2011 Map Update

Anybody know when the 2011 map update comes out ?

<<Page 2>>

Can't answer about the C340, but the c530 can with reservations.

The c340 is listed as compatible. With my c530, I can load a portion of the country into the unit itself, and then the rest can be loaded on a memory card. The Choices are East, West, or different combinations including only the lower 48 states. After loading, I have the options on my PC using the installed program MapLoad (installed by the nuMaps download) to add additional segments of the map. I can do this either through a card reader or through the C530, although this may not be an option on the c340.

Make that mistake only once

I bought the Nuvi Lifetime maps for my Blackberry. Even though I liked the BB, it wasn't for me. So I sold it and bought a Touch Pro. But the lifetime maps don't transfer. Oh well, lesson learned. So I just leave AmazeGPS for the phone, and use the Zumo for my GPS needs.

smile I wonder if we'll soon be able to buy "quality pre-owned" or "factory certified, pre-owned" maps. smile

At least the automakers started calling them 2009 1/2 model! Garmin? Well....

LOL

What difference does the label make as long as the product is there

expandible memory compatibility?

I've read of some competitors models where the map update exceeds the internal memory of the unit and that created problems.

This has affected Garmin as well. The early nuvi 2x0 series came pre-installed with a limited mapset containing only the "lower 48 states" v2008. When the next v2009 update was released, the new "lower 48 states" region was too large to fit on the unit due to it's limited memory of 1GB. Users had the option to try to make room by deleting unused voices, help files, text files, and vehicles. Even then, it just barely fit and remaining space on the nuvi after the new map was installed was approx 10-15 MB.

The following update (v2010) was too large to fit regardless of what was previously deleted to make room. To counter this, Garmin supplied pre-determined regions coded within the map installer which would only load partial regions, like Eastern US and Western US.

But there was a problem (bug) with this as well with the v2010 release; seems the installer was not recognizing the limited memory nuvis correctly and attempted to install the entire US/Canada/Puerto Rico mapset rather than the smaller East or West region. The installer built the mapset, deleted the current map on the unit and then tried to transfer the full, incorrect mapset which of course did NOT fit. With no backup of the original mapset that was previously on the unit and the new mapset too large to fit, the installer aborted and left many users with a map-less unit. I'm assuming the bug has since been corrected, thus the reason for the v2010.10 "C" release in addition to the initial 2010.10 and 2010.10 "B" releases.

So Garmin is indeed running into issues here as well.

This is along the lines of what I thought would happen. Does anyone know if when using the additional memory such as an SD card or microSD card, whether Garmin would write the entire file to both internal memory and the external memory (card) or just one of them? In other words, are there any limitations of using the external memory with the unit for the map updates? I've read of competitors units where the map data had to be entirely on one or the other (internal or the card) and would hope this is avoided by Garmin.

While I was scanning my device my dashboard says I have a map update available and when I checked it it says it is North America NT 2011 map update. I think it is out now. I have 2010.40 on my 255WT device.

2011 Update Available (At least for my Nuvi 680)

Just logged into "My Garmin" account on the Garmin website and a "pop-up" that a map update was available.

I have the lifetime map update service... so it is available... at least for my Nuvi 680 device.

I also check and use the "Webupdater" service and there was an update for some of the "text to speach" files (improved pronounciation of certain streets).

Good luck,

If you want to risk it, there's a chance the new map will be out before July 26. But there's at least as good a chance that it won't.

Personally, I'd update to 2011.10 now and not risk losing a free update. But then, I'd also soon purchase a numaps lifetime for a GPS so gaining or losing one free update isn't that important. One reason to update now with the free update, then later buy the numaps lifetime is that you'll have some time to look and wait for a great price on the lifetime map update (list price about $120 -- street prices range over time from about $60-100).

BTW, what map do you have now?

Free map update timing

I had the same dilemma, having just recieved a Nuvi255W as a gift. I didn't want to use my free update just before a newer release (that I didn't know was coming) might be made available closer to the end of the 60-day window. However, since no schedule is shown on the site about when to expect the next map update, I went ahead and downloaded my update about 30 days into the 60 days. I didn't have any problems with using that free update and getting it to install successfully.

