Does your Nuvi restart by itself in the middle of routing?

Got my 885T two days ago, updated to new firmware and everything. Rebooted itself in the middle of routing yesterday.

Prior to the 885T I had a 765T which had all sorts of problems including rebooting by itself.

Anybody else have restarting issues?

Sounds like a problem

That has never happened on my unit but I suggest you do a hard reset and see if that fixes the problem.

Just remember to back up your favorites before doing the reset.

Good luck

The 765T when first out did

The 765T when first out did have that reset issue. Since the firmware/software updates my 765T is rock solid.
The advice to do a hard reset is right on especially if software or firmware has been updated. If you have an SD card installed, take that out also to make sure it isn't causing problems.

Micro SD Card

I had an issue with maps dissapearing. I am pretty sure that the reason is as follows. The map is on a micro SD card which is in a micro SD -> to SD adapter. I believe that accumulated heat in the car (especially in the windshield) caused expansion of the micro SD -> SD card and the GPS can no longer access the map.

I am not 100% sure that heat is the problem, but I am in the process of replacing the adapter with a true SD card. I have also tried putting a thin piece of cardboard in the adapter slot to force better contact.

I joist thought it may be useful to share with the group.

Nuvi 660

My 660 has never rebooted, I am grateful I chose this model even as the 7xx series models were on the market.

I have had zero problems with this unit, running the latest firmware update (12/08) and the second to last bluetooth firmware update. I do however have the latest TTS voices loaded, and tweaked for volume and the "how did we get here?" phrase replacing 'recalculating'! grin

I have a 885T and it never has rebooted on me

I have the 885T and have used it for almost two months and about 3,000 miles and it never has rebooted.

I had it happen on my 760 a number of times about a year ago but that was fixed with a firmware update.

255W and 660

I had the 660 and now I have the 255W. I have never experienced that problem. The Garmin website mentioned that issue with the 8x5 and 7x5. You should check the Garmin website for the fix.

Reboot Issue...

Mine used to, but it was fixed by a firmware update several months ago. Its been working fine ever since.

Perhpas you should call or email Garmin Tech Support.

Good Luck!!

the more dohickeys they add, the more things that can go bad.

I am happy as long as my 660 gets me from A to B and atleast half way back. Never had it NOT get me all the way back.

885t Rebooting

I am so sorry that I bought the Garmin 885t, it hasnothing but trouble, but evil thank god that I have a garmin 670 that works like a charm
PS I have the latest Garmin 885t 470 firmware, it helps but it far from perfert

--
Never trow your old GPS out, because sometimes they work better than the new ones, take my 670 it work much better than my 885t, but my 885t has more features on it, so that is why I use it

Rebooting

I also have a Nuvi 885T. Noticed that it reboots
when i reach a proximity alert only, which is on my
micro sd card. It probably has something to do with
sd card and temperature which has been pretty hot lately here in new york. I guess its like your pc , when your components over heat- it reboots?.

Question for User: RJRSW

Do you have any proximity alerts-lets say a red camera alert on your SD card?.

that's strange

Nope that has not happened to my garmin before.

never used a sd card because the 885t has 4GB of memory

joegambino wrote:

I never used a SD card because the 885t has 4GB of internal memory and had over 2GB free. The custom POI file even with many files loaded is really small so no need to use an SD card.

I always had red light and speed camera files in the unit.

My son now has the 885T and it is working great for him and likes it a lot more than his old 760.

Going to try something else by installing the poi files on the internal memory and see if that solves the rebooting issue. grin

Yes,

It happen to me multiple times. I don't know why?

Val - Nuvi 785t and Streetpilot C340

My 1490T

does it usually once or twice a week.
Generally it is when I am currently on a route, and then make a change to the route.
The 'land' turns to 'water' for a few seconds and then the whole thing reboots.

Also...

occasionally I get a recalculating in the middle of an expressway. Weird.

Keep track of what POI was the one that triggers the reboot

Keep track of what POI was the one that triggers the reboot and try eliminating the POI file that caused it when you load them and see if that solves the problem. Could be something in that one POI that triggers the reboot.

Does your Nuvi restart by itself in the middle of routing?

I have 765T I never and ever had any problem restart by itself in the middle of the road.

1490T does it occationally

My 1490T does this. I have wondered if its also related to traffic because it will do it when it is recalculating due to traffic.

