Does your Nuvi restart by itself in the middle of routing?

Got my 885T two days ago, updated to new firmware and everything. Rebooted itself in the middle of routing yesterday.

Prior to the 885T I had a 765T which had all sorts of problems including rebooting by itself.

Anybody else have restarting issues?

Happened on my 760 a number of times.

Also once on my 3790. But worked normally after.

2595LMT

My 2595LMT did restart once or twice when I first got it. Since f/w upgrades last year, problem disappeared and has been rock solid since.

Many restart / crash periodically

Although I love the Nuvis, none of them are perfect. I've had several different models and they all seem to crash/hang from time to time. Fortunately, it's not often. I don't know why but I guess it's just a bug in the software here and there.

855 re-boots

My 855 re-boots every couple of days. The re-boots appear to be correlated with Speed and RLC POIs and with map version. The 855 will frequently re-boot at the same geographic location and vehicle direction. After the map has been updated, the 855 will usually start to re-boot at a different set of locations (even with the same POI files as before). It might have something to do with displaying the speed/RLC icon or sounding the alert. Garmin has stopped updating the f/w on the 855 a long time ago, so spontaneous re-booting will probably never get fixed on the 855.

Only when hot

I've seen our 660 hang and reboot twice.

Both times the unit was very warm and outside temps were, too!

this is a known problem

And the workaround has to do with the number and types of alerts you are asking the unit to perform concurrently. From my testing the speech engine seems to handle two simultaneous alerts/directions but mix in a third and you are toying with a crash or hang. There are some additional triggers that may have to do with the mapping such as giving an alert and attempting to read a new map segment into the unit memory. I've experienced this hang (actually a freeze) only when using TourGuide files..

Never

Never had that happen with any units from Garmin (so far).

my 3790 much better than my 855

I ran an 855 for a couple of years, and was happier with it than some people posting here. However it would just freeze roughly once every ten operating hours, spontaneously reboot much less often but enough to notice, and just decide to run itself out of power while sitting turned off maybe once every month or two.

My 3790 I prefer on multiple grounds, but it is also superior on every one of these points. Just yesterday I did have a screen freeze for the first time in many months (and I run it every minute I am in a car--at home or on trips). I can't recall a reboot, but there might have been one or two, and I don't think it has every spontaneously run itself out of power.

Most if not all of this is just a matter of software bugs, and how the system responds to them. So, in principle, enough correction of errors could probably make nearly all of these go away on any given model. Not all, because a few cases probably have a hardware component.

Yes

My Garmin 3790 reboots itself about once a week when rerouting following a traffic update. It's really annoying and very disappointing.

765T

My 765T started doing this awhile back. It constantly reboots; will never completely boot up before trying to reboot. I've had this unit for a number of years and have had very few problems with it. I finally gave up on it and retired it to the junk drawer. I still have a 2595LMT and a 1390 that work properly.

My 765T As Well

Yes, my 765T reboots occasionally as well. The diagnostic logs are full crash details and most appear to be memory pointer errors. They are most common when I have traffic alerts and need to be rerouted. The device will crash and restart. I had the same problems with my C550 as well.

This is one reason I see no need to update to a newer Garmin device. My experience with all their devices turns up these kind of bugs that will never be fixed. Garmin has no process that I am aware of to collect the diagnostic logs and analyze them for potential bug fixes. If I went out and bought their latest greatest device, I am sure it too will keep crashing at certain times and those bugs will never be fixed either. While I do not use my iPhone for mapping, as my Sprint data service is useless, at least it is does not crash with the frequency my Garmin does AND if it does, it is usually fixed with an update.

I have experienced similar

I have experienced similar problems that I resolved by formatting the Garmin. There's a procedure out there somewhere/ I displayed all files, copied everything off, formatted it as my last resort, copied everything back and it worked.

Good luck. I think garmin could do a better job with more cpu and error correcting memory....

Mine

All my Garmin (2820, 765, 8xx, 3490....) restart itself countless times when routing or idle. I finally stop that happen by give it to my friend or family and using the smart phone for routing.

I had that a lot when I first was forced to put maps onto an SD card. Factory resets seemed to fix it for a while, but then it came back. However, since the last couple of map updates it hasn't happened so I wonder if there was some instability in the maps.
