some general questions.

I am all set on the POI loader and connection to my GPS to the point having even got some extra POI on. They all show up in a Custom_POI entry on my Extras slot.

Questions:
Proximity alerts
I finally figured out the icon bmp which someone wrote about here but my question is I believe the 265T has no MP3 ability so I cannot have proximity alerts?

Blue line
I'm getting that blue line that shows all roads taken but I found the posting about clearing out your trip logs and it is still there. Am I missing something?

Map Updates
I know from reading this site as of today that the most likely a new map will appear in Aug. So I'm waiting to use my 1 free update as I will register soon as it comes out but hopefully in the 60 days since I've come online. Is there a link or guide on how this upgrade proceeds? Its it a file? Does it come through web updates?

Thanks for any help and thanks to this site.

You can use wav files for

You can use wav files for your proximity alerts.Mp3 will not work on 265.
You can hide trip log.Go to tools ,settings, map and under trip log set to hide.

This is how to do the wav files for your alerts.

a.Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b. Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c. After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d. The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e. You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono. Wav files are also on site for download.
Select manual mode on poiloader to set speed or distance for alert.

Your map updates don't come through webupdater they can be found on your Garmin Page https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces

One more clarification

The 60 day period to receive a map update doesn't start with the registration date, it starts with the day the unit first received satellite lock. As you have already used the unit and it has acquired satellite lock, go ahead and register the unit. You will then be notified when you log into MyGarmin by what date you have to download the free update.

Custom Audio Files Not Necessary for Proximity Alerts

You need not use any custom audio file to have a proximity alert. The built-in default bongs work just fine.

Thanks all...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I originally gave up on the proximity alert but I actually loaded the POI manually so I finally saw the option.

I will definitely register now since I already used my 265t so this way I will know about any map updates.

And I wondered why wav files were present when I downloaded the POI so I did get that sox program file so I have to see this all in action. This will be interesting to see.

I've been reading and I'm sure I'll have more questions but its great that you all have been so helpful.

Right now, I've gotten the icon, the poi file and just got the wav file loading down from all the help.

Extra vehicles and voices:
Now if I can just figure out how to put the extra vehicles and voices on the memory card rather than the memory of the garmin. I have been trying to avoid loading anything else other than web updates to the internal memory. Saved the files to my hard drive by getting them at the garmin site but have to read some faqs.

Thanks again all.

You can't put the vehicles and voices on the memory card. They won't work. Have to be in the proper folders on the unit itself.

If you haven't done so already you can create some extra disk space by deleting unneeded voice and help files from the unit.

use caution

Gadgetguy is right but be really careful and DO NOT DELETE you map files, They are in the Garimin folder and has .img extension. If you do. So long Nuvi back to the factory.

Will work on vehicles and extra voices - but careful on deletes.

Thanks.

I was going to research how to get the voices and vehicles onto the card but the answers saved me the search. I'll just have to selectively pick what I want to save space.

On space, the 265T has about 580 MB free but all vehicles take like 180 MB which I will not do. Card space I don't care about however space on the 265t I want to save.

I'm really nervous about deleting files as I've read I can delete foreign language file help to save space. But I have not run out of space as yet so I'll hold off deleting anything. But I'll remember the .img extension for sure.

I will just be conservative on putting things on the garmin for now.

Gotta see how the proximity stuff works as I haven't been on the road a lot. Ironically commute by bicycle. Hah!

Thanks,
