iClean Screen Cleaner=No Fingerprints

Ever since Garmin switched screens to the new black ones, they seem to be fingerprint magnets. I didn't seem to have this problem with the 350/650 Nuvis.

I tried iClean by Monster and it works very well to keep the screen clear of fingerprints. I also use it on my laptop, lcd screen and lcd tv. The spray leaves a slick surface to the screens and keeps them cleaner longer.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

This is sold at a lot of stores. I'm only listing the link to show the bottle.

sounds interesting. I will look for it. Sounds like an oil of some kind. How long does it last between applications?

Use Google

Just use Google and search for: "iClean Screen Cleaner"

You will find a number of places you can get it.

I bought it from buy.com ($14.95 with free shipping) which seemed to be about the best total delivered price for the product.

It will be here within a week and I will start using it then. I didn't see need to rush it getting here.

Radio Shack and Best Buy carry it but they usually sell the small travel bottle. I bought the double 45mL bottle + cloth for only a few dollars more. $14-$15 dollars seems to be the running price.

It's not so much an oil substance. If you've used Rain-X before, it works like that. Leaves a slick surface. Just remember to spray your rag and not the screen directly so liquid does not run under the panel.

I've been using it for about a year on several screens and I like it. Works well on computer screens since so many people have to physically touch a screen to point at something and then you see an ugly smudge...yuck.

Racer X, do you have to re-apply this often? Any residue on your fingers when touching the screen?

This stuff is great! I use it on my touch screen phone as well. Thanks for posting!

I can't say how often to reapply. I've only applied it to the gps once and seems to still work fine after two months. Of course, if you use your GPS daily, you'll have to apply it more often. I only use mine about 3 times a week. You still get slight prints at times but they wipe off very easily and won't come back for days, at least for me. It cleans the screens without streaks. I don't know if multiple applications will make it work better by building layers. I think it's more just a cleaner with a slick substance mixed in.

Mind you, this will not magically keep all prints off. I just make gunk less likely to stick and makes cleaning much easier.

On my Nuvi, I used to have to get a damp wipe to get rid of smudges. Now, a dry shirt does it.

A little goes a long ways. Unless you are going to use this on many displays like tvs or computers, maybe save your money and get a smaller bottle to try. One squirt is all it takes for the gps, and I only need three squirts for the 32" LCD tv.

Oh, and no residue on my fingers. Just spray on a microfiber cloth, then wipe on to the screen, then buff it until it's dry. That's it. Once it's dry, there won't be anything to stick to your fingers.

I appreciate the response. I picked some of this (small bottle) up when I was out today at Radio Shack. It says that there are approximately 400 sprays in it. The next time my touchscreen needs cleaning, I will try it.

Thanks for the tip on iClean...I also have a fingerprint magnet 765T screen and iClean has pretty much resolved it. I don't know how long each application will last but iClean is totally worth the somewhat steep $15 price tag ($25 for the large bottle).

I have been using a product for many, many years called Klear Screen that works great but does have the type of fingerprint repelling ability that iClean does. If you've ever been to a Fry's Electronics (there are many here in SoCal, one just 5 minutes away from me in City of Industry) , you've seen Klear Screen. If you look for iClean at Fry's, you'll find it in the laptop accessories area.

I'll still use both cleaners (I have a ton of Klear Screen) but for fingerprint prone screens like the 765T, I'll stick with iClean.

Thanks again for the tip grin

Thanks for the link to the cleaners. I am currently using one of those microfiber clothes that you clean eyeglasses with. Works pretty good, but I'll probably pick up a bottle of cleaner as well since it lasts longer.

Screen Protector

DefMan wrote:

Does that even work on a Nuvi, being that they are touch-sensitive? I would have thought a screen protector would impede one from being able to input anything on a touch-screen device. Can anyone who has tried this give a comment on how well it worked -- or didn't work?

I came on here the other day

I came on here the other day and was going to ask about fingerprints and I saw this post. I went out and purchased some. It was a little bit more expensive than I would have liked, but I can use it on my laptop and my phone as well so I picked it up. It works GREAT! Thanks for the tip about it.

Screen protectors are

Screen protectors are commonly used on touch screen mobile devices. They do desensitize the screen a bit, but they provide protection from scratches etc..