2011-10 Update

Anyone downloading the new 2011-10 update should tread lightly! There are a ton of errors on it for the routing.

I installed it but took it off and went back to the previous version.

I went from Ontario to Langsing Michigan and it routed me off I69 in Flint towards M53 then had me make a U-Turn back to I69 so when I got home I re-checked all my settings and they were set right.

I ran a test with it. I asked it to take me to Florida..hahaha it crossed me over in Port Huron then took me to I75 which is correct then it had me cross back into Canada at the Detroit Bridge, drive for 8 miles then make a U-Turn cross back into Detroit and continue to Florida.

I also found it was having me take side streets in the city.

The previous update was fine so I am sticking to it until I see the next update after 2011-10

ok....2011-10 is not good????

You May

You may want to do a reset on your Nuvi which isn't a bad idea anytime you install any new maps or software. A reset will often solve all kinds of weird problems.

Lifetime update

I recently saw that Amazon is offering the lifetime update for $83 from one vendor.......

Not a problem with my 360

I have lifetime updates on my 360 and have had no problems. Not sure on the size of the harddrive on the 340 but if you remove the unused voices and languages you should have room and then some

Customer reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%C3%BCMaps-Lifetime-Update-Ame...

A short while ago, Amazon offered the update for a steep discount via online map code. A lot of folks bought and tried to install the update, but were prevented from succeeding for a few days before things worked out. I imagine that a lot of the low ratings were due to folks in that short term period that were flummoxed and angry. The situation eventually was resolved and those who bought at the steep discount got quite a good deal in the end.

On the other hand, some folks just complain because they weren't expecting such a long download required for a map update.

Amazon (or Sellers with "Fulfillment by Amazon") remain some of the most consistent suppliers of the map update at a good price. It's where I bought my two copies of numaps Lifetime.

I see four stars for the lifetime updates, based on 240 customer reviews. The lifetime updates are less than $20 more than one-time right now on Amazon.

amazon

I don't have too much touble with amazon directly, but some of their market place companies leave a lot to be desired, almost like buying on Ebay.

Amazon LIfetime Update

Unless it says "sold by Amazom" I usually don't buy becasue as you stated, their re-sellers aren't much better than buying on ebay.

Not that everyone on ebay is bad.... but you really have to be careful.

But if it is sold by or provided by Amazon, they will stand behind it and always offer a 30 day return policy.

I don't ever recall having any problems with Amazon, but I have had had many problems with ebay.

2011.20?

So 2011.10 has been out for a few months. Just curios when the second quarter update (2011.20?) will come. It's really hard to find out the exact version from Garmin's website. Maybe those with lifetime updates can verify the version that they are getting these days.

Thanks.

they are not quarterly

Garmin doesn't promise quarterly updates. They say for the lifetime subscribers "maps will be updated UP TO four times a year." They have managed an update approximately every quarter, but they are under no obligation to do so.

I really like my Garmin with the updates at 4 times a year(approx). I had a Magellan before and they only updated once a year if that, and then all the major Interstate Routes still were not in the maps.

You can put the map in a SD card, which should not impact this at all. There is no requirement that the map must be in the unit.

Just Updated to 2011

I finally took the time to update my Garmin. After all I have Lifetime updates and should be taking advantage of that.

I did have one problem while updating. The Garmin update routine said I needed a Plug in (GAC I think). I was able to update the plug-in but then the computer locked up. Once I rebooted and went back to MyGarmin and repeated the process, the installation said I still needed to update the Plug-in. I selected to update it and then everything went fine. I was worried that I would not be able to update.

Took a few hours to finish.

Update to 2011.10

Has a successful update as a new lifetime update purchaser. It took about 3.5 hours total but the process was very clear. Bought it from Amazon.

It does take some time to install them..

2011.20 should be out shortly and time to do it again!