Map error

Panache wrote:

A few times I have got that recalculating on the freeway as the GPSr thought I was on the adjacent road instead and was trying to get me back on the main road. I attributed that to error in the map (as it was always in the same area) or in the positioning as the two roads were parallel and closed to each other, but I never had a clear definitive explanation.

Rebooting Issue

Hello All,

I am trying to get together enough individuals to file a Class Action Lawsuit against Garmin Intl. regarding the issue of their units having the "Recalculating and freezing" problem. I have a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 430N Nav System in it that has been experiencing this issue. After calling Garmin numerous times, and being told that they have no idea of the problem, I was told to take the vehicle to my dealer where the unit would have to be replaced. This is a very expensive procedure! I began researching the issue and have found that this particular problem has been ongoing since back in 2011 and is not limited to the in-dash systems only.

So, since Garmin will not step up and help the consumers by addressing and fixing the problem, I am looking to go the route of litigation to help all those who have had the same issue. I am in the beginning stages so if you are interested please let me know by emailing me your name ONLY to golfguynut@yahoo.com! Once I have enough people on board I will take this to my attorney and at that time you will be asked for your full contact info by him.

Remember, I need ONLY your name. I am not collecting any personal or identifying information myself The attorney will handle all of that. Thank you for your time.

1490 reboot

This happened to my 1490t a couple of times, in the middle of a route, a couple of,years ago. Checking with garmin, was told to update to,latest firmware and do a hard reset. Seemed to do the trick. Somewhat academic for me now since I moved to the 2797 and have not had this problem on this unit.......so far.

765t Reboot

That happened to my last weekend which was disconcerting because I had to wait for it to come back on before I could find my destination.
Weird. I will try the hard reset and see if it straightens it our.

This has happened with every

This has happened with every high-end Garmin product that I have owned.

Like others have stated it does happen during routing so I have to pull over to wait for the re-boot.

I

I agree, it's happened with every Garmin product I've owned and it's happened with the TomTom products as well, but lets face it, it's a piece of electronics don't they all lock up and/reboot once in awhile for no apparent reason. shock

Yep, once in a blue moon my 3790 will re-boot while on a route.

current GPX file duplicate

when doing the hard reset, I wanted to back up my favorites. In doing so, I notice that the current GPX file was in the GPX folder AND in my POI folder. Is this supposed to be in both places. MY GPS is full so if I can delete extraneous files, I would like to do so.

Me too

Yep, once in a blue moon my 3790 will re-boot while on a route.

this exact thing happens to me...sometimes but rarely, my 3760 will reboot in the middle of a route and then everything's fine and it won't do it again for a long long time.

Also, why did we start posting again in a 5 year old thread?

I DON'T REMEMBER

If this has happen to me or not. If it did, it wasn't a big deal to restart.

There

@bsp131

There shouldn't be a current.gpx file in the POI folder. Everything in the POI folder, that's actually going to show up in Custom POIs needs to be a .gpi file.

current.gpx?

I assume you are talking about the 765 and that you have a folder tree which contains
Garmin
        -> GPX
        -> POI

I hear you saying that "current.gpx" was found in BOTH GPX and POI folders.

Now my understanding is that "current.gpx" which is found in the GPX folder is specified in GarminDevice.xml as "OutputFromUnit" and this is written by the device every time the unit boots.

Because of the specification in GarminDevice.xml, a "current.gpx" file found in the POI folder would have to be one that you put there. However, in the POI folder, I would have expected to find only .gpi files.

Indeed, .gpx files anywhere on the unit will be discovered and possibly merged with favorites to be written to the next "current.gpx" file.

I hope you have a backup of your unit. If not, please see
Backing Up Your GPS (Garmin) {G}
before doing any cleanup of your unit.

What I would suggest doing first is opening both of those "current.gpx" files in EPE and seeing what is in them.

Reset

Mine has never reset, either intentionally or not.

GPX folder

to be more clear. When I open the Garmin folder, there is a GPX folder with an archive folder, a Temp GPX folder, and the following files: Current gpx and 3595941237lpt. When I open my POI folder, it contains the GPX folder with the archive folder, the Current gpx file and the 3595941237lpt file. Can the GPX folder in the POI folder be deleted.

Yes

Yes, it is serving no useful purpose there. It is just taking up space and it is a mystery how it ever got there in the first place.