I'm not sure that I would use on on a Nuvi though as I am not very worried about scratches on it. When it comes out of the vehicle, it goes right into a carrying case and unlike many mobile devices it has a good lip around the screen that keeps it from being flush on the surface.

Devices that are flat to the surface are much easier to scratch.

Finger prints are more the issue there and I think, though I have not yet received the product (iClean) being mentioned here that it might work better for that purpose.

Great Tip on the spray

I plan to purchase TWO bottles and spray the pointing fingers on my teenage daughter who always like to point things out on my laptop screen with her two fingers.
Great tip, just kidding about spraying the fingers, I think I will cut them off instead.

Sorry for the tangent, but

Sorry for the tangent, but has anyone noted that the 200-class displays are less sensitive/muddier? I have a 350 and 200W. The 350 looks crisper, and I barely have to touch it and the press is recognized. For the 200 I have to push pretty hard to get it to register, and it's a muddier display.

Thanks krelvinaz

Thanks krelvinaz, that helps me understand it better. I think I'm not going to worry about a screen protector at this time. Might have a look at that iClean product some time though.

I just use the microfiber

I just use the microfiber cloth that came with my Rayban Sunglasses.

I read the user manual for my LCD Viewsonic monitor and it says never spray any cleaners directly onto the screen. I wonder if this same concept applies to the Garmin units. i would be afraid that some of the cleaner fluid getting in there and shorting something out. or even if you first spray it on the rag first im just worried some of the liquid cleaner will get in there somehow.

i will just wipe the screeen with a dry microfiber cloth with no cleaner. has done great so far.

DriveSmart 50, DriveSmart 60, nuvi 2595, nuvi 3760,

The iClean is almost a

The iClean is almost a "gel", so it doesn't run down the screen and get in cracks as easily, atleast on the larger electronics like laptops, I would highly recommend the iClean product as I use it on all of my gadgets with screens including my laptop which it works amazing on. Just as a side note, I also have a Zagg Invisible shield on my Garmin Nuvi 265wt and would also recommended this product to protect the screen. They are a little tough to install (perfectly, that is) yourself, so if you want it to look 100% perfect I would take it into any Best Buy store and have one of them do it for you, they charge $8 for Invisible Shield installations; just make sure that the person that does your has some experience installing them smile

Screen Protector vs. iClean

Got to say that I was leaning toward a screen protector. Thanks for the rundown. I'll try this first, and use the protector if all else fails.

Great product

Thanks Racer X for the tip, I got myself a bottle and it really does a good job.

Thanks for the tip

The Garmin was getting rather nasty looking. I'll give this a try.

Does It leave a glare???

Just got the 785t and cant stand the screen. It is definitely a fingerprint magnet, and has significantly more glare than my 660 (and lousy sensitivity/response). Would love to lose the fingerprints, but dont need more glare either....

glare?

Does this product make glare better or worse?

Glare...

The glare of the screen itself remains about the same however, it diminishes the contrast ratio between the fingerprints and the screen making them much less visible. It also makes the fingerprints much easier to remove with any standard microfiber cloth (no spray needed). It's not a miracle product though...it definitely helps but you'll still get fingerprints on the screen eventually regardless.

Screen Cleaner

I will get some iclean this weekend I guess u get what u pay for.

Much Cheaper Solution

Get some scotch tape. Put strips across the screen until the whole screen is covered in scotch tape. Wait about a minute. Then grab the tail strips of the scotch tape and slowly pull up. Whola Perfectly Clean screen, no finger prints. Works every time. Works better then anything I have tried. Plus no fear of getting liquid in the unit. Plus it ensures no scratches will be caused by a cloth running across the screen picking up dirt and spreading it across the screen. The tape forces the dirt to pull up not go across. Which greatly reduces the chances of the screen scratching. The pull up force of the tape will not hurt the unit. Try it you will be amazed. No need for cleaning solutions. You may need to tape twice depending on how dirty the screen is.

iPhone

I think I'll try this stuff on my iPhone.

Alcohol

The Garmin user's manual says to use a lint-free cloth and water, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or eyeglass cleaner to clean a dirty touchscreen. And Garmin says, as has practically everyone in this thread, to put the liquid on the cloth, not the screen.
